I have recently discovered that my AVG (free version) and ZoneAlarm (also free version) are no longer loading at start-up. I can manually start ZA but not AVG. I can access the Control Center in AVG and each time I do and check for updates it says I need the same priority update each time. I will download it, restart, same deal. I have turned off System Restore, updated AVG and run a scan but found nothing. I also use PC Tools Spyware Doctor 5.0, it is updated but has found nothing. I am concerned since it is unlikely that both AVG and ZA would stop loading at start-up coincidently at the same time.

Here is my HJT log:

*UPDATE* Since my original post these are new developments. Per the recommendations found on these boards, I decided to uninstall ZoneAlarm and went with Outpost instead which seemed to load at start-up and be working just fine. Today, since AVG was obviously borked, not loading at all and having to install the same Priority update each time, I uninstalled it and went with the free version of Avast. I installed it and registered accordingly, received confirmation and updates. But, when I tried to run a virus scan, twice before the scan completed, XP shut down and rebooted. I received an error advising that Windows had recovered from a serious error each time. Then, when I tried to connect to the internet using IE, I had no connection for IE, or any other software. When I tried to start one of my on-line games (Hellgate London), my comp blue screened. I was about to give up when I tried one more reboot and now am able to at least get on the net. Please advise at your earliest convenience. Thanks
Hello Havoc,

Sorry for the delay. Your older HJT log is not showing anything earth shattering but its an outdated version so uninstall it via the Add Remove Programs and download and install the latest version by Trendmicro.

Download Trendmicros Hijackthis to your desktop.
Double click it to install
Follow the prompts and by default it will install in C:\Program Files\Trendmicro\Hijackthis\Highjackthis.exe
  • Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
  • Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
  • Go to Edit> Select All…..Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread by using the Post Reply and not start a New Thread.
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Run this free online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan: Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
Post the log along with a New HJT Log into your next reply.
Thanks ken545. Recent developments, before I saw your reply I ran a "standard" Avast AV scan this morning and was able to complete a scan and did find a virus which I deleted. I then saw your reply and was able to install the latest HJT software and install the on-line Kaspersky scan as well. I was 90% thru the Kaspersky scan when the comp re booted back to desktop at which time I lost all internet capability. I then tried Avast again, this time using a "thorough" scan including archived files, found another virus and deleted it, the scan resumed then I blue screened and still cannot access the internet more than 10 seconds before I loose connection. I am posting this from my wife's comp. I saved a HJT log to a floppy and have posted it below. Otherwise I'm currently dead in the water. Suggestions?

Hello,

Don't know what you have done to lose internet access, it was not the Kaspersky scan as its quite safe.

You have few options.

Run this tool.
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html

If it did not help use System Restore to restore your computer to a previous date.
Go to Start> All Programs > Assessories > System Tools> System Restore and restore you computer to an earlier date.

Ken
Hi Ken. Thanks for the suggestion. But, the winsock fix was not successfull. Still no internet joy, and, after loading Itunes and at least being able to listen to my music for an hour or so, in mid tune,I blue screened again. And get this, after loading my last HJT log from a floppy from my wife's computer, now her computer is down. No internet capabilities what so ever. I am posting this from a laptop. Apprarently whatever affected my computer was able to infect my wife's comp just from copying the HJT log and posting it from her comp. That was the only thing on the floppy. Oh well, guess I am royally fubared. I have a tech bud coming by tomorrow to see what he can do. I'll keep you informed. Been pretty much a wasted day but I really appreciate the efforts you guys exhibit. Thanks again!
Havoc,

There are viruses that will attack removable drives like a thumb drive or a floppy and such but I see no evidence on your log for anything like that. Your old and your new HJT log are clean, so the problems your having with Blue screens and such is most likely a windows issue. I suspect that in the process of uninstalling ZoneAlarm and installing Outpost you somehow borked your internet connection. Since you said your wifes computer lost access also I would say it has nothing to do with inserting a floppy into her computer. You might want to check some settings in Outpost and make sure its letting Internet Explorer out, you may also try uninstalling Outpost and see if that makes a difference. If it does not and both computers have no access than it may be an issue with your iSP or maybe even your router if your using one.

I have seen no reports because you where unable to complete the scans so I have no idea what Avast removed , if it was good or bad.

Thanks Ken, good call on Outpost. I uninstalled it from the wife's comp and can now access the net and other programs can as well. Not sure why it was blocking, Outpost did not advise me or ask to be allowed to block anything. Is there another freeware firewall you can recommend? Regarding my rig, I expect Outpost is part of it's problem as well but I have already disconnected it so my friend can check it out. And I agree that it probably has a Windows problem as well due to the constant spontaneous re boots and blue screens. Regarding the virus Avast found, the first one was called JS: Feebs chtr_dectree.js, the second one Avast did not provide a name other than ieksie.dl, the third one I deleted but forgot to notate the dang name. I did try initally to move it to the vault but Avast said something about there not being enough space which sounded kinda scarey  so I just deleted it. Avast was about 50% thru that particular scan but after it resumed the comp re booted before it could finish. I forgot to mention that in the middle of all my efforts yesterday I was able to complete a Kaspersky scan which seemed to indicate no problems. BTW, Avast did find over 300 files that it said it could not scan. It provides a list of the files but I have no idea if I should do something with them or what. Anyways, hopefully my friend can get my rig's issues resolved today. After I get back up and running, since you indicated my HJT looked clean, is there anything else I need to provide to you to make sure my comp is OK? I'll post the Kaspersky results asap. Thanks!
Hello,

I have been using the free version of ZoneAlarm for the past 6 years with no problem, there has been and alert about it because the latest version installs a monitoring toolbar, if you dont want the toolbar you can uncheck it during the installation.

As far as windows problems, you can try this.

Depending on how your manufacturer set up your system, you may or may not need the Windows XP CD. If you have a I386 folder on your C:\ drive you may not need the disk.
  • Click Start>Run
  • Type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
  • Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
  • This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things.

This forum is for removing malware only and it appears that the issues your having are windows related so I am going to link you to some forums that deal with issues like yours.

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster, you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot.

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0.0.12 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
