Hello everyone … my name is Jay and I'd like to say thank you for being available.

I'm running a Dell Dimension 2400 – thru Verizon Fios w/XP Home SP2, IE7 and Yahoo homepage.
Use Zone Alarm Security Suite 7 (1/24/08) for both virus and spyware detection and Spybot S&D 1.4
w/upgrades and the following problems haven't been detected on any scan.

Two unfamiliar applications appeared on ZA program control (for access permission) and after
researching them, i've identified both as back door trojans.

Am wondering if someone will please help get rid of 'em. :)

Not sure what Else may be lurking … but these are the two entries referenced:
1. set14.tmp … this is said to be an alternate name for TVUAX.inf (trojan)
2. unvise32qt.exe … this is said to be an installer / back door trojan

Here are some of the computer actions i've noticed; shortcuts to Yahoo homepage, from both the
start menu and taskbar show a different address even though the homepage displays correctly …
the address has changed to: www.yahoo.com/?rs=1 … am not sure why this is happening although
usually (not always) when the House shortcut on homepage is clicked, the correct address appears
(www.yahoo.com) … when it doesn't, usually a re-start is performed … I have deleted and
re-created several shortcuts, only to have them become poluted again.

Then just yesterday, a different, longer address appeared for the homepage … and displays when
accessing the "Y" home page from my homepage (www.yahoo.com/?fr=fptb-msgr)

Responding to email has become nearly impossible … this info for example is being typed in
Notepad, then will be cut and paste (hopefully) into the post and with any luck, i can do it
quick enough or will be timed out and have to start fresh, from the WTT homepage (it doesn't
even return to the originating forum)

When in ANY internet application, mail, social pages, news, etc … the current page seems to
time-out and auto back page without recovery … responding to mail is impossible .. each
keystroke initiates a random page scroll … typing one or two sentences for a response is a
true challenge … At the same time, the screen will randomly scroll when no contact is made
with the mouse or keyboard.

If you are quick enough to hit send before the auto back-page occurs, outgoing mail seems to
process correctly, however, if you do not hit send quick enough, the auto back-page will lose
all info in the reply … a forward command advances to my inbox instead of the unfinished reply.
No tab appears in taskbar for the reply page and it appears … lost into oblivion.

Navigating my Myspace page is a joke, Ebay is almost untouchable (get notice IE has encountered
a problem and must be shut down - but not always)

Someone, P L E E Z throw me a rope, i'm drowning !!!

I have run the following prior to this post … Open hidden files, ATF Cleaner, CCleaner, Spybot
S&D, Malwarebytes, Zone Alarm and HijackThis … please note Spybot found one green entry (Log)
Activity: SchedLgU.Txt (i believe this is related to the scheduler) - Zone Alarm found nothing,
Malwarebytes scan and the HJT follows.

Sorry about the delay in responding :(

If you still need help, Scan again with HijackThis, and copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thank you LD Tate … yes, i still need help, please. The system is back paging at will … also, when multiple pages open, it frequently reverts to the original tab (sometimes while trying to access a link on the current page) and it does this without warning or operator initiation.

I have found the system to be infected with two identified trojans (in 1st post) … while responding to email, viewing any Internet page and occasionally at will, regardless of the application, the screen randomly scrolls … without mouse or keyboard contact and does not immediately respond … I no longer have HP components on this system, yet it continuously asks for access permissions. Am running Zone Alarm Security Suite 7 and none of the scans has located a problem. In the ZASS Program Control module is where i found the "files" linked to the trojans … am not sure how to get rid of 'em or why nothing is detecting 'em. [set14.tmp & unvise32qt.exe]

Please advise …. am patiently awaiting your grand guidance. :) Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask, i have not encountered any problem like this, before. Thanks in advance. Jaybird
PS: Ran ATF Cleaner, CCleaner, Spybot & ZA … all, before running this HJT (all scans clean)

Thanks LD for taking the time to look into this … i have downloaded the combofix program but will run it after work today … log will be posted, later this evening. Please accept my apology for the delay in responding … not enough hours in a day to be online daily. Again, thanks for your patience and continued cooperation. Jaybird
Hello LD Tate … thanks again for your patience. Following your instruction, here are the logs for Combofix and HJT. Upon signing-in to post, my desktop link went to that "www.yahoo.com/?rs=1" address again. Deleted the shortcut and linked to homepage from start menu. When running combofix, i forgot to disable / turn-off Zone Alarm. No problem indicated (except for continuous permission requests ! :) just wanted you to know in case it makes a difference.

Just so you know, i am Not currently running any HP components, Grisoft software or AOL … anything related to these should probably be removed. Any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
Patiently awaiting your advice,
Jaybird

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Good morning … powering up, this morning brought Zone Alarm scan into immediate action (forgot to disable, remember ?) … thought to skip it but let it go not wanting to interrupt the normal sequencing.

Once completed, for the first time in weeks, the results identified the following: 2 entries "trojan" with registry identity (i think) ending in … Kazaa\Local Content & .Win32\Software\Kazaa [this secondary listing included a dir identity: C:Windows\Downloaded Installations] — Zone Alarm identified each as the following: "Kazaa Lite Goop 28" (medium rating) & "P2P-Worm.Win32" (high rating)

Both items were manually quarantined … should i go ahead and delete them ??
Also, 4 cookies were Auto treated (deleted) … let me know if you need to know which ones.

Ok, after completing the combofix Script … and a re-boot, a new IE link appeared on the desktop, so i clicked it … BUT it directed to the ?rs=1 address … so, i clicked the 'house' link on that homepage display and was directed to the correct yahoo address .com.

I have not navigated anywhere other than the email to link to this response.
However, typing this entire message has been quite cooperative (no scrolling, back-paging, interruptions of any kind) … doesn't seem to be "timed-out" either, cause i sure haven't had enough coffee, yet … meaining, i would have been bumped back, looooonnnngg ago.

Here are the reports …

Yes remove both.

After the above:

Good job

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Here's my usual all clean post

    Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

    %SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

    Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
    Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      • Click once on the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Note: I no longer suggest Zone Alarm

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Using IE-SPYAD to help block unwanted sites and activities

  • Winpatrol

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

So how did I get infected in the first place?

Hello again Larry … that was terrific advice and instructions … followed your suggestions and decided to re-install the ZASS from scratch (especially since we thought the system was clean). Problem now is … after finishing the re-install, the first scan found this trojan: Win32.Trojan.Clicker.Agent.ii Zone Alarm quarantined it and i manually deleted the entry. Searched for info but couldn't find a "match" … found several similar referenced trojans (only the "ii" extension different) and most seem to be related to a rootkit issue (totally not familiar) … do you have any advice, suggestions or instructions ??? Am currently running another scan to see if it's found again and can re-post with an HJT if you think it's necessary. I really thought we got it all, but now i wonder … any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for everything, Jaybird & Mouse

Anything found in the scan?
Post a new HijackThis log.
2nd scan completed clean … both virus and spyware. Got notice of the ZASS upgrade, today … to version 470 (am using and just re-installed 462, yesterday) .. :( Typical :) At this point, i plan to install the "new" version, hopefully tomorrow … probably better to run the clean install vs update, wouldn't you agree ??? After completing the install, would you mind if i post a fresh HJT … just to be sure all looks good ?? thanks for everything !!! jaybird
