[Cooncatz]

Hi. I have been having problems for a while, hangups, crashing several times an hour, popups, lagging, slowness. I did Adaware, Ccleaner, AVG, Spyware blaster. Nothing changed. Then a few days ago I really crashed all the way to shutdown and got the blue page about the system finding an error and needing to be restarted.
So, after that I re-did everything plus did a defrag.
No more blue screen crashes, but I am still booting several times with all the other complaints. Is something lurking about?

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.


Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.


Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

• Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
• At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
• When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.

Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, please delete it from your desktop and download this new version . It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

• Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
• WARNING: IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts

  Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points
  
  Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

  Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.
  
  Double-click My Computer.
  Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  Click the View tab.
  Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
  Check "Hide protected operating system files."
  Click Apply, and then click OK.
  
  
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
• Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
  (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  
  
• Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
  Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
  I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
  Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

• Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
  This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
  If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
  until there are no more critical updates.
  
  
• Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
  settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

• Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
  Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Hello, I'm Cooncatz and you helped me yesterday with my Hijack log. Well, somewhere along the line last night I crashed. (I don't shut down at night.) I was afraid I was not going to get back online! All my usual tricks did not work! Finally, after 4 tries at shutting down, shutting down the modem and unplugging the PC, I remembered to unplug the router power supply and then I got back online. I'm confused because this is what was happening in the first place, but not as bad of a crash. I found one of those crash reports on my desktop this morning, and actually have been getting them several times a day. It's a always a Java error on these. (I recently updated to the lastest version because of this and it was suggested on their website, but it did not resolve this totally.) After I updated I will just get the reports on my desktop w/o a browser crash. It's about a dozen or so a day!) But this time it was a total crash. I can't be sure it was all Java's fault though... what do I know? I did submit a log here for my son last night (I cringe to see what all he has going on...), and I wonder if his PC problems are maybe behind this? If so, I'm worried. I work at home on the PC. What can I do?

I do not stay on-line, I just have my computer on. I close all my programs and just leave the machine running. It is just more convenient as it takes a long time to start up. Sometimes I have to get on it quick for work. It's been my understanding all these years that I do not have to power off, so I don't. If I'm not online, I can't be getting hacked into, can I? Or is this a stupid question? JZ

As far as being off-line, it depends if your internet connection is still active.

Well, at night, I shut down the internet and the email (I use Outlook Express). I just have the power supply on so the desktop is active, but I'm not online. If that makes any sense. I also got a "Internet Explored encountered a problem with an add-on and had to shutdown" error a couple hours a go. It is in regards to the Google toolbar. Good grief, what is wrong with this thing?
