Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum. I was surfing the internet for some research on ceramic tile showers for the house I am building and one site I went to started popping up pornography and trying to download a bunch of stuff on my computer. I closed everything and rebooted, but i was too late. I don't know what is wrong with my computer now.

I have Norton antivirus, but my subscription is expired. I ran a scan with TrendMicro House Calls and fixed two viruses, but I am still having problems. The computer can be sitting idle with no one using it and the speakers will start playing audio files like someone is getting the entertainment news. I am afraid that someone has gained access to my computer or internet access through my computer and I want to protect all of my files and passwords. I do everything on the computer, including banking and bill paying.

The following is my hijack this log file.

Can someone please help me figure out how to fix my computer? I would greatly appreciate any advice.

Thank you,

Connie

I need advice, please. My computer is still not operating correctly. It is running slow and freezing up. Web sites are running slow, too. I've run spybot and this is my newest log:

Hi

You need to disable TeaTimer, so that it doesn't interfere with our fix.

This is a two step process.
First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, click once on Resident Protection, then right-click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For both versions :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go to the bottom of the vertical panel on the left, click Tools
  • Then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Download SDFix and save it to your desktop.

It would be a good idea if you print out these instructions or write them down, as you wont have access to the internet.

We need to boot into Safe Mode:
  • Restart the computer.
  • as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
  • Press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode:
  • Right click the SDFix.zip folder on your Desktop and choose Extract All,
  • Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the script.
  • It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your reply.

Thanks.
jpshortstuff,

Thanks for your response. I have followed the first steps. Following are the results of the sdfix program. I will now dowload Deckard's and send send it in the next post.

Hi

Please remember to keep Spybot's TeaTimer disabled, until I give you the 'all clear'.

1. Go to Start->Run and type in notepad and hit OK.

2. Then copy and paste the content of the following codebox into Notepad:

@echo off
FOR %%G IN (
"C:\Program Files\tmp*.exe"
) DO (
attrib -r -h -s %%G
del /q /f %%G
)
del delete.bat

3. Save the file to your DESKTOP as "delete.bat". Make sure to save it with the quotes. Once saved, the icon to click should look like this on your desktop: [external image: Posted Image]

4. Double click delete.bat.

Open HijackThis. Hit Do A System Scan Only. Place a check next to the following items (if present):
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [BgMonitor_{79662E04-7C6C-4d9f-84C7-88D8A56B10AA}] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\Lib\NMBgMonitor.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [QuitCounter] C:\Program Files\Quit Counter\QuitCounter.exe

Close all browsers and windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

My computer has been running much better. I'm still not sure that it's okay to use for online banking. I want to be sure there are no viruses attached to my root files. Kasperksy still picked up some viruses. I will use the computer tonight and see if it's still doing anything odd.

Thank you for all of your help. I really appreciate it.

Connie
Hi

When running delete.bat from my last post, did you get any error messages? Is the file still on your dekstop?

Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    C:\Program Files\tmp157468.exe

  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste Standard List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the light blue bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Any other problems?

Thanks.

Hi

I have Norton antivirus, but my subscription is expired.

If this is the case, you either need to renew your subscription, or uninstall Norton Anti-Virus and install a free Anti-Virus program (like Avast! or AVG Free). Make sure you only have one on-access (real-time) scanner running at any one time.

Open HijackThis. Hit Do A System Scan Only. Place a check next to the following items (if present):
R3 - URLSearchHook: &Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} (PopCapLoader Object) - http://playgames.comcast.net/online2/bejew…aploader_v6.cab

Close all browsers and windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Log looks good

Clean up with OTMoveIt2
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Set correct settings for files that should be hidden in Windows XP
  • Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
  • Under "Hidden files and folders" if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • If unchecked please checkHide protected operating system files (Recommended)
  • If necessary check "Display content of system folders"
  • If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Click OK

Re-enable TeaTimer:
  • Open Spybot
  • Click on Tools in bottom left hand corner.
  • Click on Resident.
  • Check Resident "TeaTimer" box.
  • Click on Allow change ONLY to popup box with:
  • Entry: SpybotSD Teatimer
  • Click on Mode, select Default mode
  • Close Spybot

Now that your system appears to be clean, theres just a few steps I'd like you to take to prevent any future infections.
  • System restore:
We will now clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:
    • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
    • Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
    • Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
    • Select the More options tab
    • Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.
Make sure you do this now, as your System Restore currently has infected files in it.

  • Keeping your Windows up-to-date is crucial to your computer's security. Please go to the Windows Update Site (using Internet Explorer) and download and install all critical updates on a regular basis.

  • Make sure you update your Anti-Virus software regularly, new viruses are being developed all the time.

  • Some more programs that it would be useful to have [OPTIONAL but RECOMMENDED]:

SpywareBlaster is another real-time scanner that prevents most spyware from even being installed.
    Freely available: Download SpywareBlaster

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.
Also, please read this great article by Tony Klein: So How Did I Get Infected In First Place

Glad we could be of assistance.

Please reply to this thread once more if you are satisfied so that we can mark the problem as resolved.

Stay Clean!

jpshortstuff
JPshortstuff, I uninstalled norton and installed avg 7.5. Ran Otmoveit, set correct settings for files as recommended, re-enabled Teatimer and established a new system restore point and cleared the old restore points. I did not install spywareblaster or winpatrol. Can I use them with AVG? Connie
 Running Spyware Blaster or WinPatrol with AVG AV is perfectly fine. If you are worried about your system's performance, then perhaps you should just install one to begin with, and then see how it affects your system. These programs are not completely necessary, but they do add that little extra protection to your computer, and will pick up things that your anti-virus wont. Please can I just see one final HijackThis log before we close this topic. Thanks.
