Hi TidewaterJoe and welcome to the forums.

My name is Dave. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can sometimes take a while to research so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

First, can you please turn off Word Wrap in Notepad before you copy and paste any logs in. This is to make them easier to read once they are posted.

Please download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Double click on SDFix.exe. It should automatically extract a folder called SDFix to your system drive (usually C:\). Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the SDFix folder and double click on RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y and press Enter to begin the script.
  • It will start cleaning your PC and then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any key to restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer than normal to restart as the fixtool will be removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished.
  • Press any key to end the script and to load your desktop icons.
  • A text file should automatically open, so please copy the contents and post them here. We also need you to post a new HijackThis log

Dave: Your assistance is greatly appreciated! Per your instruction, I am attaching copies of the SDFix report and a subsequent HijackThis log. I note that the persistent problem files have been deleted from a number of locations, and that an annoying R0 entry in the registry has also finally been deleted permanently, so I have hope that my problems are solved. In any event, please advise at your earliest convenience. FYI, during the restart initiated by SDFix, McAfee discovered a Trojan in SDFix/backup.exe. At the prompt to remove it, I did, of course, but thought it would be wise to bring this to your attention: your instructions were excellent but do not take this possibility into account, and some users might not know how to answer when confronted with the option. Again, thank you for the help. I look forward to your response. Take care, Joe

Hi Joe,

Looking better. No need to attach the logs, just copy and paste the text from Notepad into the comment window, with first making sure Word Wrap is off.

during the restart initiated by SDFix, McAfee discovered a Trojan in SDFix/backup.exe.

That is SDFix quarantine area, and I wouldn't worry about it. Too bad McAfee didn't pick it up and take care of it before SDFix had to be brought in... :blush:

Let's continue with the fix and do some cleanup and scans.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner
You need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner and click Accept
You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Please also post a new HijackThis log and let me know how it's running.
Posted the last few things under the original, Dave, and thought you might not get a bump that way.
Hi,
Not bad, think we are pretty much there.
You can delete the SDFix folder:
C:\SDFix
Also, using Windows Explorer delete the following file:
C:\Documents and Settings\Corrine\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\WUHDY2DC\urmovs_com[1].htm
Let me know how you make out with that and how it's running now.
The help you receive here is free, but if you would like to help me continue the fight against Malware then Posted Image
Dave: That file was not found. In addition, the Corrine/Local Settings directory did not contain a subdirectory Temporary Internet Files, although some of the other usernames did have such a directory. Regardless, a search of the C: drive showed no results for urmov or a file using the complete name (copied and pasted from your last). Take care, Joe
Okay no problem. Well, if all is running well then just some final advice here.
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which may be infected anyway).
Click Start>Help and Support>Undo changes to your computer with System Restore
Select Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create
Click Start>Run and type Cleanmgr
Click the More Options Tab.
Click Clean Up in the System Restore section.
In addition to updating and using what you currently have you may want to consider the following:
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly or set your computer to receive automatic updates. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Spybot: Search And Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers
Install Ad-Aware - Ad-Aware SE You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer
Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware
Install SpywareGuard - SpywareGuard provides a real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareGuard to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware
Use Zoned Out -
Zoned Out will block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. Instructions for set up and use can be found at the website.
Update all of your Anti-Malware programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed and the ones you are currently running regularly. Without regular updates you Will Not be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Thank you for your time and effort, Dave. FYI, I had gone into the hospital at the end of January to have a virus removed (cancer) and picked up some malware while in the hospital (MSSA, a cousin of MRSA). Came home finally at end of February to find my computer was pretty much toast (I have a teenaged son). Since I use it a lot to communicate with cancer survivors, particularly new ones when I can, I was pretty bummed out. Did a lot of things on my own that didn't help. Just wanted you to know that your efforts might impact in a way that you may not have realized. Again, they are much appreciated. Take care.
Wow glad I could help out here Joe, your words are kind. My older sister is also a cancer survivor. I'm sure you have been through a lot and I wish you the best going forward. All the best, Dave
