Please help remove. Computer is infected with trojan named C:winself:exe. I tried SDFix and it made an attempt at removing file but I need some guidance--because it re-installed itself right after that. Thank you. Hijack log:

Hi Clint,

When posting logs to the forum, always post the complete log including the header - all the information is important.
We may need to use SDFix, but for the time being, please delete the copy of SDFix you have from your Desktop, also delete this folder:

C:\SDFix

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.

Hi Clint,

Before we make any changes to your computer, I want to make sure System Restore is running. Have you disabled this on purpose? Please re-enable it as follows:

Press Start->Run, type services.msc into the box and press OK
Find in the list the service named System Restore Service and double-click it.
Change the Startup type dropdown to Automatic, press the Start button, and once the service has been started press OK to close the dialog box.
Close the Services console.

Right-click My Computer (on the Desktop or Start Menu) and select Properties
Choose the System Restore tab
Make sure Turn off System Restore is UN-checked and press OK
Then click Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like Before fix then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command (it's one long command) into the box and press OK:

cmd /c dir "c:\winself.exe" /a /s >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt" & notepad "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt"

A black box will open and a file will appear on your Desktop called look.txt.
Please wait for look.txt to open in Notepad automatically.
Post the contents of look.txt in your next response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please confirm whether you successfully re-enabled System Restore, post the look.txt output and a new HijackThis log.

Hi Clint,

You have KeaneTel Toolbar installed. Some Conduit toolbars are reputed to have a certain adware/trackware functionality, and for this reason I recommend you removei it via Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs

You have µTorrent, a P2P file sharing program installed on your computer. This program does not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but peer-to-peer file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I recommend you remove it, but of course the choice is yours.
You can remove µTorrent via Add/Remove Programs.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Temporarily disable WinPatrol:
  • Open WinPatrol via the Start Menu or by double-clicking the taskbar icon
  • Select the Options tab and un-check the box marked Automatically run WinPatrol when computer starts
  • Close WinPatrol

Open AVG Antispyware and select the Status screen
Next to Resident Shield press Change state so that the status reads inactive
Close AVG Antispyware

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad into the box and press OK
Select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.
Then, copy/paste the contents of the following code box into Notepad:
@echo off
sc stop MSSysInterv1
sc delete MSSysInterv1
Select File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "runme.bat" (you MUST type the quotes)
Locate runme.bat on your Desktop and double-click it.
A black box should open and close after a short time, this is normal.
Another text file should appear on your Desktop called results.txt, do not open it until the black box has closed.
Post the contents of this file in your next response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next, please do an online scan with Kaspersky:
Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer using this link:
http://www.kaspersky...kavwebscan.html
  • Click Accept and the web scanner will begin to load
  • If a yellow warning bar appears at the top of the browser, click it and choose Install ActiveX Control
  • You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Install
  • If you are prompted about another ActiveX control called Kaspersky Online Scanner GUI part then allow it to be installed also.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on Next and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save Report As... button, change Save as type: to Text file and save the file to your desktop as Kaspersky.txt
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.

I did have some trouble but ran through everything finally. After trying the notepad file several times it never saved a file. Under AVG anti-spy, the Resident Shield was not available. The Kaspersky file and hijack log are below. After saving copies, I turned on the Winpatrol, restarted computer and ran another hijack log to see if it came back--so far that 023 file seems to be gone. Thank you and what else should we do.

Hi Clint, I'm sorry you had some difficulty, but I'm glad you managed to complete the instructions. The reports look good, how is your machine running now?

It is still slow. After I wrote the last piece, I found we have more work. Winself tried to change host file, which winpatrol blocked. But it's still trying to get access.

  • Unzip the program onto your Desktop (right-click, select Extract All... and follow the prompts)
  • Disconnect from the internet and close all running programs
  • Double click gmer.exe, let the gmer.sys driver load if asked
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...say OK
  • If there is no warning, then check that the Rootkit tab is selected and click the Scan button - don't change any settings before you do so
  • Once the scan is complete, click the Copy button
  • Open Notepad (Click Start->Run, type notepad and Enter) and hit Ctrl+V to paste the log and then save the log to your desktop

Then make a new DSS 'main' report as follows, but this time please download DSS to your Desktop before running it:
Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Make sure DSS.exe is on your Desktop
  • Press the Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:

    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config

  • A configuration box will appear, make sure all boxes are checked in the Main Log section, then un-check everything in the Extra Log section and press Scan!
Once complete, please post the new DSS main.txt report.

Once complete, please post the GMER report and the DSS main.txt, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.

Hi Clint,

Winself tried to change host file, which winpatrol blocked. But it's still trying to get access.

Does WinPatrol tell you that Winself is responsible for this, or that something is trying to change the hosts file?

Next press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command (it's one long command) into the box and press OK:

cmd /c copy "C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts" "%userprofile%\desktop\hosts.txt"

A file called hosts.txt will appear on your Desktop, please post the contents in your next response - if it's too big then attach the file to your post.

Winpatrol shows me that something is trying to change host file. The first time it tried, AVG Firewall prompted me to accept or deny this change and I denied access into the future; AVG showed it to be "winself.exe". When I restart the computer every time Winpatrol shows this same change is attempted, which I reject (Winpatrol's language). Host.txt # Copyright © 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp. # # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows. # # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name. # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one # space. # # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual # lines or following the machine name denoted by a "#" symbol. # # For example: # # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host # 127.0.0.1 localhost

Hi Clint,

Please delete hosts.txt from your Desktop
Then reboot your computer and tell WinPatrol to allow the hosts file change.
Then, repeat the previous instructions to copy the hosts file to your Desktop and post the new results here so I can see what changes have been made.

After copying the hosts file, you should immediately restore the original hosts file in case the changes were malicious, you can do so like this:

Download HostsXpert to your Desktop
  • Unzip HostsXpert.zip to your Desktop (right-click, select Extract All... and follow the prompts)
  • Open the HostsXpert folder and double click on HostsXpert.exe
  • Click Backup/Restore->Create Backup to back up your existing hosts file
  • Then click on Restore MS Hosts File and OK the prompt to restore your Hosts file to the default
  • Click on Make Hosts Read Only to secure it against changes
  • Close program when complete.
  • If for any reason you wish to restore the old hosts file, you can do so by pressing Make Writeable?, then Backup/Restore->Restore Backup and OK to the prompt.
