Possible Root Kit infection

Whatever infected me somehow took out my Sygate Firewall, once I downloaded it again I was running better. How can something take out an entire program? To me that sounds more like someone. I started to have serious issues many weeks ago.

Basically, my browser (both IE and Firefox) would crash constantly. Sometimes when I clicked on a media file, other times I don't know why. My PC runs well now but I think it could be a lot faster, I know there is a lot of garbage on it and I wonder if there are things running in the back I don't realize or things hijacking it. It takes a long time to start, so maybe you could help me identify what doesn't need to occur at start up and which of these things are residue from previous infections.

That Panda program tells me I have root kit infections but doesn't say what without buying it and does not offer a free fix.

I also get daily port scans what is all that about?

As soon as I reinstalled Sygate things were OK. But before that, nothing worked and I was restarting my PC about once every twenty minutes of use. Curiously, using the open new tab option in Firefox worked fine, but if I didn't start the browser up right at start up, often the browser wouldn't work at all.

So since Sygate is a firewall is it stopping something in / out communicating with something else in / out that was causing this? Is that thing still on my PC?

When Sygate asks me to give permission to outside sources trying to access my PC what are these things? I just say no, but I said yes to see if I would have the same problems and I did not. But still, are those things generally benign or not? It is strange when it tells me that the programs are trying to send messages to outside sources or when I search for something using "explore" and it tries to send a message to the internet. I always say no.

I have a torrent progam installed in my PC but I rarely use it.
