Thank you in advance for your time! I have endless appreciation for what you do!

A document titled "iTemplate.xls" opens each time I use Excel. My searches led me to research on VBS_GEDZA.A . I ran ATF Cleaner, Spybot (current), and Adaware, all coming up clean. More research led me to Trend Micro's System Cleaner (run from "sysclean.com"). The latter revealed that I do have infections of VBS_GEDZA.A (apparently). The log was hard to comprehend, but it looked like removal failed (and I'm sure if I did have it, I still do, as iTemplate.xls continues to do it's thing). However, I have not noticed other instances of VBS_GEDZA.A symptoms, although, I did have a virus once before (2004) that may be the same thing as I remember the Avril Lavinge photo popping up once. I used hijack this and another forum to remove it then, but can't locate the archive of that transaction now.

Here's my log:
Again, "Thanks" in advance!

***EDIT

I apologize. I completely forgot to run AVG before posting. I have since, and it detected several instances of VBS_GEDZA.A. It did it's thing with no errors. "iTemplate.xls" seems to be "gone."

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Hi. I ran ATF prior to to post, then again. Ran Malware remover, which found 2 instances of trojans. Computer seems okay. AVG found many instances that were also removed.

Thanks!

Copied below: Combofix log, new hijack this log

You need To disable TeaTimer, it can stop our fix.

The best way is to do both, Right click the system tray icon and shut down. This will reset TT's registry snapshot. Then, open spybot in advanced mode and turn it off. When cleaning is done, open Spybot in advanced mode to turn back on.

Once fix is completed in the all clear post!!

Try that again as it didn't do anything. It should produce a popup txt file to show what was removed.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::
C:\Program Files\ZoneAlarmSB\bar\1.bin\SPYBLOCK.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\system32\svphost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\scvvhost.exe

Very strange: Tea Timer was not in system tray. I closed the process in Task Manager, then disabled it @ startup in Spybot. Is this correct?

I closed TeaTimer and all other try icons I could and applied the text file to ComboFix. However, ComboFix did not offer a list of files deleted, other than what is listed in new log.

Also, when browsing through Windows Explorer, it takes an unusually long time to show the right-click menu (like when checking file properties or copying and pasting). It hasn't always been this way...

Copied below are the new logs.

THANKS!!

Combofix might not have worked right because of the location:
Running from: F:\internet\combofix\ComboFix.exe

Close all windows and browsers.
Open HijackThis

Click on Open Misc Tools
Click on Delete a File On Reboot
Click once on the file below to select it:
C:\WINDOWS\nwc.exe

Do not reboot yet

Click on the Back button to exit Process Manager

Now, back at the main screen of HijackThis, proceed to Scan

and Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwc.exe] C:\WINDOWS\nwc.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "F:\video\quicktime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Hi.

C:\WINDOWS\nwc.exe did not exist (hidden files showing)

Made checks and "fixed" with hihjack this.

Haven't been browsing enough to rate the performance at the moment...turns on and runs a wee bit slow, but nothing alarming. Again, haven't had the chance to really browse the folders and files to feel response time.

Man, this thing's a doozy, eh? What is it?

Thanks!

Here's my usual all clean post

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection.
You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.
