Hi,

I found this forum while trying to rid my wife's computer of W32.Trats.

I am not the most tech-savy guy you will ever meet, and I am hoping you guys can/will help me.

After reading here, I have a few ideas of what is going on, so let me tell you what I know, what it's doing, and what I've done to this point. I was hoping that I could fix this myself, but it is becoming apparent that I can't.

Sooo… here we go…

Norton caught the W32.Trats and claimed to have "fixed" it. It didn't. Upon logging in, I get the exact same problems. Norton scans show that it found three files, but I can see that it never gets the C;\window\system32\mlljh.exe problem.

When I log on, the machine attempts to do a couple failed installs of HP Assistant and OfficeXP Professional. It also does this any time a browser window opens.

In addition, Norton then says it has detected and blocked/fixed a couple other viruses.

At any rate, after reading here, this is what I have done:

I downloaded ATF-Cleaner.exe and ran it.

I then downloaded and ran Malewarebyte's Anti-Malware. I will post my logs after the scans.

I should point out that I had Malewarebyte perform its corrections and now I am getting some errors when I start up.

I am wondering if I have in fact removed the threats, but need to re-install Office and HP Assistant. Or are my errors indications that I still have a problem?

I was planning of using ComboFix but quickly realized that I wasn't to do that unless directed and under supervision of someone who actually knows what they are doing.

So that is where I am. Can you please help me? My wife is going to kill me if I can't figure this out.

Thanks!

John

Hi, Welcome to WhatTheTech. Can you please repost your HijackThis log? Your log is missing the header, and part of the processes, which I need to analyze your log. Thanks, Danny
Hi Danny and thank you!

This is the HijackThis! log. Dunno what happened last time. Carelessness on my part, I suppose.

Thanks.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

Danny
Thanks again Danny.

I just ran the program. It didn't pick anything up, but I suspect that it has to do with an attempt on my part that removed three files just before you posted. I'll refrain from such going forward.

At any rate, here is the new HijackThis! log that I just generated.

John

Restart your computer into normal mode, and then please post a new HijackThis log.

Danny
Hi Danny,

I did as you requested. The only file found in searches in Safe Mode was C:\windows\system32\hrdbcefo.dll. I deleted it and got a error notice on restarting that the file was missing.

Here is the new HijackThis! log and thanks again!

Danny, It seems well. It still attempts to do a failed install of HP Assistant upon startup, and it gives me an error that one of the System32 files we removed is missing upon startup. However, it does not attempt the failed install of OfficeXP anymore. I repaired OfficeXP with the original disks while I was waiting. I was planning on Repairing that HP program and Windows XP (the missing file) after we got finished. Does that seem to be a reasonable course considering the sucess I had with OfficeXP? Thank you my friend! – John
Lets take care of the HP program after we get done all of the fixes, but that is a reasonable course of action.

Just to make sure we got everything:

Please download ComboFix from one of the locations below, and save it to your Desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HijackThis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Danny
Hi Danny,

Sorry for the delay. I got called out of the office today.

I did as you instructed and here are the logs. First is the ComboFix log and the second is the latest HijackThis! log. Thank you again!

– John

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

5. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply:
  • Combofix.txt
  • A new HijackThis log.

Danny
Hi Danny,

I did as you requested, but I think I screwed one thing up. When I ran ComboFix in the manner you instructed, it ran and it DID create a log. I hit save, but I cannot find the file anywhere. I did a file search for it, but get nothing.

So, I don't know what to do about that. It did a reboot as it ran.

Here is the HijackThis! log. I hope we can work from it. Sorry!

– John
