Computer needs major help- popups

5 min read

At first there was only a popup when I opened Internet Explorer. It was usually for some porn site. I've been trying to get help from different sites but no one replies and now my internet is extremly slow and popups are showing up randomly as I surf the web. In the corner it usually says ad served by browsing tool. I hope someone can help.

Welcome to the Forums.

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear. So lets do this to the end!

  • Saveand quit any work your doing before beginning the fix.
  • All hijackthis logs I ask for should be done in normal mode ( not safe mode)
  • These logs should be done last after you have followed my instructions in the previous post.

Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

RUN HJT

HJT
Run hijackthis and choose scan only and place a check by the following lines if present.
Close all other windows and browsers except HJT before clicking on Fix Checked

O2 - BHO: BrowsingTool - {D0661233-42D4-F7F1-80E1-8A9E0E99E71D} - C:\Program Files\BrowsingTool\BrowsingTool-2.dll

Close that.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please post the contents of that log.

If you accidently close it you may find it here.
    Start -> All Programs -> Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware -> Logs

I can't find enough infrormation on this file so let's have it scanned online.

    Submit a file to Jotti
    Please go here : http://virusscan.jotti.org/
On top of the page there is a field to add the filepath, copy and paste these filepaths: 1 at a time.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\stealthp.exe

    Then hit Submit
The scan will take a while before the result comes up so please be patient.
Then copy the result and post it here in this thread.

If Jotti's service load is too high, you can use the following scanner instead:
    http://www.virustotal.com/xhtml/index_en.html

In your next reply I would like to see:
  • A new HJT log
  • The report from malwarebytes
  • The report from Jottis/virus total
  • Let me know how the pop-ups are.
So far everything seems better. I've only opened IE a few times and no popups so far. Here's everything. Thank you so much for the help, I really do appreciate it.

I'm checking on something for you.
In the mean time there is a thing or two you need to do.

You need to update SunJava for security reasons.
Updating Java:
Download the latest version of
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update5

  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5
… allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. It should have the [external image: Posted Image] icon next to it.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u5-windows-i586-p.exe
    to install the newest version.

I see that Viewpoint is installed.

Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". In 2006, this may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.

I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present:
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
If AOL is present, to prevent it from being recreated every time you run the AOL software:
  • Open AOL
  • Go to Help on the toolbar
  • Select About AOL
  • Hit Ctrl D and a secret panel can be accessed which will allow you to disable all desktop and IM features associated with Viewpoint.
Another way to prevent Viewpoint from being recreated every time you run the AOL software is:
  • Click C:\Program Files\AOL 9.0\Jiti (a hidden folder).
  • Rename viewpoint.exe to viewpoint.old.
This is the item to fix in HijackThis.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

This is just so your aware of something with Spy no more.

It used to be listed as a rogue program but no longer is.

Just have a quick read here. Seems there tech support was lacking a while back.
I am not sure if this situation has gotten better yet. This is just an FYI for you.

In your next reply I would like to see:
  • A new HJT log
I uninstalled viewpoint but in my control panel there is still a shortcut of some sort that I can't seem to delete.

I use AIM and I can't find the C:\Program Files\AOL 9.0\Jiti file you mention or the secret panel in the about section. Probably because I don't actually use AOL.

Alright Steve.
Everything looks pretty good.

I just have 1 question for you.

This Program

StealthPlug Control Panel

Looks as if it is a music program of sorts. Maybe attaching instruments to your computer ?
Can you tell me about it ?

Also how is everything running ?
Everything is working good right now. No complaints. Stealthplug allows you to hook up your guitar to the computer. It has programs that help you make your own songs, have different types of amps, etc.
