[Resolved] Encountering problems

Hello. Yesterday my computer began acting strangely: hijacking the browser when I launhced Windows to connect to the 'net and taking me to something called "SpywareIsolator". Of course, I didn't download it or anything because I already have plenty of system security (AVG, Spybot S&D, Zone Alarm, Spyware Doctor), so I figured something somehow got onto my computer. In addition, every time I try to access Google, it comes up saying that it's preventing my access because I am infected with spyware and starts scanning (and then recommending that I download a "cleaner" - which I don't do). First time I've had a problem with a virus in almost 7 years; still not sure how my computer got infected since I'm a real stickler for security.

I ran AVG, Spybot and Spyware Doc and removed everything they found - which was a lot. However, problems persist. Bringing up the Task Manager results in a warning dialog titled "vlc" (VLC) and says "A call to an OS function failed". Two exe files - wdmon.exe and and vlc.exe - continually try to access the internet, but I deny them access. In the StartUp in MSCONFIG there is a program labeled adocep.exe that is running at boot, but I have no idea what it is (I'm pretty picky about allowing only certain things to run during start up).

I have run HiJackThis and would appreciate any help I can get to help resolve the problems. Log file follows:

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.


Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.


Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Thank you for replying.

After doing as you instucted, the "vlc" dialog box no longer comes up when I bring up the Task Manager and I haven't noticed either vlc.exe or wdmon.exe trying to access the internet. Going to Google still produces the "error" message that I have spyware programs and starts scanning my computer. I've also noticed that AutoComplete in the Internet Options (I'm running IE) keeps getting turned on.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, please delete it from your desktop and download this new version . It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
--------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • WARNING: IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts
  • Please do not re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish

I started running Combo Fix on the other computer and it's been sitting at "Stage 41" for over an hour now. Is that normal? I didn't click anywhere when it's been running, but I'm wondering if it's stalled or if it's just working really hard.

No it shouldn't take that long. Go ahead and stop it. Disable TeaTimer and try running the scan again You need To disable TeaTimer, it can stop our fix. The best way is to do both, Right click the system tray icon and shut down. This will reset TT's registry snapshot. Then, open spybot in advanced mode and turn it off. When cleaning is done, open Spybot in advanced mode to turn back on. Once fix is completed in the all clear post!! Enable Teatimer Open Spybot Click on Tools in bottom left hand corner. Click on Resident. Check Resident "TeaTimer" box. Click on Allow change ONLY to popup box with: Entry: SpybotSD Teatimer Click on Mode, select Default mode Close Spybot

Sorry to be difficult. I disabled Tea Timer and started the scan again, but it's still sitting at the same point as before and has been for over 30 minutes. Do I need to stop something else? I have AVG and ZoneAlarm running; could they be causing problems? I appreciate the help.

Sorry to be difficult.

I disabled Tea Timer and started the scan again, but it's still sitting at the same point as before and has been for over 30 minutes. Do I need to stop something else? I have AVG and ZoneAlarm running; could they be causing problems?

Yes. Remove your internet connection and disable AVG and Zone Alarm.
Be sure to re-enable them before connecting to the internet.

Did all that and now it's stalling at Stage 33. Is there anything else I should do to get it to complete it's scan?

Honestly, I'm really not trying to make this more difficult than it should be.

There are infections / programs that will hinder combofix.

Lets have a look at a new HijackThis log :thumbup:

Open HijackThis and select: Do a system scan and save a log file.

When the scan is finished, Click Edit> Select All> Edit> Copy> and paste its contents here [Add Reply].

Please download HostsXpert from the link below.

http://www.funkytoad.../HostsXpert.zip

Unzip HostsXpert.zip
Open HostsXpert.exe.

you have to click: ''make hosts writable'' in the top right corner, then press the ''restore MS hosts file'' option

Close program when complete.


Next:

Click Start > Run and type these commands hitting enter after each one:

sc stop FreezeScreenSaver

sc delete FreezeScreenSaver


Next:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:

My computer seems to be running ok now. Google comes up as it should and nothing out of the ordinary is trying to get internet access.

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

    You need to create a new Clean restore point.

    Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

    Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

    %SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

    Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

    Double-click My Computer.
    Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
    Click the View tab.
    Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
    Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
    Check "Hide protected operating system files."
    Click Apply, and then click OK.

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      • Click once on the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
    (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
    Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
    I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
    Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
    This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
    If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
    until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
    settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

  • Winpatrol

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
    Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

Thank you very much for the help. It is deeply appreciated. :notworthy: You say you don't use Zone Alarm anymore, which is the one that I currently have. Is there any particular one that you would suggest using?
