Hi macblack,

Netcom.3 sent me here to get fixes and post logs.

Please tell me what you mean by this. Have you been communicating with Netcom3 Software?
The Netcom3 program installed on your computer is considered to be a rogue product. Typically, rogue programs do not provide any security benefits, and use false positives to goad users into purchasing a full version of the program. See here for more information:

Netcom3 Cleaner claims to be a spyware scanner for the Windows platform. It is known to report clean systems as unhealthy and requires the user to register before providing removal.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.
Also, please confirm what symptoms you are experiencing.

 Thanks for the help silver. This all started when I noticed my internet connection(Comast) had slowed while watching Netflix movies online, (it would stop and have to reload) which was not that big of a deal. Also my virtual memory kept running low. Then I read an artical in the star tribune about PC cleaners and while reserching various products came accross Netcom.3 which claimed to be the best. So I registered the product and ran a scan or vice versa. 3 Errors in the log could not be removed and they said that I had a newer version of adware/spyware that they would need some more detailed logs to understand what the problem was, had me run Hijack this and I ended up here.
Here are the logs from DSS you asked for. I'm a novice, so thank you for the clear instructions. :notworthy:

I also posted my earlier Hijackthis log with Netcom.3 at their site. Would it be advisable to drop netcom.3 since it sounds like a bogus product? Also these 3 items are in the adware/spyware window of my Netcom3 program that they are not able to remove:#limewire - #wurldmedia - #istbar .

Thanks again silver.

Hi macblack,

I also posted my earlier Hijackthis log with Netcom.3 at their site. Would it be advisable to drop netcom.3 since it sounds like a bogus product? Also these 3 items are in the adware/spyware window of my Netcom3 program that they are not able to remove:#limewire - #wurldmedia - #istbar

Yes it would be advisable to 'drop' Netcom.3, but please don't make changes to your system just yet. I will help you with the removal of the program. I wouldn't be concerned about the scan results as they may not be reliable, we will install a reputable malware scanner and see what that turns up.

First, I need to see the DSS extra.txt log.
You should find the original extra.txt located in this folder or a subfolder under it named with the date and time of the scan:
C:\Deckard\System Scanner

If you can't find it for any reason, you can make another one as follows:
  • Make sure DSS.exe is on your Desktop
  • Press the Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:

    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config

  • A configuration box will appear, make sure all the boxes under Main Log are un-checked and all the boxes in the Extra log section are checked then press Scan!

Once complete, please post the DSS extra.txt log.

Hi macblack,

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, look down the list for these items and remove them:

ALOT eMusic Toolbar
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_06
JavaT 6 Update 3
Netcom3 Cleaner 1.0

The Java installations are out of date and now a security risk, you already have the latest update (JavaT 6 Update 5) don't remove that one.

You have Ask Toolbar installed on your system. This program is not malware, but it may report on your surfing behavior and is considered undesirable, see here and here for more information. If you actually use this program, consider a safe alternative such as Google Toolbar.
I recommend you remove this program via Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs

You have BitTorrent and FrostWire, P2P file sharing programs installed on your computer. These programs do not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but peer-to-peer file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I recommend you remove them, but of course the choice is yours.
You can remove these programs via Add/Remove Programs.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines:

R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=userinit.exe
O18 - Filter: text/html - {C9BD8D17-C5B3-461F-972A-0BDA668145CE} - (no file)

You have websites in your Trusted Zone. Any sites in the Trusted Zone are a security risk, so unless you need them to be there in order for the sites to work then please remove them by checking these lines:

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.comcast.net (HKCU)
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.www.pogo.com (HKCU)

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Clean with MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
  • Please download the Installer to your Desktop from here:
    http://www.besttechi.../mbam-setup.exe
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to both of these options:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When finished, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to your Desktop, and post the contents in your reply.
  • The log can also be found here if you need it:
    • Start->All Programs->Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware->Logs

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the MalwareBytes Antimalware report along with a new HijackThis log.

Hi macblack,

You're welcome :) Yes it looks like the Netcom3 uninstaller doesn't remove much, don't worry we'll remove it manually:

Question: along with IE, I occaisionaly run Mozzilla Firefox, should I have any concerns with that browser?

Many people think that Firefox is more secure than IE, in fact both have security flaws but IE's have probably been exploited more often. Firefox doesn't support ActiveX so a whole class of security problems is avoided by using that browser. Running Firefox with the NoScript extension is a very safe way to browse the web, IE can be configured similarly but it is more difficult to administrate. The most important thing with any browser (and OS) is keeping it up to date with security fixes - Firefox takes care of itself but you must use Windows Update or Automatic Updates to keep Windows and IE secure.

Open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad into the box and press OK
Select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.
Then, copy/paste the contents of the following code box into Notepad:
@echo off
sc stop Netcom3
sc delete Netcom3
del runme.bat
Select File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "runme.bat" (you MUST type the quotes)
Locate runme.bat on your Desktop and double-click it.
A black box should open and close after a short time, this is normal.

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following line:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpyClean] C:\Program Files\Netcom3 Cleaner\SpyClean.exe

You have Internet Explorer control panel settings restrictions in place. These may have been put in place by protection software for security reasons, but if you wish to remove them then also check these lines:

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Now, reboot your computer

Use Windows Explorer (right-click Start, select Explore) to find and delete the following folder:

C:\Program Files\Netcom3 Cleaner

If you have trouble deleting this, please let me know in your next response.

Next, please do an online scan with Kaspersky:
Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer using this link:
http://www.kaspersky...kavwebscan.html
  • Click Accept and the web scanner will begin to load
  • If a yellow warning bar appears at the top of the browser, click it and choose Install ActiveX Control
  • You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Install
  • If you are prompted about another ActiveX control called Kaspersky Online Scanner GUI part then allow it to be installed also.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on Next and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save Report As... button, change Save as type: to Text file and save the file to your desktop as Kaspersky.txt
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky report along with a new HijackThis log. Also let me know how your computer is running now.

Hi macblack,

It might look infected but the only bad file is located in the Recycle Bin, the rest of the detections were SmitfraudFix which is harmless but should also be deleted. We will get rid of all the detected files as follows:

Use Windows Explorer (right-click Start, select Explore) to find and delete the following]:

C:\Documents and Settings\Elizabeth\Desktop\SmitfraudFix.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Elizabeth\Desktop\SmitfraudFix <- whole folder
F:\Backup\ZACCARDI\C\Documents and Settings\Elizabeth\Desktop\SmitfraudFix <- whole folder
F:\Backup\ZACCARDI\C\Documents and Settings\Elizabeth\Desktop\SmitfraudFix.exe

Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Once complete, please let me know if you had any problems with the instructions and tell me how your computer is running now.

I will do as you ask and then report back to you, but first I wanted to show you what netcom3 advised me to do. Mark, Please follow the below mentioned steps: 1. Go to My Computer, Tools-->Folder Options-->View(tab) select "Show hidden files and folders" and click OK. 2. Restart your PC and as soon as your system boots press F8 key continuously, it will take you to the command prompt. Select safe mode and press enter. 3. Go to My Computer, C:\Program Files\morpheus and delete all files and folders present in it, again go to C:\Program Files\limewire and delete all files and folders present in it. 4. Go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\totem shared and delete all files and folders present in it. 5. Restart your PC normally and scan with Netcom3, and fix if any error found. Regards: Support Team. Hi macblack,

Please do this in addition to the previous steps:

Press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command (it's one long command) into the box and press OK:

cmd /c dir "C:\Program Files\Common Files\totem shared" /a /s >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt"

A black box will open and a file will appear on your Desktop called look.txt.
Please wait until the black box closes before opening look.txt and post the contents in your next response.
