I am home over spring break from college and writing this in regards to my parents home computer. It has been getting progressively slower ever since they got it so i thought I would come on here to see if someone could diagnose a problem. whenever we use this system we always get notifications that pop up and say this:

The application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\xlibgfl254.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.

This pops up often with various different headings including CCUpdate.exe - Bad image or cctray.exe - Bad image. Internet explorer also has to shut down often when a window pops up that says something similar to "internetexplorer has encountered a problem and needs to shut down". There are two options presented, either send error report or don't send error report. I know they did have a virus or something a while back ( I believe infection name was win32/Nochod.AN ) but downloaded software that took care of it. I'm thinking maybe there are still remnants of this virus lurking or there is something else causing this. This system is a dell dimension 4700 and is only a few years old. it seems a lot slower to me than it should be. It only has 512 MB of RAM but has a good processor at 2800 MHz i believe. Is there something you can see in my HJT log that can maybe pinpoint a problem. thanks so much for your time and help. i really appreciate it and so do they. The sooner i get a reply the better because I will be going back to college in 10 days and won't have access to this system to help my parents out. THANKS. Here's the log.

when i try to post the combofix log i get an add on error. File: aoltb.dll I don't know if it is too big to post because it is very lengthy. what would you like me to do? I can't put it in as ann attachment because it is too large as well.

I'm sure it's all the files we removed from those folders. Don't worry about that scan.
Do the fix I posted above
alright gimme a bit to do the java installation. this system isnt exactly a speed demon. it is performing better somewhat. the internet page loads a lot faster than before but i still cant do anything on that page for at least 10-15 seconds. for example., i will type in google.com and hit enter. google will appear really fast now, which it didnt before. BUT, i still can't do anything on that page for at least 10-15 seconds. I can't click anything or begin to type anything. the system has a good processor i think (2800 MHz ?) but only 512 MB of RAM. Could the memory be the issue here? I'll be back with the java update shortly.

I have to head out now for a few hours at least. I will try to get on tonight to reply but if I do not get on i will be on tomorrow for sure. Thanks for all of your help thus far. I appreciate it. Have a great day.
Good job

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Here's my usual all clean post

    Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

    %SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

    Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
    Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      • Click once on the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Note: I no longer suggest Zone Alarm

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Using IE-SPYAD to help block unwanted sites and activities

  • Winpatrol

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein
Alrighty I have finished all the instructions. System is still running slow still but at least now I know that it isn't due to any viruses or spyware. Thanks for all the help. I really appreciate it. You have a great website here and a great service. Keep up the good work. Go ahead and close this up when you're ready.
