Hi,

My PC has been clean for a long time and has F-Secure real time spyware/malware and virus scanning software offered by my ISP Optusnet. All Windows updates are current. For some reason I've been hit with some spyware/malware which slows the PC and often completely freezes it. Also, often produces pop ups offering free downloads or free PC scanning and fixes for viruses and spyware etc and opens web pages advertising something or other. To try and correct it I disabled system restore and did a complete system and C:/ scan. F-secure said it found and corrected a couple of items but didn't actually fix my problem.

Anyway, hope youcan help. Here is the HJT log;

Hello Don Ricci and welcome back to the What the Tech Forums

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your problem.

Please provide a list of uninstallable programs.

To Provide a List of Installed Programs
  • Run HijackThis.
  • Click Config>>Miscellaneous Tools>>Open Uninstall Manager>>Save List
  • Save list to Desktop
  • Copy the Notepad list and Paste it into this thread.
Hi Trevuren, thank you for your help. Unfortunately when I click the save button HJT closes down and a search of my system cannot locate any related file. Strange?
Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your desktop.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, a text file will open - Main.txt
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of Main.txt in your thread in the HijackThis Log Help Forum.
  • An additional text file, Extra.txt, will also be available (by default) in the following FOLDER, C:\Deckard\System Scanner.
  • Please go to that FOLDER and also copy the contents of Extra.txt to your post as well.
Note: some firewalls may warn that sigcheck.exe is trying to access the internet - please ensure that you allow sigcheck.exe permission to do so.

What DSS will do:

  • Create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  • Clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • Check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have it installed.

Post Logs:
  • DSS Scan Results: contents of 1) Main.txt and 2) Extra.txt
Here are the requested logs…

DSS Scan results:

Main.txt

R0 FSFW (F-Secure Firewall Driver) - c:\windows\system32\drivers\fsdfw.sys
A. You have what appears to be remnants of a Symantec service on your machine as well as F-secure. They can not co-exist without causing major problems. Check your Add/Remove program module in your Control Panel. If you see anything with Symantec on it, please UNINSTALL of it.

B.First we must disable some of your security programs so that they do not interfere with the running of our tools:

NORTON ANTIVIRUS
Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for a [external image: Posted Image] sign.
  • right-click it -> chose "Disable Auto-Protect."
  • select a duration of 5 hours (this assures no interference with the cleanup of your pc)
  • click "Ok."
  • a popup will warn that protection will now be disabled and the sign will now look like this: [external image: Posted Image]
You succesfully disabled the Norton Antivirus Guard.

F-SECURE ANTIVIRUS
Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for a blue [external image: Posted Image] sign.
  • right click it-> select Unload.
  • The F-Secure sign should now be surrounded by a red striked through circle (looking like this: [external image: Posted Image] )
You succesfully disabled the F-Secure Guard.

C. Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE directly to your Desktop.

Note: If you already have ComboFix on your machine, please DELETE it from your desktop before downloading the newest version.

Go to [external image: Posted Image] -> Run -> copy/paste the following single line command in the runbox & click OK

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

[external image: Posted Image]
  • ComboFix will automatically start. Any monitoring programs will be shut down like your antivirus, antispyware programs for example.
  • ComboFix may restart your computer, this is normal.
  • When finished, it will produce a log, ComboFix.txt.
  • Please post ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
ComboFix program scan carried out as instructed. One thing to let you know was that during the ComboFix scanning my PC produced a number of pop up dialog boxes titled 16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem with a message of The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction follwed by a series of numbers. My options were to close or terminate the application. I chose close each time and ComboFix carried on. This also happened after reboot whilst ComboFix was finishing up. This might be significant for you to know whilst reading the log below.

A. You have what appears to be remnants of a Symantec service on your machine as well as F-secure. They can not co-exist without causing major problems. Check your Add/Remove program module in your Control Panel. If you see anything with Symantec on it, please UNINSTALL of it

As I see that it is still in your HijackThis log, I must assume that you either decided to retain it or you could not remove it. Could you please tell me if these are remnants of an old installation. I need to know so I can safely remove them to avoid any conflicts with your F-Security Suite.

Missing .DLL file(s) has/have disrupted the LSP chain on your computer. This can be seen by the (010) entry(ies) in your HJT log. We must fix this problem as a priority.

1. Backup the registry by going to Start>Run> and type ‘regedit’ without the quotes. Then on the file menu choose ‘export’ in XP.

2. Download the LSPfix.txt and read the readme file.

3. Download LSPfix.zip or LSPfix.exe

4. Close all windows except LSPfix

5. Launch LSPfix.zip and install to its own folder, then click on LSPfix.exe. Or click on LSPfix.exe and it will launch the program.

6. Put a check mark in the box “I know what I am doing”

7. Click ‘Finish’

7. REBOOT to complete the task.

8. Now RUN HJT, click Scan and POST a new log file in this thread using “Add Reply”.
Any remnants of Symantec products left on my machine are there because I could not remove them. I can't see any folders or listings in add/remove programs. Norton products are part of the software package this machine was shipped with but I chose not to renew subscriptions to it once the trial period expired so please feel free to advise on how to remove anything I need to.

I've followed the LSPfix instructions and here is the latest HJT log;

 Thank you for your ongoing help!
A 1. Go to Start->Run and type in notepad and hit OK.

2. Then copy and paste the content of the following codebox into Notepad:

@Echo off
sc stop "Symantec Core LC"
sc delete "Symantec Core LC"
del delete.bat

3. Save the file as "delete.bat". Make sure to save it with the quotes. It should look like this on your desktop: [external image: Posted Image]

4. Double click delete.bat.

B. 1. First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

  • Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
  • Choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
  • Uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
  • Close the window with ok

2. Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

3. Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NDSTray.exe] NDSTray.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TFncKy] TFncKy.exe
O20 - Winlogon Notify: urqrqrp - urqrqrp.dll (file missing)

4. Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

5. Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
  • Press Enter.

6. Using Windows Explorer, locate the following folder, and DELETEit (if still present):

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared<==Folder and all its content

7. Exit Explorer, and Return to HijackThis

C. Using Internet Explorer, please do a Kaspersky Online Scan

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure as follows:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will provide a report if your system is infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.

    [external image: Posted Image]

  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop and post it in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
Instructions carried out as requested except that I was not able to connect to the internet in safe mode to do the kaspersky scan so it was done in normal mode. The scan did find infections. Here is the report as well as a new HJT scan.

A. Using Windows Explorer (Windows Key + E), please locate the following folders and DELETE them along with their entire content. If deletion is not possible in Normal Windows Mode, please perform the deletions in Safe Mode.

C:\Program Files\A8GSdsApp<==Folder
C:\Program Files\Zango<== Folder

B. After these folders have been deleted, please tell me how your system is running. If all is OK, we can perform the final cleanup procedures.

Trevuren
I have deleted the Zango folder. I didn't delete the A8GSdsApp folder as it contains the Golden Eye key logger which I deliberately installed for monitoring purposes. I switch it on and off as I choose. I'll operate the computer now for a few hours and report on it's performance, which if I may add now, is more sluggish than it should be.
Well all seems well. I've let the kids loose on it over the last few hours with no problems to report I'm happy to say. My son downloaded and installed the Safari web browser which seems quite snappy in opening web pages compared to IE7. The only real issue I have is the time taken for Outlook Express to open. I've deleted old mail and compacted the databases with no improvement. What I'm really annoyed about is being infected in the first place with a real time virus and malware scanner running. I would've thought it shouldn't happen so I'm happy to hear about any stronger available precautions I can take. If you have any suggestions for overall system improvement I'll be glad to hear them too. Rgds, Don
Congratulations, your logs look CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you system is completely clean:

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

  • [external image: Posted Image]

The above procedure will:
  • Delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Reset System Restore.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

1. Make your Internet Explorer More Secure
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab.
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.

    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt.
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable.
    • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable.
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt.
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt.
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt.
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
2. Use and Update an Anti-Virus Software - I can not overemphasize the need for you to use and update your Anti-virus application on a regular basis. With the ever increasing number of new variants of malware arriving on the scene daily, you become very susceptible to an attack without updated protection.

3. FIREWALL
Using a third-party firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. A tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones can be found here

Do not install more than one firewall program because they will conflict with each other

4. Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. Without these you are leaving the back door open.

5. Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

6. Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Download and install Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide real time spyware and hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would with your anti-virus software. A tutorial on installing and using this product can be found here:
Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware

8. Finally, I strongly recommend that you read TonyKlein's good advice So how did I get infected in the first place?
