Good morning -

I have been trying to rid our PC of a virus for 2 days straight. It started giving crazy full page pop ups, I have lost control of using "alt, control, delete", the icons all dissappear and the pc freezes at will, and it is very slow. It does seem somewhat better after some of the removals, but still not right.

I have done lots of research the past few days and discovered that some of the culprits are Trojan Virtumonde, Mal/Generic-b, Mal/VB-N. I have attempted to rid the pc of these intruders by using different spyware. Our main protection is through Norton's. I believe it is not working properly and has possible been infected. It has never detected any of the above mentioned problems, just one cookie at a time. I have tried Vundo fix…nothing. Spyware showed 57 instances of Virtumonde, but only removed about 40, then stopped detecting it. I even removed the software and re-installed. Nothing. Then, I read that Spy Sweeper would do it. I scanned, purchased and it also claims to have removed it, but I swear the Virtumonde is still lurking and the version of Spy Sweeper I bought doesn't detect Malware…how nice, huh? So, I KNOW that is there and undetected. I have been checking out your site and you guys seem to know how to deal with all this crazy stuff, so I am asking you tech GODS to help. :)

We are PC (not MAC), XP, Nortons is System Works Basic with Internet Security 2007.

Also, advice on the best protection for the pc would be appreciated.

Take a trip to this webpage for download links and instructions for running Combofix by sUBs: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
  • Please Note: This tool may require the PC to be rebooted so close any programs you have open before you start.
  • When CF has finished, it will produce a log C:\ComboFix.txt - copy and paste it into your next reply.
  • Post a fresh HJT log as well.
  • Let me know how the PC is behaving.
Also, run HJT and click on Open the Misc Tools section.
  • Click Open Uninstall Manager…
  • Click Save list… and save it to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the file uninstall_list.txt into your next reply.
Ok….did as requested. Sorry for the slight delay. And thank you for you help.

The computer is still running slow. Windows slowly scrolling down instead of minimizing or shutting and such. No pop ups or odd messages. I have a problem now with Norton's phishing feature not allowing use. I'll investigate through Norton's on that. It was on prior to Combo Fix. The PC did allow me to turn it off the normal way (I have been having to turn it off by the button) and restarted without any errors.

Thank you!
You may need to uninstall/reinstall Norton if it won't play nicely.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • Ensure a checkmark is placed next to both Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version - you'll need to clear it with your firewall.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan and then Scan.
  • When the scan has finished, click OK and then Show Results to view the results - no surprise there!
  • If MBAM finds anything, check the box(es) and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
Let me have the MBAM log, a fresh HJT log (run in Normal Mode) AND a description of how your PC is behaving.
Alrighty….did as asked. The PC is still running pretty slow. Slow on start, slow accessing programs (Word, Excel etc), slow on the internet too. The icons dissappear when the clicked too. The Norton's problem has been fixed and Live Update actually did an update after this session (it has just been going through the motions for a while). It is a big improvement over the week as a whole. :) Thanks again for all your time and help.

Here are the logs………

I don't see anything in your HJT log that points to anything malicious, so it's necessary to go on a little bit of a fishing expedition:

1) Go here and click the Kaspersky Online Scanner button - I.E. is required for this scan.
  • Read the Requirements and limitations before you click Accept.
  • Allow the ActiveX download if necessary.
  • Once the database has downloaded click Next.
  • Click Scan Settings and check the "Scan using the following antivirus database" is set to extended, not standard, and then click OK.
  • Click on "My Computer" and then put the kettle on!
  • When the scan has completed, click Save Report As…
  • Enter a name for the file in the Filename: text box and then click the down arrow to the right of Save as type: and select text file (*.txt)
  • Click Save - by default the file will be saved to your Desktop, but you can change this if you wish.
Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a fresh HJT log, run in Normal Mode, and a description of how your PC is behaving.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

2) Download gmer.zip from here and save it to your Desktop.
You will need to unzip it before you run it.

To do this: Right click on the zipped folder and from the menu that appears, click on Extract All…
In the 'Extraction Wizard' window that opens, click on Next> and in the next window that appears, click on Next> again.
In the final window, click on Finish

Double click gmer.exe to begin:
  • If you get a message about "system modification", click Yes and work through the rest of the instructions.
  • Ensure that the Rootkit Tab at the top is selected.
  • Make sure all the boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for ‘Show All’.
  • Click the Scan button on the right.
  • When the scan has completed, (you'll have time for a snack and a cuppa!), click the Copy button underneath - this will save the report to your Clipboard.
  • Paste it into Notepad (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad) and save it somewhere convenient.
  • Click the >>> Tab at the top and select the Autostart Tab.
  • Click the Scan button on the right - this one should only take seconds to complete.
  • Save the log as before.
Copy and paste both reports into your next reply - you may need to post them separately.
The Preview option may show the whole logs being posted, but they sometimes get cut down when the actual post is made, so check the post once it is completed.
Well, this round was interesting. I was able to the Kaspersky Online Scanner although the download was slow and took me a long time to get it going. But, it did. I ran my new HJT log, no problem. My PC does NOT like the GMER program. I downloaded, extracted my files, ran the .exe file got to the first scan and it started to go no problem. I walked away, and came back just a few minutes later to a blue screen. Hmmmm, so I rebooted and tried again and sat vigil at the PC. It scanned about 2 minutes and the same blue screen popped up again. I don't see where I missed anything in your instruction, I try to really pay attention. :)

Here a paraphrase of what it said….Problem detected - windows shut down - problem by gmer.sys
tech info: stop. 0X00000050 (OXFCF3F000, OXOOOOOOOO, OXB822BBF5, OXOOOOOOOO)
gmer.sys - address B822BBF5 base B8227000, DateStamp, 47CC4FDE

beginning physical dump of memory….

PC is running about the same. Slow, taking a long time to respond.

Here's the Kaspersky log:

1) Download rootkitrevealer.zip from here and save it to your Desktop.
You will need to extract the file(s) from the zipped folder.

To do this: Right-click on the zipped folder and from the menu that appears, click on Extract All…
In the Extraction Wizard window that opens, click on Next> and in the next window that appears, click on Next> again.
In the final window, click on Finish

You should now see the contents of the rootkitrevealer folder.

2) Log off from the internet and disconnect your modem cable.

3) Exit all applications and keep the system otherwise idle during the RootkitRevealer scanning process - it does matter, so just sit back and watch not very much until it's done.

4) Double click RootkitRevealer.exe and click the Scan button to run it.
When the scan has completed, click on File > Save… and then click on the Save button.
The report will be saved as RootkitReveal.txt in the C:\Windows\System 32 folder - copy and paste it into your next reply.

Can you attach the following file to your next post, if it exists:C \WINDOWS\minidump\Mini*.dmp. I'll need to get hold of the tool's writer and see if this is an issue with the tool itself, or a malware effect.
Will you also try to run GMER in Safe Mode - if it works, post the log. If not, just let me know.
Ok…I have two minidump files, so I attached them both.

I tried running gmer in safe mode and it didn't let me use the scan button. All other buttons were available, weird…..so I tried it in normal mode just for the heck of it and it ran. Go figure. So, here are those results too.

Sorry for all the new posts…..as of today, the said PC won't even boot. I am now getting all kinds of messages from Norton's from the Go Back portion. Basically, they are saying that Norton's GoBack rebooted the computer because it detected the system was unstable. Allowing it to continue running would have caused corruption on disk #1. This unstability is probably the result of a bug in an application running on your system, but could also be hardware problems. Norton GoBack will now scan your disk to verify integrity of it data……blah, blah, blah… It does give me an option to press spacebar and try to restore to a different time, but that doesn't seem to work either. Urgh!!!! Anyway, thought that you may want to know what its doing now as well. I haven't really been using that PC except to run things for you, I was just booting it up to grab something off the hard drive. Thanks again.
Given the instability of the PC, i'd start thinking about salvaging anything of importance. If you can't get Windows up and running to do this, then a Linux boot disc, or similar, should enable you to copy files to a flash drive. I don't see anything obvious in your logs that would account for the problems you are having, which means that it's there and I can't see it, it's hiding, or it isn't there any more. If it isn't there, then the problems could be due to corruption of the OS and that isn't going to be easily repaired. If you can't get the computer running, then it's going to be next to impossible to clean, even if I could identify what was wrong with it, which at the moment I can't. My best suggestion at this time is to get whatever you need from the PC and then reformat and reinstall - it's going to be quicker and easier, as long as you have the discs, or a partition that contains the original image that you can restore from.
