hello - I'm getting the "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" error only on certain websites - specifically, when i go to www.ebay.com, and click "my ebay", it will not load. I'm guessing it's related to some login sites. anyhow - can someone please take a look at my HJT log and let me know how this may be resolved? Thank you in advance!!

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Sorry about the delay in responding

If you still need help, Scan again with HijackThis, and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.

Please make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list… button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thank you for your reply. still having the same issues. cannot access some sites. only gives me an "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" error. in particular, i cannot access the "my ebay" page. It's rather random, but mainly it's affecting my ebay search. below is an updated repost of my hijackthis log, then immediately following is the uninstall list you requested. please let me know what you might suggest. this is very frustrating! thank you.

Hi

First of all, you need to go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall all instances of Java except this one
Java™ 6 Update 5

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto‑updating for the Viewpoint Manager ‑‑ the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):
  • Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, highlight Viewpoint Media Player, click Remove.

Lets run an F-Secure online scan it will scan for Viruses, Spyware and RootKits:
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Start Scanning button. A window will pop up.
  • Allow the Active X control to be installed on your computer, then click the Accept button
  • Click Full System Scan and allow the components to download and the scan to complete.
  • If malware is found, check Submit samples to F-Secure then select Automatic cleaning
  • When cleaning has finished, click Show report (this will open an Internet Explorer window containing the report)
Highlight and Copy (CTRL + C) the complete report, and Paste (CTRL + V) in a new reply to this post
If Automatic cleaning with Submit samples hangs, click Cancel, then New Scan
  • When the cleaning option is presented, Uncheck Submit samples to F-Secure
  • Click Automatic cleaning
  • When cleaning has finished, click Show report (this will open an Internet Explorer window containing the report)
  • Highlight and Copy (CTRL + C) the complete report, and Paste (CTRL + V) in a new reply to this post

Note: This scan will only work with Internet Explorer.
You must be logged on a administrator rights to run this scan.
The scan may take a few hours.

Hi

You can uninstall the F-Secure scanner through Add/Remove programs.

As to your problem, there is no sign of any malware on your system, so it must be caused by something else. The best option is for you to post here. The helpers there are better placed for that kind of thing.
And my attempts would probably leave you like this :pullhair:
Thank you very much for your help. I will try a few more things, and if no luck, i'll head to that other site. Thank you again for your help! ybstuk
