Trevuren,

I found the original HP CDs and I reloaded the HP software. I ran AVG and it came back clean. I ran Super Antispyware. it came back with 71 adware cookies and 1 other adware (busmaster) . It cleaned those up and rebooted.

It still starts up slow - paints the icons very slow. on startup it opens a window for HPQ\QuickL~ and then one for system32\kmd.exe.
otherwise seems to be running pretty well. I have added a HJT scan log below

I may need to open another thread for a different computer. Have an IBM/Lenova thinkpad that comes up with a message saying "Unmountable Boot Volume" . I already had the C drive refornatted once and they reloaded the files after scanning them with AVG. It appears that it cant find the C drive even if I boot up in Safe mode. The symptoms are that it does a file check (fsck) then it strats failing to boot up. Happened before the Cdrive reformet and now same thing happened again. I am wondering if this isnt a hardware problem with a bad C drive. Its hard to workwith because it does not bootup at all. I found the manulas but have not found the disks for that one yet. If you think its a virus problem that can be fixed I will open another thread for it.

The issues you're having with the IBM/Lenova thinkpad, I suggest you post in our hardware forum.
http://forums.whatthetech.com/General_Hardware_f126.html

I suggest you do this:

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

I only see a few minor items that don't need to run at startup

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [combofix] C:\WINDOWS\system32\kmd.exe /c C:\ComboFix\Combobatch.bat

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
LDTATE,

I followed your instructions and posted the HJT log below. The machine is starting up better now after the cleanup. Thanks for your response and your help. This group does a fantastic job.

I missed a couple I'd fix.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

After that you should be good to go
