It's been a long time since I've messed with this stuff since I haven't problems like this in over 4 years. Tried going through it myself, but I have gotten nowhere. Figured it was time to go to the pros.

Windows XP Home

Programs I have to protect my computer - Symantec, Spyware Begone, and Spybot.

I have ran Symantec and Spybot. I have removed many trojans, adware, etc… It's a never ending process I do every 3 days or so and it never solves the problems.

What I believe started it - I was fine until I updated my myspace profile with a new background. During my search for a background things started to go haywire. Never had a problem in the past with it so I wasn't on my toes this last time.

Issues - Computer has become extremely slow. This includes internet, computer programs, and navigating through the computer, such as start menu, my documents and so on.

I must have many trackers as wells since pop ups involving virus/adware/malware windows (other popups include searches using keywords from websites I have been to such as trucks, snowmobile, etc…) have been popping up nonstop since I started looking into other problems.

Registry changes have been an almost nonstop issue lately as well. Sometimes deny changes using spybot stops the messages and somtimes they keep popping up. Took 2 days to get rid of one set of registry changes, just quite popping up today.

Often get a (I believe) Microsoft C++ Runtime Library C:\WNDOWS\explorer.exe error. Closing the error message results in a loss of my taskbar and all programs/files/shortcuts on my background. Ending the message in Windows Task Manager is the only way to close the window while avoiding the losses.

C:\WINDOWS folders that seem to be new - I now have 2 system32 folders (1 is empty) and 1 system32-Save. Files located in the system32-Save folder are msxml3.dll and msxml3r.dll

Thanks in advance for the help. I hope I have given you enough info about my computer as well as the issues without including to much irrelevant mumbo jumbo.

Here is my HiJack this log. - Probably an hour after running Spybot and Symantec. Problems persisted.

Hi! Welcome to the forums.
My name is Scotty. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research.
Please be patient.

You are running an older version of Hijack This. It is important that you uninstall any previous versions by using Add/Remove programs in your control panel before installing a newer version.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • If asked to install HijackThis click on Yes
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your next reply
Here ya go.

New HijackThis log taken after the above scans have run
It's familiar to me, but I have since uninstalled it. Apparently it's still sticking around. Should I disable Tea Timer, antivirus, and antispware programs as well?
Hi Disable Tea-timer until we are finished, but the KillAll switch will shutdown the other stuff while Combofix runs. ps edited the Combo script above to include the No trace folder.

Hi

Remember to disconnect from the Internet before carrying out the next instruction, and to save the following script before you do.

Open Notepad - it must be Notepad, not Wordpad.
Copy the text below in the code box by highlighting all the text with your mouse and pressing Ctrl+C

KillAll::

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{2B0B59B4-55A3-4737-9FD5-B93C6430BF75}]

Go to the Notepad window and click Edit > Paste
Then click File > Save

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

      + Extended(If available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:

      + Scan Archives
      + Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

With the exception of Internet Explorer, which is needed for the Kaspersky Scan, keep ALL programs closed until the scan is complete. This includes your anti-virus. Once you have installed the Scanner, and the updated definitions, you can disconnect from the Internet.Re-enable the anti-virus before reconnecting to the Internet.

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the x and the /u, it needs to be there.

You may wish to keep hold of the Kaspersky Online Scan as an extra on-demand virus-scanner.
If not you can uninstall it through Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a good program to keep. If you wish to keep it, use it to do a quick scan once a week and keep it updated.

Remember though, if you already have an anti-spyware program, not to have two running at once.

Here is another free program I recommend.

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Make sure your Windows is ALWAYS up to date!

An unpatched Windows is vulnerable and even with the "best" Antivirus and Firewall installed, malware will find its way through.
So visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ to download and install the latest updates.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Here is some great information from experts in this field that will help you stay clean and safe online.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can be closed.
