Hi Folks,
Machine runs pretty well, but I get this annoying pop-under – Direct buy, and a promo for the Plum American Express.
They don't always appear, but frequently enough that I worry about them.

Hi ccb,

I'm sorry it's taken a while for you to get a response, if you still need help please do as follows:

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As…, select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.
Also, tell me how often these popunders appear, and whether you have had any alerts from your protection software.
Do you still need help with your machine? If the instructions are unclear or something isn't working, please let me know before proceeding.
Hi Silver,
Thanks for your assistance.
The "popunders" appear to "float" in front of web pages during browsing with IE.
I don't have an example to post to you right now But it had to do with "DirectBuy" advertisement.

Hi ccb,

You have a remote access program called GoToMyPC installed, this is a legitimate program but if you did not knowingly install this please let me know.

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, look down the list for these items and remove them:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
JavaT 6 Update 2
JavaT 6 Update 3
JavaT SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

These are out of date and now a security risk, you can get the latest update (version 6 update 5) from here

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following line:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

You have websites in your Trusted Zone. Any sites in the Trusted Zone are a security risk, so unless you need them to be there in order for the sites to work then please remove them by checking these lines (if present):

O15 - Trusted Zone: https://trymedia.com (HKLM)
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://trymedia.com (HKLM)

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Next please do an online scan with Kaspersky:
Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer using this link:
http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/d…kavwebscan.html
  • Click Accept and the web scanner will begin to load
  • If a yellow warning bar appears at the top of the browser, click it and choose Install ActiveX Control
  • You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Install
  • If you are prompted about another ActiveX control called Kaspersky Online Scanner GUI part then allow it to be installed also.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on Next and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save Report As… button, change Save as type: to Text file and save the file to your desktop as Kaspersky.txt
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.
Also, let me know if your security software has given you any warnings since the symptoms began.
Hi Silver, – Doug here, in behalf of CCB.
I ran Kaspersky but was unable to access a report.
The Kaspersky onscreen report read 0 threats etc.
I had not yet installed Sun JAVA 6_5 and had uninstalled all other JRE versions.
I wonder if not having Sun JAVA caused it to not offer a Report?

Trymedia did not appear in IE Trusted Zone, however, I "fixed" it via HJT 015 anyway and now does not show in current HJT.

I installed MVPS Hosts File before doing any of the above, and of course, most Adware and Third Party Advertizements disappeared from browser pages.
Gotta love that Hosts File.

Machine is running relatively better than before, and just fine overall.
The machine is loaded with quite a bit of office application stuff, including a huge amount of QuickBooks and CAD software which is used frequently by CCB.

I'm relatively unhappy with the performance of IE 7.0 — particularly the anti-phishing feature that takes more time than I'd like when loading pages.
I can live with it.

Also this machine runs Windows Live One Care <— which I (doug) have little use for and it does appear to slow things a bit.

Here's a fresh HJT.
I'm also posting a PCPitstop Full Tests TechExpress, in case you want to have a look at the machine's overall performance and features
TechExpress link for your current results:
http://www.pcpitstop.com/techexpress.asp?id=B6SMSWY8NDGSR8VG

Silver,
I pretty much think we are good to go here.
However, that is not my call, and I'll wait for your instructions .
Thanks for your excellent help.
Doug

Hi ccb/Doug :)

Good job with Trymedia and MVPS HOSTS  you probably already have done so, but don't forget to disable the DNS Client service.

I'm not sure why you couldn't get a report from Kaspersky, I've not heard of Java causing any problems with it. "0 Threats" is a good sign, but unfortunately it's not as good as the log, there can be malware files locked and in use which aren't scanned so I'd like to see a scan report before finishing up here. We'll try a different scanner and see if that works better.

Also, there is one line in the HijackThis log which has not gone yet, we will try removing it again.

Download Dr.WEB CureIt to your desktop from here:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/cureit.exe
Don't use this program yet.

Please print/save a copy of the following instructions because we will be using Safe Mode, during which time you won't have access to the internet.

Next, reboot your computer in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8
A menu should appear, use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode and press enter

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following line:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Now scan with Dr Web:
  • Double-click cureit.exe to start the program.
  • Press Start and then OK to start the Express scan
  • The Express scan takes just a few moments to finish, if something is found, click Yes to cure it
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options->Change settings
  • Choose the Scan tab and UN-CHECK Heuristic analysis
  • Choose the Actions tab and make these changes:
    • Next to Infected objects select Report
    • Next to Incurable objects select Report
    • Next to Infected containers select Report
  • At the bottom-left, UN-CHECK Prompt on action, then press OK to close the settings box.
  • Note: These settings changes are IMPORTANT, please ensure you have made them before scanning
  • Then select Complete scan and press the green arrow to start the scan
  • When the scan is complete, click File-> Save report list, save the report to your desktop and close Dr Web CureIt

Now, reboot your computer normally.
Once complete, please post the Dr Web report and a new HijackThis log.
Thank you for your reply Silver. (Doug here again) The machine will be actively in use most of today, so I would find it difficult to run a Dr Web scan until this evening. I will follow your instructions at that time, and post for your additional instructions tomorrow. Thanks again.
Hi silver,

Doug again here, for ccb.

Machine seems to be running about as usual- meaning pretty well and no pop-ups since I added Hosts File.

It's been an adventure, just getting the DrWeb Report.
The following items appear in the DrWebb Quarantine:
  • descript.ion
  • inst.exe
  • inst___0.exe
  • Killwind.exe
  • PPCInstall.dll

The attached Report may not have had all the correct settings that you listed as "important" in your instructions.
But we do have a Report, and it is what it is.
📎DrWebSafeMode041508.csv.txt <– Yes, I'm able to right-click - save as - and edit off the .txt extension, leaving it as a drweb.csv

The board wouldn't let me post the DrWeb Report as a (.csv) file extension file, so I renamed it to .txt
I "think" you can rename it back by removing the .txt to display appropriately in what appears to be a spreadsheet format.
Let me know if you have another method for attaching the DrWeb Report.
Thanks

Hi ccb/Doug,

I'm glad you got the scan done, but it looks like Dr Web has deleted and quarantined some legitimate files. This is not unheard of with Dr Web scans and the settings changes are designed to prevent this happening - did you experience some difficulty with the program? If there was a problem with the program or the instructions I would appreciate feedback.

The only resulting problem we cannot easily resolve is the deletion of WkUFind.exe. This appears to be a legitimate Microsoft Works file related to update detection. If this or other functionality of Works no longer operates normally, then the application may need to be reinstalled.

KillWind.exe, sb6adts.htc, firstopt.js and two copies of inst.exe appear to be false positives. We will try and reinstate these files apart from the inst.exe files because I don't know which one is which - if it's required, the AOL Triton installer will need to be downloaded again.

You can reinstate these files manually or try this batch file:
Open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad into the box and press OK
Select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.
Then, copy/paste the contents of the following code box into Notepad:
@echo off
copy "%userprofile%\DoctorWeb\Quarantine\KillWind.exe" "C:\hp\bin\" >> results.txt 2>>&1
copy "%userprofile%\DoctorWeb\Quarantine\sb6adts.htc" "C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\Vendors\CN=Hewlett-Packard,L=Cupertino,S=Ca,C=US\Scripts\" >> results.txt 2>>&1
copy "%userprofile%\DoctorWeb\Quarantine\firstopt.js" "D:\I386\APPS\APP00229\" >> results.txt 2>>&1
del runme.bat
Select File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "runme.bat" (you MUST type the quotes)
Locate runme.bat on your Desktop and double-click it.
A black box should open and close after a short time, this is normal.
Another text file should appear on your Desktop called results.txt, do not open it until the black box has closed.
Post the contents of this file in your next response.

You can now delete dss.exe from your Desktop, also delete this folder:

C:\Deckard

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up… and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Once complete, please post the results.txt output and let me know if you had any problems with the instructions.
Silver, Your instructions are excellent, clear, and appropriately detailed. The difficulty that has cropped up with DrWeb removing apparently legitimate items resulted from poor execution on this end. Thank you for your additional attention to help remedy the situation that was not of your making. Much appreciated. In the meantime, there have been no noticeable adverse affects with the machine's current functioning. The owner/user does not utilize Works and is not likely to do so. The owner/user has not attempted any new application installations during the time of this work with you. The owner/user does not use the AOL feature that would otherwise require download to install. I will be back over to that location tomorrow and will most likely have time at the end of the day to perform the instructions of your last post. Best Regards
Since this issue appears to be resolved … this Topic has been closed. Glad we could be of assistance. If you're the topic starter, and need this topic reopened, please contact a staff member with the address of the thread. Everyone else please begin a New Topic.
