I need my topic re-opened please. Did not get all the way through the fixes last lef tot me by Silver, and had to leave town for work.
Since then my son tried to download Google Earth for a school project and programs did not respond.
I deleted Google Earth, and started over with the last thing Silver asked me to do and need to see if
he needs another log from me.

Hi worklifenobalance, We'll use this new topic to handle the issue. Please tell me how far through the instructions you have got, some more information on the problem you are experiencing and how your machine is running generally.

Silver,

Thanks for responding so fast. I travel for work and sometimes I have to leave with short notice, and my work laptop does not have access to my home email
and blocks alot of sites due to company firewalls.

I had only gotten as far as deleting the below:

Please delete DSS.exe and fsbl.exe from your Desktop, also delete this folder:

QUOTE
C:\Deckard

When I came home programs were slow to respond and load. My son downloaded Google Earth and it would not load all of the way either. I unistalled it.Is this program safe to download????? Does not seem to be, he had to have it for a Power Point Presentation with links to it for certain landmarks.

I ran a disk clean up for Temp Internet Files, Cookies, etc.....and then ran a Spybot Scan to make sure all was okay. Every thing seemed fine after that.
So I did the below:

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Re-enable Spybot's TeaTimer

Open Spybot S&D
Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
If your firewall raises a question, say OK
Check the box labeled Resident TeaTimer and OK any prompts.
Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot.
Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

After doing this I rebooted my desktop, I was getting alot of warnings by Spybot , there were 2 warnings that said windows files have been deleted, maybe it was from the cleaning of the System Restore? That really worried me.
Everything seems to be functioning fine, just worried that there maybe some other problems. I have not fnished doing the rest that you asked about installing
MVPS Hosts or WinPatrol. I wanted to stop and make sure before I did. I hope you do not mind, but I am attaching another Hi Jack this Log for you to look at to make sure I am okay to continue.

My apologies for not getting back to you in a faster time, your time is limited and valuable to all of us.
Thanks for your help

Hi worklifenobalance,

Google Earth is a safe program, however only if you download it from Google's websites!

The only thing that concerns me from a malware point of view is the warnings from Tea Timer, but I doubt it indicates a problem. If you can post more information from Spybot about the warnings then I can tell you more.

Your log looks fine, and we've had a good look at your machine so I don't think any problems you are experiencing are malware-related. If you experience further problems like you described with Google Earth I recommend you post in one of the general troubleshooting forums here at WhatTheTech, such as:
Microsoft Windows, or
Other software
depending on the problems you are having.

If you want to look into the Spybot reports then please post more information, and if you need help with implementing my recommendations then let me know.

Silver, I found out my son downloaded Google Earth from a link on his teachers webpage. So that may not have been good. Here is the log I recovered from Spybot. When each popped up, I hopefully made the right choice. Let me know. Yes the Spybot report looks just fine :) A link from a teacher's site is hopefully OK, but it's very important to get your software from known, reputable sources - so if you want to get Google Earth I recommend you get it from Google's site. If you have any further concerns or queries please let me know.

Silver,

Thanks for the feedback YEA! It's okay.

My Antivirus and AntiSpyware are set to auto update. I think I will be fine and we can close this topic.

Thanks again for all of your help. Your time and knowledge is greatly appreciated by me and many others. My donation is in the mail !!! :notworthy:

Worklifenobalance

I will get working on the rest of the list you had previously recommended below:

You have good protection software installed however please ensure it is kept up to date. Check that your antivirus and antispyware programs are set to automatically update themselves daily, and that your firewall is the latest version.

I recommend you install a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.
Also: subscribe to the mailing list to get update notifications.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins or ActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.
