Dear Expert,

My home pc, once again after some months of peace, has started to bahve in a weird way again. This time, hoewever, I think the problem is serious. To make a long story short, the pc is:
1) Slow
2) displaying error messages very often
3) closing up applications suddenly and sometimes every few seconds
4) not allowing AVG to read any portion of the disc to perform a scan
5) when I restarted the machine, giving an error message saying that the startup process could not be carried out because the file "system32\drivers\isapnp.sys" was corrupted.
6) e.g., it took me more than half an hour to start a session of IE and enter you site

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Sorry about the delay in responding

First of all, uninstall the copy of HijackThis that you have. It's now out of date.


Install HijackThis

• Download HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.
• Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
• By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
• Click on Install.
• It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
• Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
• Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
• Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.

Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.



Please make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.


Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

If you already have Combofix, please delete that copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.

Please download Combofix from Bleeping Computer.

If you can't download it from there, please try these 2 alternative sites:

• Save it to your Desktop.
• Disconnect from the Internet, than disable your anti-virus and any real-time anti-spyware monitors that are running.
• Click Start>Run copy/paste or type "%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall into the Run box and click OK.
• When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply with a new HijackThis log.

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Doubleclick on Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives. This may include your mobile phone.

• Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
• At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
• When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
• The log can also be found here:
  C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

The RC is what you need. Ive no idea why it doesnt install by default, but there you go...

There are instructions HERE but it might be best if you were to post in this room HERE because adjustments to the commands would be needed and Im not the best person for that.

Let's finish here first.


Backup Your Registry with ERUNT

Time for some housekeeping

• Click START then RUN
• Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the x and the /u, it needs to be there.
  
  

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a good program to keep. If you wish to keep it, use it to do a quick scan once a week and keep it updated.

Dear Scotty, Just a detail before I continue with your instructions. In order to carry out the last set of operations (Combo, MBA;. HJT), I was obliged to disinstall AVG... This was the only way I found to scan the machine without incurring in problems (pc stuck, 30' to restart it- had to physically unplug it!). I have done this yeasterday morning and forgit to mention it in my previous 2 emails... Maybe not relevant but I certainly am not the best person to judge this! ;-) Thanks! a

Hi Well just carry out the final instructions and reinstall AVG then follow my link to repair that corrupted file. It may well be that the infection corrupted AVG, we are seeing a lot of that at the moment. Some computers are having a few programs that are being infected and need to be re-installed.

I have followed your suggestions all the way through the RC part... For that, I have tried my best but did not succeed. It is likely that the Win XPSP 2 inst disk that I have burned ("unexpectedly" found a copy on my protable HD ;-)) may not be "perfect"... I will wait to get a "reliable" copy next week-end and try again. If I will still fail then, I will certainely post this "final" problem in the other room, as you have suggested.
