I couldn't find what I needed , so I am here to ask for help. My son has a DELL Inspiron Laptop with Windows XP Home. I had to go over to his home and check out what was happening (pop ups galore, runs slow) and it appears there is a permanent display on his deskyop indicating he has spyware detected, blah, blah, blah...a balloon pops up and he said he clicked on it. It's the Spymaxx software download. His antivirus program is Avast Home, which has worked great for me, and his laptop as well, until this occured. I did a system scan and isolated a few items; enabled pop-up blocker (which was off); and, did a complete utility check before I researched, and downloaded , Spybot Search & Destroy. It found quite a bit, including the smitfraud, spymaxx, and many others, but it also didn't "fix" everything totally. The Spymaxx is not budging. The PC shop I have used for my own desktop was going to use Kaspersky software to scan and remove the spyware/virus. I chose to shop online, and I want to purchase the software myself so we can continue to protect against other problems. I have found the Kaspersky on Amazon for about $20 less. I also ran across an article about the Spymaxx spyware, or virus (whatever the heck it is!?), and this guy claims SpyZooka (by Blue Penguin Software) is best for this, specifically for 100% removal, user-friendliness, etc. I am so cinfused now, and checked PC World, ZDNet, etc. to find out about these claims, but I have been unsuccessful in finding out what I need to know. It's so overwhelming, and my son needs his laptop for school. PLEASE..I need advice and fast! I am NOT a tech-head, so keep that in mind, too. LOL

Mom on the verge of Madness :pullhair:

Edit! I need to restate that this is more of a spyware/virus removal issue...and I see that many have similar inquiries now.

Can you post a HiJackThis scan of the system, MrC

-----------------------------------

You can get a complete installer that installs HijackThis to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis, makes an entry in the start menu and also providing a desktop shortcut from HERE

Double click on it to open it up, hit the Do a system scan and save log button, WordPad or NotePad will open and it will be saved in the folder, copy and paste the entire log into your post.

Yahh! Sounds intimidating, lol. Since my son doesn't live with me, I will have to do all this at my ex's house...that's always fun. I believe they are heading over the Best Buy to pick up the Kaspersky AV software today. Should I hold off on the install until I can get this other thing going??? Ok, so I have to install that HijackThis program? Is that a link, or do I have to get it off the Internet? I have things I have to do today, but I will do this as soon as I can get over there. Tomorrow at the latest. Is there a "step by step" for me...I would be PO if I messed up his $2000 laptop, which I paid for. Ouch! Can you feel my pain? Give me time, and I really appreciate the quick response! Michelle

You don't have to buy anything...all the programs we use are free as well as the help.

The link is a direct download of the program HiJackThis, just follow the instructions it's easy to do.

ok, here is scan. I didn't analyze it...just copied and pasted the logfile. I am not able to do much unless I can make it over here to log-in. My ex is buying Kaspersky AV tomorrow, and my son may install it if he feels like he understands how. Also, how should I set those spybot settings for now? I have it on advanced, but do not understand the teatimer thing. I'll check back tomorrow evening. Thanks.

Can you tell me if you recognize this program:
C:\Program Files\Repair And Block

------------------

Please leave TeaTimer and SDHelper disabled for now...they will interfere with the fix.

--------------------

Enable hidden files:
Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.
Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK" (reverse this procedure when we are done)

------------------

Go to your control panels add/remove programs and uninstall these if listed:
QdrDrive
QdrModule
Bat

------------------

Run HiJackThis and
Close down ALL open windows, leaving ONLY HijackThis running - Click Scan and.....
Place a check against the following items if found:

Hi Mr. C. I happened to be walk past the PC and saw your e-mail reply. I am not sure what "repair and block" is. What are you guessing? I did quickly read over the list of things to do. Oh boy...I am very unsure of myself all of a sudden, but I will have to do all this after work tomorrow. I am not that good with technical issues, and I have never started in safe mode. Guess it's time to learn! Should I tell my son NOT to install Kasperky before I get a chance to do all of this? As for Spybot, how do I get teatimer disabled? Should I go to the help menu and look for directions?

Here's how:
Please disable TeaTimer and SDHelper by opening Spybot SD, click Mode>Advanced>and on the left menu choose Tools and then Resident. In the right hand pane you will see a check box for TeaTimer and for SDHelper . Please uncheck both boxes and then close Spybot. You can reinstate it later but we don't want it interfering with what we need to do. Reboot when done

------------------

Ask your son what Repair and Block is.

----------------

Don't install any new software just yet.

Neither of us know what it is, but my daughter is checking Download.com. She DL a couple of spyware prorams to try to fix things, but she said she thought they were uninstalled completely. You can check there, or wait until I hear back from her. She was unaware that I had begun to work on this issue with him at the time. Thanks again...

Yes, she said it was something she downloaded from Download.com to use. That's all I know.

Please don't use it.

I won't. I wasn't aware of it. What should I do with it?
