I suppose I can be classed as an older person / PC user. I have been using Windows since 1993. I have only recently been hooked up to Broadband having previously been connected via dial-up connection. My Laptop has been infected with malware in the past few weeks. I have tried all I know to get rid of the malware but to no avail. I now need help as the pop-ups are still happening. More importantly I do not know if there is more serious stuff infecting my computer. I do hope someone can help. Thank you in advance. sjserius

If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear. So lets do this to the end!

• Save and quit any work your doing before beginning the fix.
• All hijackthis logs I ask for should be done in normal mode ( not safe mode)
• These logs should be done last after you have followed my instructions in the previous post.

Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

DISABLE TEA TIMER

Please disable SpybotSD TeaTimer, as it may hinder the removal of the infection. You can enable it after you're clean.
To disable SpybotSD TeaTimer:
Open Spybot and click on Mode and check Advanced Mode
Check yes to next window.
Click on Tools in bottom left hand corner.
Click on System Startup icon.
Uncheck Teatimer box.
Click Allow Change box.

Run hijackthis and choose scan only and place a check by the following lines if present.
Close all other windows and browsers except HJT before clicking on Fix Checked

Open Notepad, copy and paste the following text (in bold) into the new Notepad window.

sc stop MyDNS

sc delete MyDNS

Save it to your Desktop, as type "all files", as fixservice.bat


It should now look like this icon now.

Now double click this file, won't see much happen.
A quick flash is about all.
Then you may delete the file we just made.

Please reboot to safe mode:
After the very first black screen start tapping the
F8 key untill prompted with a list.... choose safe
mode.

Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files::

Click Start. My Computer.
Select the Tools menu Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

NOTE: There are legitimate files named exactly what we are about to delete. DO NOT delete any others unless I ask you to.

Search for and remove
Now I want you to search for and delete the following file if present. If you need help finding them.
Click start /search/ all files and folders/ look for More advanced options. once in there select the first 3 boxes.
Please just remove the files/folders I listed in BOLD

Reboot Normally.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

• Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
• At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
• When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please post the contents of that log.
  
  If you accidently close it you may find it here.
  Start -> All Programs -> Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware -> Logs

I have followed the instructions you have given earlier. Just one query though - which I think is a typo -

You asked me to let you know if I was able to delete those 2 files - There was only one listed which I successfully deleted - C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\svchost.exe I have rebooted and so far have not seen any recurrence of Malware.

Many thanks for your help and your detailed instructions which I found easy to follow.

Yes you were correct about there being only 1 file to remove TyPo!


Make sure Tea Timer is still disabled

DISABLE TEA TIMER

Please disable SpybotSD TeaTimer, as it may hinder the removal of the infection. You can enable it after you're clean.
To disable SpybotSD TeaTimer:
Open Spybot and click on Mode and check Advanced Mode
Check yes to next window.
Click on Tools in bottom left hand corner.
Click on System Startup icon.
Uncheck Teatimer box.
Click Allow Change box.

If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for Cookies is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.

• Set Cookie Retention.

• Reset Temp File Removal for Regular Use.

  Check "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours".

You need to update SunJava for security reasons.
Updating Java:
Download the latest version of
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update5

• Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5
  ... allows end-users to run Java applications".
  
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
• Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  
• Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
• Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. It should have the icon next to it.
• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  
• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
• Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u5-windows-i586-p.exe
  to install the newest version.

Hello again

I have deleted the RegistryCleanFixer2008.exe and emptied the other two files as you advised. However I have fallen at the last hurdle in attempting to update Java.

I deleted the (JRE and/or J2SE) files. I then downloaded the (JRE) 6 Update 5 to my desktop and installed it. However I don't know where it has installed to. It does not show up in the Add or Remove programs file or in C:\Program Files\Java. Some new icons have appeared on my desktop with the following labels -

jre-6u5-windows-i586-p.exe.bak
jre-6u5-windows-i586-p.exe - (when I double click this one I get a message saying it is not a valid Windows 32 application.)

Sorry to be a nuisance at this point.

To be honest with you I'm not sure what has happenend either.
But! I do see that the new Java is installed and running just fine by the looks of your logs.
What counts to me. Is your running the latest and greatest and your well protected.
Windows glitches. Keeps thing s interesting don't they ?

Great news !

Your logs now appears to be clean.

Lets do a few things to tidy up.
Please do these in the order I suggest!


You may delete these 2 files form the desktop now.

If we have set your computer to see all files and folders we must reprotect them.

UNDO SHOW ALL FILES
click on the My Computer icon.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
After the new window appears select the View tab.
Deselect in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
Deselect the checkbox labeled Show hidden files and folders.
Select the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
Replace the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
Press the Apply button and then the OK .
Now many important files are safe.

You should keep CCleaner and run that weekly or monthly depending on your computer usage.

Please create a 'clean' System Restore Point:
The reason for doing this is in case you need system restore you don't put back all we just took out.
Right click My Computer
Then Propeties then system restore
Place a check mark by turn off system restore
Click APPLY
Windows will give you a warning click yes
REBOOT

Now go right back to the same place and unchecksystem restore
Click APPLYand OK

Download and Install a HOSTS File

Make your Internet Explorer more secure
1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
2. Click on the Security tab
3. Click the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
4. Click on Default Level and click Ok
5. Click on the Custom Level button.

Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt

When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

6. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.


Here's a site with great advise on how to AVOID malware. Much easier to do than removing it.

Very seldom does that darn Java auto update ever work. I turn mine off.
It's best if you every couple of month just visit the site to see if there is a newer version that yours.
