Hi, i recently changed from macafee a virus/ firewall to avg free and zone alarm firwall, and have since had a problem with my internet explorer browser.
Wehn opening I.E. i notice that all of my toolbars are missing and also the, menu bar is missing. I am also getting bombarded with annoying popups (i have not had popups of any kind for a long time, so i'm sure that something is wrong, thanks in advance for your assistance!

Welcome to the Whatthetech Malware Removal Forum Sorry for the delay, not enough hours in the day to work all the logs that are posted.

Your HJT program is outdated, drag it to the trash and download and install the latest version by Trendmicro.

Download Trendmicros Hijackthis to your desktop.
Double click it to install
Follow the prompts and by default it will install in C:\Program Files\Trendmicro\Hijackthis\Highjackthis.exe

• Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
• Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
• Go to Edit> Select All.....Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread by using the Post Reply and not start a New Thread.

DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.


Go to your Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel and remove this ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker <-- just this, not the ZoneAlarm firewall.


Run this free online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

• The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  
• Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  
• Now click on Scan Settings
  
• In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  
• Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  
• Standard
  
• Scan Options:
  
• Scan Archives
  
• Scan Mail Bases
  
• Click OK
  
• Now under select a target to scan: Select My Computer
  
• This will program will start and scan your system.
  
• The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  
• Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  
• Now click on the Save as Text button:
  
• Save the file to your desktop.

Post the log along with a New HJT Log into your next reply.

Hi ken, and thanks for the reply, i have some more information about how my machine has been behaving since my first post.

I ran windows defender and found a Trojan Win.32/messengerskinner. i removed this, and then thought i would be ok but instead, lost the use of internet explorer for around 15 - 20 mins (I kept getting" Cannot display web page" On all sites i tried) the internet connection was fine because my online poker app worked during this time. Once it all started working properly again, i visited one of my usual networking sites and was told that i had javascript disabled (I have no idea how to do this)

I also manage my startup via a programme called tune up utilities 2004, and there is an entry that i keep un checking and it keeps getting reinstated by it's self.
I googled it and found not one hit about this application named pkeoidm.exe.

Other than that, i'm still bombarded by popups, and changes like my I E home page have been made (Not by me)

I'm not sure if any of this is significant, but this is as much info as i can give you about the behaviour of my pc.

Still nothing earth shattering on your log. What are the popups about ? Where are they taking you? What homepage is set that cant be reset back?

Run this program, it will only take 20 min or so.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

• Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  
• Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  
• The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  
• Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  
• When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  
• The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  
• Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a Hijackthis log.

The pop ups arrive on every few pages viewed, and usually are applicable to the site i'm on at the time (Example: when on this site, i get anti spyware pop ups)
I clicked one named 'spyware secure' and got a prompt to install this program. Other pop ups include winning ps3's to dating and ringtones for moblie phones.
They appear on a full screen page which has none of the charactheristics of my usual browser page (ie, toolbars, favorites,address bar, menu bar and only has the very top bar which has the I E icon with the name of the page.

You didn't have Malwarebytes remove that entry per my instructions. This infection may be a rootkit, lets do this.

Click here to download AVG Anti Rootkit and save it to your desktop.

• Double-click on the AVG_AntiRootkit_1.1.0.42.exe file to run it.
• Click "I Agree" to agree to the EULA.
• By default it will install to "G:\Program Files\GRISOFT\AVG Anti-Rootkit Free".
• Click "Next" to begin the installation then click "Install".
• It will then ask you to reboot now to finish the installation.
• Click "Finish" and your computer will reboot.
• After it reboots, double-click on the AVG Anti-Rootkit Free shortcut that is now on your desktop.
• Click on the "Perform in-depth search" button to begin the scan.
• The scan will take a while so be patient and let it complete.
• When the scan is finished, click the "Save result to file" button.
• Save the scan results to your desktop then come back here to copy and paste the results in your next reply to this thread.

Hello ken, i have performed this scan twice and have found six entries, but i have been given no option to "save result to file" The entries relate to the pkeoidm.exe program that i mentioned earlier though....Was i supposed to remove the selected items first?? If i right click 'save results' i get save file name *csv---->save as type---->comma serperated value(*.csv) and i click but it does nothing

Good Morning, Try removing the items first and then save file, there should be an option to save it as a text file in notepad. After you remove those entires, reboot and see if the pop ups are gone.

Hello Dom,

Not to worry about the replies, we all get busy at times.

I am sure these are bad but lets make sure. Most likely when you removed those entires with AVG Anti Rootkit it removed the bad files, these just may be leftovers.

Go to VirusTotal and submit this file for analysis, just use the browse feature and then Send File, you will get a report back, post the report into this thread for me to see.
