[Resolved] Cannot boot into Safe Mode - Smitfraud Infection

Hi everybody,

My PC (Win XP, SP2) has been hit with the Smitfraud spyware. Symptoms - (1) My desktop background has changed, (2) I get the fake Windows Security Center alerts, (3) IE opening randomly with links to some so-called anti-spyware software and (4) the "Your PC is infected" popups from the system tray.

There's a wonderful Self Help guide on how to remove it on this forum, but I cannot use it because I cannot boot into Safe Mode. Whenever I choose any of the 3 safe mode options after pressing F8, a lot of drivers load, and after loading them, my PC immediately reboots.

Initially, I thought it was a problem with the drivers. The last driver is SPTD.sys which appears in bold white at the bottom of the screen (you can cancel it by pressing Esc). I thought that this was the problem, so on the next atttempt I pressed Esc to skip loading that driver. It didn't work, my PC simply rebooted at the driver before that (AVGxxxx.sys)

Then somebody told me Nero InCD has some issues with Safe Mode. I uninstalled Nero, but it didnt help.

Now I think it might have to do with spyware. This is my HJT log.

Suspicious items in the above - "C:\Program Files\Bat\Bat.dll" and "C:\Program Files\No-IP\DUC20.exe", neither of which I use.

Please help.

What I've done so far [All done in WinXP normal mode, because I cannot access Safe Mode]:

ATF Cleaner
Cleared all files except a few which remained even after restarting my PC. These are Smitfraud related files e.g. c:\windows\temp\Salm.exe

Super Antispyware
Installed and ran this after reading somewhere online that it would help. Didnt help at all.

SmitfraudFix
Installed and ran this tool. Scanned my system and choose the "Clean option". Scanned again, and noticed the message in the log file "C:\windows\default.htm FOUND!" I deleted this file and ran the scan again, this file showed up again. All the spyware symptoms came back immediately after the Clean.

Spybot
Ran it numerous times. Everytime I run it, I get around 15 different problems, I choose to fix them, and they get "fixed". Unfortunately, I run Spybot immediately after, and the same problems show up again. I've done this around 5 times already. Here's my Spybot report:

If you still need help, Scan again with HijackThis, and copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.

Thanks for the response!

After a lot of research online, I realized that a previous infection had messed up the Safe Mode registry entries. Using a good copy of these entries from here, I was able to restore Safe Mode.

I then proceeded with instructions on the self-help page for the Smitfraud infection of this very forum, and I ***think*** I've cleared up the problem. Most of the symptoms are gone, except that Spybot keeps reporting infections like Zedo and DoubleClick.

Am I free from all infections now?

Yes, you still have some bad guys onboard, but we'll get them

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.

Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Lets dig a little deeper and make sure nothing is hiding.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, please delete it from your desktop and download this new version . It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
WARNING: IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts
Please do not re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish

I've done as you said. Also, you should know that after running the Malwarebytes software, I keep getting this error message on startup:

You have combofix in a temp folder
D:\Temp\ComboFix.exe
It needs to be on your desktop or this won't work.

Looks like you can see with running cracked software how you were infected.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Thanks for your help LDTate

I've done as you said and moved the ComboFix to my desktop. Unfortunately my PC restarted after I finished running Combofix, so I could not save the log contents. Sorry

My internet connection keeps disconnecting every few minutes or so and I have to restart my PC to get the connection going. This occurs everytime I get the svchost.exe error message, which is as follows:

Open C:\DOCments and settings\ALLIST~1\LOCAL Settings\Temp <–Delete everything in this folder.

Thanks LDTate. That solved the svchost.exe error problem. You have been really helpful.

I have no other symptoms of a malware infection, but I still get random disconnects which force me to restart my PC to connect to the Net. Do you have any ideas? Should I re-install Windows (repair console)?

Have you every reset your external Modem / Router? Turn off the PC. Unplug the power from the Modem and/or Router Wait minutes Plug the power back in for the Modem and/or Router Reboot your PC.

I did that just now LDTate. I didn't see any noticeable difference though.
Meanwhile some of the old beasties are back. Have no idea how.

I haven't been online too much because of my modem issues, so I doubt the problem came from the Net. My guess is that something is still on my PC.

I get this message, even though I deleted the files in C:\DOCUME~1\ALLIST~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\ as you said:

So I deleted the files in C:\DOCUME~1\ALLIST~1\LOCALS~1\Temp. But I couldn't find the above files! This, even after following your earlier instructions

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

So I deleted the folder "Temp" itself and created a new one called Temp.
But guess what. I restarted my PC and in half an hour, I got the same message, but with different files, as below:

Everytime this happens, it also changes my desktop to look like the attached file..The taskbar has changed to the Classic Windows style taskbar. Pic is attached below. Functionally, it's still the same. And my Internet connection disconnects and hangs, forcing a restart.

AVG also reports an infection in three places.

1. the System Restore volume (Tool.FF virus)
2. My modem file - C:\Program Files\Efficient Networks\SpeedStream DSL\Spdstrm.exe (Virus name is Trojan Horse Downloader.Generic6.AKKW)
3. Registry key with link to the above file "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run\DSL Monitor

Oh and I tried to do some self-fixing up, and I noticed "Bandook FWB++ RAT" in the list of "allowed exceptions" on my Windows Firewall. I promptly disabled it because I read online that it's a Trojan/backdoor tool. I hope this is OK. It was loading from the file C:\Documents and Settings\admin.A\Desktop\Data\Bandook v1.35.EXE

What am I doing wrong

Just because you are using the internet doesn't mean you're not connected to the internet.
When you start your pc it connects to your modem / router and it's connected to the outside world.

Lets run an F-Secure online scan it will scan for Viruses, Spyware and RootKits:

Click HERE
Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Start scanning button. A window will pop up.
Allow the Active X control to be installed on your computer, then click the Accept button
Click Full System Scan and allow the components to download and the scan to complete.
If malware is found, check Submit samples to F-Secure then select Automatic cleaning
When cleaning has finitished, click Show report (this will open an Internet Explorer window containing the report)
Highlight and Copy (CTRL + C) the complete report, and Paste (CTRL + V) in a new reply to this post

If Automatic cleaning with Submit samples hangs, click Cancel, then New Scan

When the cleaning option is presented, Uncheck Submit samples to F-Secure
Click Automatic cleaning
When cleaning has finitished, click Show report (this will open an Internet Explorer window containing the report)
Highlight and Copy (CTRL + C) the complete report, and Paste (CTRL + V) in a new reply to this post

Note: This scan will only work with Internet Explorer.
You must be logged on a administrator rights to run this scan.
The scan may take a few hours.

Also let me know how the computer is running now.

OK, it looks like my PC is slowly recovering!!! I haven't experienced any disconnections from the net so far.

I haven't got that taskbar-changing problem I described in my last post.

Am I clean? I did the F-Secure test as you said.
