Hi I was previously helped by a staff member on this topic:

http://forums.whatth...amp;hl=mooglemc

After it was resolved, about 2 days later, I found that I was getting error messages again when I startup my computer, specifically from tavo.exe and kavo.exe. According to the last forum post on that topic, I ought to contact a staff member but I am unable to use the messaging tool to contact the staff member who helped me.

My problem is as follows:
I receive the following messages on startup (sometimes I don't get the messages, sometimes I do):

tavo.exe. - Application Error

The instruction at "0x10011e3b" referenced memory at "0x0000003b". The memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program

kavo.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x1001205f" referenced memory at "0x000000ff". The memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program

Note: on the topic I say "cavo.exe" that is a typo. I mean to say kavo.exe

I believe I am infected because I have in the past browsed questionable websites and downloaded questionable things however ever since getting help for my problem I have not gone to anymore questionable websites or downloaded anything questionable. Here is a current HijackThis Log:

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

So after I ran the MalwareBytes program and I told it to remove all selected, it told me the following files couldn't be deleted:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\kavo0.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tavo0.dll

In order to delete them it said I needed to reboot my computer. I did reboot to delete them but I hope that wasn't the wrong thing to do since I had just remembered you said not to delete anything specific until I was told too... oops.

Right now my computer will only occassionally come up with the error messages from tavo and kavo.exe. I would say that the error messages show up about 1/8 times I boot my computer. Also when I am using my web browser and I often upload files to email attachments, the window that pops up in which I can select the file that I want to upload from my computer, the default list always lists my files in reverse alphabetical order... I have no idea why this is happening. It isn't a big issue but it is kind of annoying.

That was the correct thing to do

Lets dig deeper.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, please delete it from your desktop and download this new version . It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
--------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • WARNING: IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts
  • Please do not re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish

In addition to this, as I ran ComboFix my McAfee Virus scan notified me of a "PUP" or potentially unwanted program:

I clicked the "give me more information button" and this is the following message McAfee gives me:

Program name: RemAdm-ProcLaunch171
File: psexec.cfexe
File path: C:\ 327882R2FWJFW
Status: PUP found

And then it gives me the option to remove it or trust it. I clicked cancel since I have no idea what to do with it. I don't know what it is and you told me not to delete anything until instructed.

Shortly after McAfee gives me another message, this time telling me I have a virus, here is the following message:

The file C:\Documents and Settings\[My Name, not given here for personal reasons]\Local Settings\Temp\A... is infected by the EICAR test file virus and cannot be cleaned. Then it gives me the option of deleting it. Once again I select cancel since you did tell me not to delete anything unless instructed to do so.

Well that's it so far. I appreciate the help.

Also when I run ComboFix the same messages that I talked about in my previous post come up. I don't know if McAfee is confused because of combofix, but they only show up when I use combofix. Currently I am not getting any error messages from kavo or tavo.exe.

That's an issue with McAfee.

Good job

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Here's my usual all clean post

    Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

    %SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

    Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
    Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      • Click once on the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Note: I no longer suggest Zone Alarm

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Winpatrol

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:

Hi LDTate Everything looks good. I uninstalled ComboFix and I also created the system restore point. But unfortunately for some reason every time I write an email and I want to add a file as an attachment the window that pops up where I can choose the file to attach, the way in which the files are listed, they are listed in revers alphabetical order, which is really annoying me. I was wondering if you had any insights into how to change that. I can change it manually but it seems to revert to the default "reverse alphabetical order" every time I use the email attachment window.

I have no idea but you could post a new topic here:

Hi LDTate Everything seemed fine but now I have a new problem. In the same vein as the tavo.exe and kavo.exe, I put in a flash drive of mine into my computer and I got a similar error message from i.bat... any idea what it is? Should I start a new topic? This did not occur on startup, when I put in my flash drive this happened, so I dunno if my flash drive is infected.

Yes the flashdrive is infected.

Download & run this file
http://www.techsuppo...Disinfector.exe

Be sure to insert any flash drives or USB devices that you use. This needs to be run on each item.

After the above:

Hi LDTate I haven't yet run the disinfector because I am very busy with schoolwork, but I will do so soon. I am planning to run it on my usb drive, my SD card and an external hard drive I have. Unfortunately recently I went to Start->Run and typed in msconfig to check my startup processes. I usually do this to see if tavo or kavo has returned. Unfortunately kavo has returned again, listed as a startup process in msconfig. The tavo.exe is nowhere in sight but I believe it may be around the corner. I used malwarebytes to scan for it and lo and behold it detects it, 4 items from kavo. I plan to run the disinfector but apparently I feel this must mean that it must be something I downloaded that I must delete. I am afraid that if I continue coming to you guys for help, you will help me in removal but it will never be removed since it keeps coming back, which may mean that I need to delete either some other origin files or programs that may have questionable motives. I will get back to you as soon as I use the disinfector on all external drives. I will post as soon as possible. If you are wondering what the malwarebytes log looks like, here it is: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.11 Database version: 599 Scan type: Quick Scan Objects scanned: 32135 Time elapsed: 6 minute(s), 19 second(s) Memory Processes Infected: 0 Memory Modules Infected: 1 Registry Keys Infected: 0 Registry Values Infected: 1 Registry Data Items Infected: 0 Folders Infected: 0 Files Infected: 2 Memory Processes Infected: (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Infected: C:\WINDOWS\system32\kavo0.dll (Rootkit.Agent) -> No action taken. Registry Keys Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Values Infected: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\kava (Rootkit.Agent) -> No action taken. Registry Data Items Infected: (No malicious items detected) Folders Infected: (No malicious items detected) Files Infected: C:\WINDOWS\system32\kavo0.dll (Rootkit.Agent) -> No action taken. C:\WINDOWS\system32\kavo.exe (Rootkit.Agent) -> No action taken. I haven't yet deleted anything since I wanted to consult you. Should I start deleting files/programs that may be questionable? Also I heard that I ought to be removing the malware in safemode. What do you think?
