use windows sfc (system file checker) You'd need your XP CD to make this work.
Click Start> Run> type sfc /scannow Note the space.
(Note that there is a space between sfc and /scannow)

ok well i got it to scan finally but it's not on the updated definitions. The scan just barely started so i dont' know how long it will take to finish. It's taking time behind actions again ><

I'm sorry man, i've had to hard shutdown about 3 or 4 times to get anything to process. This may be more work than it's worth

i got the sfc /scannow to run but now it's stuck on verifying the windows files, the process bar hasn't even moved like it's doing anything...been about 4 minutes

Best to give it some more time. It really acts like a Windows software issue right now or hard drive issues.

it's not starting up. It gets to the boot screen and says "Sorry for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change may have caused this" and then asks to choose how to start windows (normal, safe mode, safe mode with networking, etc etc). When left to countdown and start windows in normal, it just repeats the process over and over
