[Resolved] Anyone tangled with Agent-RUQ before?

Hey everyone. Recently Avast warned me that it detected a virus on my machine called Win32: Agent-RUQ. I tried to delete it with my AV software, but it had of course managed to find its way in regardless and began happily screwing around with my computer. Now, the Windows exclamation sound is playing on a continuous loop every four seconds and periodically pop-ups open telling me something about malware affecting my computer. If it wasn't so dang irritating, it would almost be funny. Of course this is just the virus at work and its a big PITA to close down all the other pop-ups that open with explorer.

If anyone has any advice on how to deep-six this thing, please let me know. :pullhair:

Thank you.
Hi! Welcome to the forums.
My name is Scotty. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research.
Please be patient.

Rename HijackThis
There is a possibility an infection which is hiding part of the HijackThis log because it's called hijackthis.exe.
Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore navigate to: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe

Right-click on HijackThis.exe & select Rename to iseeu.exe and post back a new Hijackthis log.

Please make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list… button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.
Thank you Scotty, I really appreciate the help :)

So I've renamed Hijackthis as directed. Here is my hijackthis log afterwards:

Hi

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto‑updating for the Viewpoint Manager ‑‑ the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):
  • Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, highlight Viewpoint Media Player, click Remove.

If you already have Combofix, please delete that copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.

Please download Combofix from Bleeping Computer.

If you can't download it from there, please try these 2 alternative sites:

Forospyware
Geeks to Go

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet, than disable your anti-virus and any real-time anti-spyware monitors that are running.
  • Click Start>Run copy/paste or type "%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall into the Run box and click OK.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply with a new HijackThis log.
Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
Note 2:Remember to re-enable your anti-virus and anti-spyware before reconnecting to the Internet.

In your next reply post:

Okay. Viewpoint was uninstalled/deleted. Don't have a clue what that is or how it got on the machine in the first place so I'm not going to miss it.

Here are my combofix and Hijack this logs as requested…

I'm not sure if it's worth mentioning but when I ran combofix the message "The process cannot access the file because it is in use" came up. It didn't actually seem to have any other side effects and ran through fine as far as I can tell.

Thanks again Scotty for all this help, I appreciate all your efforts.

Combofix took a very long time to run through this time and is a huge file…I had to leave it running overnight and check it this morning When I tried to post the resultsI kept getting an error about my post being too long so I had to attach as a zipped file (Hopefully this isn't a problem. :) The text file created by Combofix is 496 KB uncompressed and so was too large even to post as an attachment on its own.

Hi

Go to http://virusscan.jotti.org
Copy the following line into the white textbox:
C:/DOCUME~1/Jay/LOCALS~1/Temp/msohtml1/01/clip_image002.jpg
Click Submit.
Please post the results of this scan to this thread.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

      + Extended(If available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:

      + Scan Archives
      + Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

With the exception of Internet Explorer, which is needed for the Kaspersky Scan, keep ALL programs closed until the scan is complete. This includes your anti-virus. Once you have installed the Scanner, and the updated definitions, you can disconnect from the Internet.Re-enable the anti-virus before reconnecting to the Internet.
Every time I go to the jotti site, its got a 100% service load and I get the "Uploading file, please wait…" indefinitely. I've been back to the site a few times now, and everytime its the same story. Could I just delete C:/DOCUME~1/Jay/LOCALS~1/Temp/msohtml1/01/clip_image002.jpg? EDIT: Okay, nevermind…I just tried to browse to find where that file was and even with hidden files and folders set to be visible it was nowhere to be found. I'll just keep trying jotti until its less busy.
Must be an outbreak of viruses or something because jotti has been extremely busy for the last three or four days so I haven't been able to scan that file. Here's the Kaspersky info though. It found 5 and 23 infected objects, which is much worse than I thought it was! Sadly, I think I left myself vulnerable to these viruses by reverting to an older version of Java. I have a program called Dundjinni (map-drawing software for RPGs) which stopped working after I updated my java and sometime after that, thier IT gurus suggested that there were two safe versions of java which you could revert to and the software would work again. I was reluctant to do it at first, but with a supposed software update that would fix the problem still a ways away I wanted to make sure that was the problem and so I tried it. I'm only guessing though, because if I read the Kaspersky log correctly I have some viruses in my java files. ——————————————————————————- KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER REPORT 2008-03-21 11:28 Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 2 (Build 2600) Kaspersky Online Scanner version: 5.0.98.0 Kaspersky Anti-Virus database last update: 21/03/2008 Kaspersky Anti-Virus database records: 654208 ——————————————————————————- Scan Settings: Scan using the following antivirus database: extended Scan Archives: true Scan Mail Bases: true Scan Target - There was a zip file called SmitFraud on that list which I manually deleted so it's gone. The rest are beyond me since they are integrated, unlike that zip file.
Hi

The reason Java's are updated are to clear up security exploits so I doubt very much there are "safe" older versions. Im guessing it's their software that isnt being updated to match the newer Java versions. I cant really say for sure. But the nasty Vundo will exploit the older versions as long as they are on your computer.
I dont know the program you use though, nor do I know anything about programming, so Im not able to make suggestions. I would try one of the more suitable forums here at WTT, where someone who does know this stuff could advise you better.

Back to the task in hand. :woot:

Most of what Kaspersky found was in Combofix quarantine and the System Restore points, which will be taken care of when we uninstall combo.

That file is obviously gone now so dont worry about it. And we'll make sure of it in a moment.
