Hi laffenjoh,

I'm sorry you are feeling frustrated by this, but you are quite right to be cautious, and the instructions should guide you through every step - it seems they do not in this case :( . Dragging the MS file onto ComboFix does start ComboFix - but ComboFix only installs the Recovery Console as a result so you could have pressed Yes.

But...you mentioned that OfficeScan found an infected file in ComboFix - this does happen occasionally which is why we ask to disable active protection. It's likely to stop ComboFix from running correctly so I'd prefer to try a different method. I'll do my best to ensure the instructions are very accurate:

Make hidden/system files and folders visible:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Show hidden files and folders
UNCHECK the Hide extensions for known file types option
UNCHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Click Yes to confirm and press OK

Backup Your Registry with ERUNT:
  • Download erunt.zip to your Desktop from here:
    http://aumha.org/downloads/erunt.zip
  • Right-click erunt.zip, select Extract All... and follow the prompts to extract ERUNT to a new folder on your Desktop
  • Inside the new folder, double-click ERUNT.exe to start the program
  • OK all the prompts to back up your registry to the default location.
Note: if it is necessary to restore the registry, open the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

Download authpack.reg to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
Locate authpack.reg on your Desktop, it should look like this:Posted Image if it doesn't then stop and let me know.
Don't use this file just yet.

Download UnDLL by Eset to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Right-click undll.zip, select Extract All... and follow the prompts to extract ERUNT to a new folder on your Desktop
  • Open the new folder and double-click UNDLL.EXE to start the program
  • Click the Select infected DLL button, then browse and select this file:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\xxyvsrro.dll

  • UnDLL will now attempt to delete the file
  • If prompted to reboot your computer, say No
  • Repeat the above steps for this file:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\yayaAQjG.dll

  • Locate authpack.reg on your desktop and double-click it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, click Yes. You should then receive confirmation that the file was merged successfully.
  • Now reboot your computer

Once your computer has rebooted, make a new main.txt with DSS as follows:
  • Make sure DSS.exe is on your Desktop
  • Press the Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:

    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config

  • A configuration box will appear, make sure all boxes are checked in the Main Log section, then un-check everything in the Extra Log section and press Scan!

Once complete, please post the new DSS main.txt, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.

Hi Silver, Let's hope things work out this time :) Just one question before I start: I did the ERUNT Backup of my Registry according to your instructions in one of your previous posts. Should I run ERUNT.exe once again? /Lars

Hi again Silver,

I followed your instructions (and ran ERUNT Backup of my Registry again), and this time
everything went on just fine :)

The spyware warning/blue wallpaper on my desktop is still there and OfficeScan still
detects "Cryp_Tap-2", however, the infected Files are now "gpwbrlsq.dll" and "GPWBRLSQ.DLL".
The only difference is that OffiseScan does not go on like crazy anymore - this session it created
a list of only 14 "Cryp_Tap-2 entries" (with the above files reported as infected)

/Lars

Here is the DSS main log:

Hi laffenjoh,

I'm glad things worked this time and that log looks better but there is still active malware there, let's try UnDLL again:

  • Double-click UNDLL.EXE to start the program
  • Click the Select infected DLL button, then browse and select this file:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\gpwbrlsq.dll

  • If prompted to reboot your computer, say Yes and allow the reboot

Then, make a new main.txt with DSS:
  • Make sure DSS.exe is on your Desktop
  • Press the Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:

    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config

  • A configuration box will appear, make sure all boxes are checked in the Main Log section, then un-check everything in the Extra Log section and press Scan!

Once complete, please post the new DSS main.txt report.

Hi Silver,

No reports of Cryp_Tap-2 infected files from OfficeScan anymore! :)
However, the Spyware warning / blue wallpaper is still there.
Upon booting the computer, I now get a message that a path could not be found (or something like that) containing the name of the file I just deleted with undll.

/Lars

Here comes the main DSS log:

Hi laffenjoh,

Yes we are making progress and there is still a bit of cleaning to do but hopefully it should be a bit easier from here on in.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {77701e16-9bfe-4b63-a5b4-7bd156758a37} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [74f398c4] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\gpwbrlsq.dll",b

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please open this page in your browser:
http://www.bleepingc....php?channel=32

Fill in the link to topic field with a link to this topic
Copy/paste the following into the Browse to the file you want to submit field:

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\AUCC04.EXE

Then press Send File, this will upload the file for analysis

------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to start the program once more.
  • Copy the lines in the OTMoveIt file list below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
    OTMoveIt File List:
    C:\WINDOWS\svpekgongpv.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\stfngdvw.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\fkdnrwsv.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\dwltqnmx.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\gxsnorab
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\yuwfymmy.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\gpwbrlsq.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\flutpggw.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\GjQAayay.ini2
    C:\VundoFix Backups
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\flutpggw.dll
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Then click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of it and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • If OTMoveIt asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report will appear in Notepad after the reboot.
  • Close OTMoveIt2

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please backup your registry (again) using ERUNT:
  • Double-click ERUNT.exe to start the program
  • OK all the prompts to back up your registry to the default location.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad into the box and press OK
Select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.
Then, copy/paste the contents of the following code box into Notepad:
@echo off
sc stop WZHNHPNP
sc delete WZHNHPNP
sc stop "ewido security suite driver"
sc delete "ewido security suite driver"
Select File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "runme.bat" (you MUST type the quotes)
Locate runme.bat on your Desktop and double-click it.
A black box should open and close after a short time, this is normal.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then, open Notepad (press Start->Run, enter notepad and press OK)
Copy everything inside the code box below (Starting with Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00) and paste it into a new notepad file.
Note: Please copy and paste all the text at once, and check that there is NO blank line above REGEDIT4 and one blank line at the bottom.
NOTE: I have attached this file as fix.txt - you can download it if you prefer

Change the Save As Type to All Files and save it as fix.reg to your Desktop.
Locate fix.reg on your Desktop, if you did it right it should look like this:Posted Image
Double-click it, when it asks if you want to merge with the registry, click Yes.
You can then delete fix.reg

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Right-click your Desktop and select Properties
Choose the Desktop tab and press the Customize Desktop... button
Choose the Web tab, under Web Pages: remove any entries present by highlighting them and pressing the Delete button
The default entry My Current Home Page can't be deleted but make sure the box is un-checked.
Press OK twice to save the changes.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then, make a new main.txt with DSS:
  • Make sure DSS.exe is on your Desktop
  • Press the Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:

    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config

  • A configuration box will appear, make sure all boxes are checked in the Main Log section, then un-check everything in the Extra Log section and press Scan!
Once complete, please post the new DSS main.txt report and let me know if you had any difficulties with the instructions.

Hi Silver,

I noticed the following things when I went through your instructions:

1) After I clicked Moveit! in the OTMovelt2 program, the program shut down after a few seconds, so I was not able to copy anything from the Result Window. The program did not ask me to reboot, and I cannot find any report file.

2) Under Desktop/Properties/Desktop/Customize Desktop, no extra entries were found (only the default "My Current Home Page"). However, I noticed that under Desktop/Properties/Desktop in the Background list, an web page entry named "def" is selected (which seems to be the blue wallpaper with the yellow spyware warning text). I have not done anything to this, so this wallpaper is still present as my desktop background.

/Lars

Hi laffenjoh,

I don't know what's wrong with OTMoveIt  we'll use a different method.
Please use the Desktop/Properties/Desktop to change your Desktop background back to your normal setting.

The upload didn't work as expected, please try this:
Close all programs
Please press Ctrl-Shift-Esc to bring up Task Manager, select the Processes tab, look down the list for PS21FD.EXE - highlight it, press End Process and say Yes to the prompt to terminate the process.
Next press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command (it's one long command) into the box and press OK:

cmd /c copy C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\PS21FD.EXE "%userprofile%\desktop\suspect.vir"

A file called suspect.vir should appear on your Desktop. Please upload it for analysis using the same page as previously:
http://www.bleepingc....php?channel=32

Copy/paste the following into the Browse to the file you want to submit field:

C:\Documents and Settings\Lars\desktop\suspect.vir

Then press Send File, this will upload the file for analysis

Once it has been uploaded you can delete suspect.vir
Now, reboot your computer
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Use Windows Explorer (right-click Start, select Explore) to find and delete the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\yuwfymmy.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\flutpggw.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\GjQAayay.ini2

If you have trouble finding or deleting any, please let me know in your next response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next, please do an online scan with Kaspersky:
Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer using this link:
http://www.kaspersky...kavwebscan.html
  • Click Accept and the web scanner will begin to load
  • If a yellow warning bar appears at the top of the browser, click it and choose Install ActiveX Control
  • You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Install
  • If you are prompted about another ActiveX control called Kaspersky Online Scanner GUI part then allow it to be installed also.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on Next and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save Report As... button, change Save as type: to Text file and save the file to your desktop as Kaspersky.txt
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.

Hi Silver,

I was not able to find PS21FD.EXE among the running processes, so I did not upload anything this time. However, I noticed a suspicious process running (PJ4BDA.EXE) which I guess might be a clone? Looking back at the old logs, it seems to appear under different namnes...

Btw, I also noticed some suspicious files under C:\Documents and Settings\Lars:
Desktopblackbird.jpg
DesktopEditorFKWP1.5.exe
DesktopEditorFKWP2.0.exe
Desktopfkwp1.5.exe
Desktopfkwp2.0.exe
DesktopTrojan.Win32.BlackBird.exe
All these files were created 03.04.2008 - about the same time as all these problems started

I did all the other things you instructed me to perform in your last post, and here are the HJT and Kaspersky reports:

Hi laffenjoh,

Please delete those suspicious files you found, they are all bad.

I noticed a suspicious process running (PJ4BDA.EXE) which I guess might be a clone? Looking back at the old logs, it seems to appear under different namnes...

Yes this is correct, I would like to get a sample uploaded for checking. Please try this procedure to upload it:

Please close all programs before continuing.
Press Ctrl-Shift-Esc to bring up Task Manager, select the Processes tab, look down the list for PS21FD.EXE (or similar) - highlight it, press End Process and say Yes to the prompt to terminate the process.
Then open this page in your browser:
http://www.bleepingc....php?channel=32
Press the Browse button and locate the process you just stopped, it will be located in this folder:

C:\Windows\Temp

Then press OK and Send File, this will upload the file for analysis
If there are other, similarly named files in that directory then please upload two or three of them also.
Now reboot your computer.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad into the box and press OK
Select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.
Then, copy/paste the contents of the following code box into Notepad:
@echo off
attrib -r -s -h C:\WINDOWS\Web\def.htm >> results2.txt 2>>&1
del /q /a /f C:\WINDOWS\Web\def.htm >> results2.txt 2>>&1
dir /a C:\WINDOWS\Web\def.htm >> results2.txt 2>>&1
attrib -r -s -h "C:\Documents and Settings\Lars\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\HIHVIY55\zrt20080408[1]" >> results2.txt 2>>&1
del /q /a /f "C:\Documents and Settings\Lars\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\HIHVIY55\zrt20080408[1]" >> results2.txt 2>>&1
dir /a "C:\Documents and Settings\Lars\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\HIHVIY55\zrt20080408[1]" >> results2.txt 2>>&1
dir /a C:\windows\temp >> results2.txt 2>>&1
Select File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "runme2.bat" (you MUST type the quotes)
Locate runme2.bat on your Desktop and double-click it.
A black box should open and close after a short time, this is normal.
A file named results2.txt will appear on your Desktop, please post the contents in your next response

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Clean with MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
  • Please download the Installer to your Desktop from here:
    http://www.besttechi.../mbam-setup.exe
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to both of these options:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When finished, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to your Desktop, and post the contents in your reply.
  • The log can also be found here if you need it:
    • Start->All Programs->Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware->Logs

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the results2.txt output, the MalwareBytes Antimalware log and a new HijackThis log.

Hi Silver,

I have now deleted the files I mentioned in my last post.

However, I am not able to upload the suspicious .exe file in C:\Windows\Temp - at the same moment I stop the process in the Task Manager, the file disappears from C:\Windows\Temp. After reboot, the .exe file is showing up again, but with a different name (shows up with a small dog icon in C:\Windows\Temp). After cleaning with MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware, I was asked to reboot my computer in order to get everthing removed. However, it does not seem to have removed the source of the suscpicious .exe file in C:\Windows\Temp as you can see in the HJT log.

/Lars

Hi again Silver,

I found something interesting that might explain the the mysterious .exe file in the Windows/temp directory - it seems to be a Trend Micro OfficeScan process file!
Take a look at this thread:

http://www.bleepingc...hp/t136519.html

It is exactly the same dog icon I find in my Windows/temp directory, and when I check the properties of the file it is described as an OfcDog Application by Trend Micro Incorporat

Hi laffenjoh,

Your information looks good, I would have been very surprised if that program was malware, but randomly named programs are suspicious and must be checked out. The Properties information from the file itself confirms what you found, so that was very good research - I think you would do very well as a malware fighter yourself - perhaps you should consider joining the Classroom here at WTT and learning to help others :)

Just a few final steps now:
Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, look down the list for these items and remove them:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_01
JavaT 6 Update 2
JavaT 6 Update 3
JavaT SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

These are out of date and now a security risk, you can get the latest update (version 6 update 5) from here

You have ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker installed on your system. This program incorporates the Ask Toolbar which is not malware, but it may report on your surfing behavior and is considered undesirable, see here and here for more information. If you actually use this program, consider a safe alternative such as Google Toolbar.
I recommend you remove this program via Add/Remove Programs

You can also uninstall Kaspersky Online Scanner and MalwareBytes Antimalware via Add/Remove Programs, but I recommend you keep these programs because they are very effective, they can be used alongside your existing software, and they're free.

Re-hide hidden/system files and folders:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Do not show hidden files and folders
CHECK the Hide extensions for known file types option
CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Press OK

Download OTCleanIt to your Desktop
Double-click it to run the program, and press the CleanUp! button.
When prompted, allow your computer to be rebooted.

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Once complete, please let me know if you had any problems with the instructions and tell me how your computer is running now.

Hi Silver, Everything is working fine now! :) :) :) I am really grateful for all your kind help and patience - thanks a lot!!! I will keep Kaspersky Online Scanner and MalwareBytes Antimalware as you suggested. Are you running these programs on a regular basis or just when you suspect that your computer is infected? A couple of more qustions: Can I delete all desktop programs and files that we have used during these malware removal sessions (Erunt, undll, etc)? Do you recommend any specific program for deleting temporarely internet files etc to free up disk space? The past 2 years I have been using System Security Suite 1.04 on a regularely basis for this purpose, but I you recommend something else I would be grateful to know! Best regards /Lars

You're most welcome laffenjoh and I'm very glad your machine is running better now :woot:

Regarding MalwareBytes Antimalware and Kaspersky, I recommend you scan with both of them regularly (perhaps weekly) to see if there is anything on your system which got past your Trend antivirus program - a bit like a 2nd opinion. Malware doesn't always have symptoms so I recommend you scan regardless of how your system is running.

To clean temp files you can use the built-in cleanmgr as follows:

Click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Another good program for this purpose is ATF Cleaner - you can download it and read the instructions for use on the developer's website:
http://www.atribune....c...5&Itemid=25

These are both designed to be easy ways to clear disk space, however they are not privacy oriented like System Security Suite.

Yes you can delete any logs you have saved as well as UnDLL, Erunt and any remaining tools from your Desktop.
Here are some tips to help you keep your computer clean:

You have good protection software installed however please ensure it is kept up to date. Check that your antivirus and antispyware programs are set to automatically update themselves, and that your firewall is the latest version.

I recommend you install a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.
Also: subscribe to the mailing list to get update notifications.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins or ActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

Find out more about how to prevent infection in the future

Please post back to let me know that you have read this, and if there are any further issues.
