Hello Hank,

It looks like Combofix got it this time, I think the problem was that you did not run Combofix properly the first time, it needs to be run from the desktop , which you did but did not the first time you ran it. Just a few files to remove.

Please download OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\pnc.exe
    C:\1i.com
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\tavo0.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmp.reg

  • Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything on the Results window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it on your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Post the OTMoveIt log and let me know how your system is running now??

Looks good Hank

You need to update your Java.

  • Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
  • Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
  • It should have an icon next to it:
    Posted Image
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Reboot your system.
  • Then go to the Sun Microsystems and install the update
  • Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 5 <--This is what you need to download and install.
  • If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
  • If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
  • Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

Take Care,

Ken :)

Hi Ken,
Just as I thought I finally got rid of kavo and tavo, they popped up again.
This time it happened whilst I was visiting a free e-mail service www.mail.com when StartupXpert warned me that kava and tava were added to my startup list. I do not suggest that it was because of www.mail.com but that it happened whilst I was reading my e-mail there. I have not visited any other websites in the meantime.
I used Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to scan my PC, and found seven viruses/trojans! They were subesequently deleted and the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log is posted below.
Could this explain the reappearance of tavo and kavo or are they still hidden in my PC somewhere? Just for in case I also perfomed a HijackThis scan and paste it below.
Regards

Hello Hank,

There may be a hidden file putting them back. Lets run these quick scans.

Download RootAlyzer to your desktop.
  • Unzip it to a folder on your desktop, close all windows, and run RootAlyzer.exe
  • Click Ok to the two prompts and let the program run it's Quick Scan automatically, this should only take a few seconds
  • Click the Deep Scan tab, check all the boxes and click Ok. Let the scan run un-interrupted, it will take a few minutes.
  • When it is finished scanning, a Log tab will appear at the top, click that. Highlight all the text, right-click on it and press Copy.
  • Paste that information back here by pressing Ctrl + V, or right-click and press Paste. Also mention if you had any problems.

BlackLight Rootkit Detection and Elimination Tool <-- Bottom of page

Download and Save the Trial of Blacklight to your desktop.
  • Download the Blacklight Beta graphical user interface version
  • Double-click blbeta.exe
  • Then accept the agreement
  • Click > scan then > next
  • You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).
  • Copy and paste this log in your next reply.
  • Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"

Post both logs please

Hi Ken,
Thanks again. I downloaded and ran both RootAlyzer.exe and Blacklight Rootkit Eliminator.
As far as the latter is concerned: they no longer have the Beta version in their website; I therefore downloaded the Blacklight Rootkit Eliminator fsbl.exe program and ran it - hope it is what you meant.

RootAlyzer found nothing and returned empty logs for both the Quick Scan and the Deep Scan actions.
BlackLight also found nothing - I paste the log below.
I am puzzled. No, I have not experienced any problems since my previous report to you.
Regards
Hank

Good Morning Hank,

What I would do is open StartupXpert and remove those entries from the startup. I am not seeing it anyware in any of the scans or on your HJT log. This may be overkill but lets run them through OTMoveIt one more time.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\kavo0.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\kavo1.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\tavo0.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\kavo.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\tavo.exe

  • Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything on the Results window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it on your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

  • Open HJT
  • Then open the Misc Tools section
  • click on Generate a Startup List Log,
  • Post the log into this thread

Post the OTMoveIt log and the Startup list log

Hi Ken,
OTMoveIt did not find any of the files to move. The log is posted below.
I am also posting the HJT Startup List log.
I have since deleted StartupXpert although one of it's components apparently is still active since it warns me of any files uploaded to the stratup list. How do I get rid of it?
Regards
Hank

Hank,

Those bad files are gone and not on your system any longer. It may just have been a registry key that prompted the startup. If you uninstalled StartupXpert via the Add Remove Programs than look in C:\Program Files and if the folder is still present than delete it.

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

    • Posted Image

  • When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

The above procedure will:
  • Delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Reset System Restore.

I believe your ok but will leave this thread open for you in case you have to post back.

Ken :)

Hi Ken, Windows reported: "Windows cannot find 'Combofix'" and the disclaimer did not even appear. I searched for files called Combofix and found two .txt logs which I deleted. Many thanks. Hank
