In Avast, I either repaired or quarantined (moved to chest) the infected stuff. Subsequent scans using Avast antivirus, Kaspersky online scanner, and Spybot have all come up clean. I have also made full scans using AdAware and removed everything it found.

I ran the ATF cleaner.

Here is my HiJackThis log:

Welcome to the Forums.

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear. So lets do this to the end!

  • Save and quit any work your doing before beginning the fix.
  • All hijackthis logs I ask for should be done in normal mode ( not safe mode)
  • These logs should be done last after you have followed my instructions in the previous post.

Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

Thanks so much! Have just seen your response and will follow your instructions to the letter. It will be later this afternoon, though. As for gha.charter.mi, Charter Communications is my ISP. This is my dad's computer I am fixing for him. I have it at my house. At his house, in a different town, the ISP is also Charter. I should also tell you that, when I ran an Avast Boot Time scan last night, the following turned up: ---------------------------------------- 04/09/2008 23:15 Scan of all local drives File C:\Program Files\BroadJump\Client Foundation\CFD.exe is infected by Win32:Rootkit-gen [Rtk], Moved to chest File C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks 2005\Components\PConfig\Data1.cab\QBFAM04.chm\tutorial.swf Error 42136 File C:\System Volume Information\_restore{202550A8-7A33-4BCA-9586-051D24DDBF8F}\RP739\A0132919.exe is infected by Win32:Rootkit-gen [Rtk], Moved to chest Number of searched folders: 7953 Number of tested files: 452976 Number of infected files: 2 I have since used Add/Remove programs to uninstall BroadJump. Before that, I also scanned those folders and files (except for the System Volume Restore) with Kaspersky and they were reported as clean. I will likely remove QuickBooks as well. But first I will do as you instruct. Thanks again!

I uninstalled all of the Java stuff, as instructed. I left JavaTM 6 Update 5. But there was also this listed in the Add/Remove Programs list: JavaTM SE RunTime Environment 6 Update 1. I left it.

I did HJT and Navilog, as instructed. The logs for these are below. However, Deckard's Scan was a bust. The program would start and nearly finish, but then bail, and I got the standard Microsoft error message,

"dss.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
Blah Blah
Please tell Microsoft about this problem"

I sent an error report. I tried to run dss.exe again. The same thing happened. Therefore I do not have a DSS log to show you.

Here is the HJT log:

I ran dss.exe again. It failed to finish again. Got the same error again. Here is more info on that error:

dss.exe
Error signature
AppName: dss.exe AppVer: 3.2.8.1 ModName: ntdll.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 Offset: 00010f29

I did manage to find the two text files "main" and "extra". Their contents are below. However, it does not seem as if they are complete.

Here is main.txt

Ok, I found out how to get dss.exe to run. I do this:

Start --> Run, then paste in this command and then press enter: "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config
You follow the prompts and then the DSS configuration dialog appears.

Which boxes do I check? I tried checking all the boxes, then scanned. It worked and the two text files main.txt and extra.txt were generated. But I am not sure if you want me to post the logs containing all that information. Please advise.

Try this for me.

Click start > Run > in the empty edit box copy&paste this line :

"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daft

Read the disclaimer and click OK.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • Place a checkmark next to the following entries in case they appear:

.bat
.cmd
.inf
.ini
.reg
.txt
.vbs
  • Click the Fix button.
  • Re-scan and save a logfile. By default, it will save as daft.txt
  • I'll need that log later.
If everything is ok again, it should display the "all associations ok message"

Post back with the contents of daft.txt.

Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from
the network address (DHCP) server.

I haven't been getting pop-ups, but then I haven't been surfing, either.
Next step?

I would go to add/remove programs and uninstall this

My Way Search Assistant

Then Navigate to and delete this folder I have in bold type

c:/Program files/My Way Search Assistant

Short of that I don't see anything left in the way of malware in your logs. We had gotten Win Budget removed. That's known for some pop-ups.
Surf around a bit and please let me know.

Tried to do Add/Remove Programs to uninstall My Way Search Assistant. Got the following error message: RUNDLL Error loading C:\PROGA~1\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\desrcas.dll The specified module could not be found Went to specified path and deleted the specified folder My Way Search Assistant. Thanks for all your help. You have inspired me to join the classroom. Now I must tell you that this is my Dad's computer and I am cleaning it up for him. His surfing habits are different than mine and he likes to use AOL even though I tell him not to. So, I don't know if I will be able to duplicate the pop-up experience that he has been having. I could try... Thanks again for everything. You are an angel.

One more thing. Could you recommend a routine that I might use to periodically tidy up this machine? Many, many thanks.

Great news ! Posted Image

Your log now appears to be clean.

Lets do a few things to tidy up.
Please do these in the order I suggest!

______________________________

Delete theDeckards system scanner from your desktop.

I see no evidence of a fire wall. I suggest you get one in place now.

A few words on Microsofts firewall in XP . It only works in one direction. Incoming.
That means if something gets by it you would never know it was trying
to contact the internet.
Example: A bad program installs itself. You would never know it was contacting the internet.
Downloading other nasties and so forth.

If you decide to run one of these you should be certain Microsofts firewall is disabled.
To disable it.

I will list a few free firewalls for you. These are good (free) firewalls:

Never run 2 firwalls together. They will interfere with each other.
So just download and install one!

Comodo

Sunbelt Personal Firewall

Online armor Firewall

This tool bar will help protect you from.

Over 4,000 fake bank and credit sites.

them.

spyware, a virus or adware

Download and Install a HOSTS File
A Hosts file is a plain text file which prevents your computer from connecting to malware and spyware sites by redirecting the connection request to 127.0.0.1, which is your local address. If you use a proxy server, or if you are on AOL, be sure to read the special instructions.
You can download the MVPS Hosts File and see a HOSTS file tutorial here :
This website also contains useful tips, and links to other resources and utilities.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure
1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
2. Click on the Security tab
3. Click the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
4. Click on Default Level and click Ok
5. Click on the Custom Level button.

Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt

When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

6. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Here's a site with great advise on how to AVOID malware. Much easier to do than removing it.

Safe and Happy Surfing. :)
