[Resolved] ad.yieldmanager url internet explorer redirection

I've had some problems with IE redirecting me to an error page with ad.yieldmanger in the url. I've seen it mentioned on some other pages as a trojan, but I haven't seen anything with McAfee???

I've downloaded Hijack this and here is a scan

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your problem.


A. First we have to disable one of your security programs so that it does not interfere with our tool:

TROJAN HUNTER
  • Go to TrojanHunter Guard in the the system tray. It is a light blue icon with a magnifying glass and red handle.
  • Right click on it and select settings.
  • Uncheck "Load at startup" and "Enabled". Make sure that the program, TrojanHunter itself, is also closed/not running.


B. Please RUN HijackThis
  • Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.
  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in this thread so we can check how everything looks now.


C. Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.

  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application. (If using Windows Vista, be sure to "Run As Administrator")
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Acan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • The next screen will ask you to select the drives to scan. Leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process and, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

I've performed the items listed and here are the resulting logs. I did get a "trojan downloader" that the MBAM detected.

B. Please RUN HijackThis
  • Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    O16 - DPF: {15589FA1-C456-11CE-BF01-00AA0055595A} - http://w4s2.work4sure.com/c/ge/w4sgeen9.exe

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.



C. Restart your system.


D. Using Internet Explorer, please do a Kaspersky Online Scan

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure as follows:

We need to do this to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs
from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
  • Click Start » Run » ( type: SYSDM.CPL ) » OK
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check - Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply.
  • Uncheck - Turn off System Restore.
  • Click OK.

You have now flushed your previous System Restore points, so we will make a new one again since your computer is already clean.

  • Go to Start » All Programs » Accessories » System Tools, and select System Restore
  • In the System Restore prompt, select: Create a restore point
  • Click Next
  • Give a description to the new Restore Point. (Something like:
    Clean PC)
  • Click Create
  • Then close the window

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    3. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    9. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
    10. Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your
      machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone
      antivirus programs:
      Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources
    11. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
      (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
    12. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall
      your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
      Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones

    13. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit
      http://www.windowsupdate.com
      regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to
      install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
    14. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
      settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

    15. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular
      updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

1. Log on as Administrator, run HijackThis and place a checkmark beside the following entry:
