I'm using windows XP SP2 OS, 256MB RAM. A couple of days back I tried to update windows by clicking on windows update option in tools menu of IE. I was unable to download, it showed failed message. When searching for help why the download has failed, I was given many possible reasons, one of them was might be problem in firewall settings.

Earlier I was using Sygate personal firewall, but I remember that I uninstalled it a month ago itself. I clicked on Windows security alerts in the systems tray and the firewall tab was green in color with a message saying it is in ON state. When I clicked on it, there was a message saying that Sygate personal firewall is currently on. I couldn't understand why it is so.

I tried to download and install Sygate personal firewall again. But matter got a bit worse. A message started prompting continuously saying "DrWatson debugger experiencing a problem. Do you want to send error report to Microsoft". I uninstalled the firewall immediately.

As I browse the internet, suddenly the RUN starts automatically and "%systemroot%\system32\cmd.exe" is typed by itself. Command prompt opens. In the command prompt "tftp 128.(some ip address) get avp.exe & start avp.exe" is typed automatically. I close the command prompt before that particular statement gets executed.

I'm experiencing this problem for the past 2 days. This command prompt would have got opened atleast 5 times in these 2 days. Today I opened E drive for some reason, there I found an unknown folder with "d898bd155984a667ba" as the name of the folder. It had an application file named "mrtstub" of size 37kb. Date modified is 4th march. I don't know what it is.

So these are the problems I'm experiencing for past 2 days. I realised that its high time to post the problem here. Kindly help me out. Eagerly waitig for the reply. Thank you.

Thank you for your reply. I did as you said and I have pasted the log below.

On 6th March I posted the problems my computer was facing. When I turned on the computer on 7th March, the folder in the E drive that I mentioned was missing. I did not deleted it, but it has disappeared. But the other problems that I mentioned in my earlier post is still persisting.

I also said that RUN opens automatically and then it opens command prompt through RUN. Then in the command prompt it automatically starts typing tftp followed by an IP address. But I didn't mention the ip address in my previous post. Here it is: "[removed]".

Kindly help me out in solving the problem.

Reboot and post a new DSS log and tell me how your PC is running
Hello,

Thank you for replying so patiently. I followed your instructions strictly.

You asked me to run Hijackthis and do system scan only. Then select the below mentioned links, if present and click fix this.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Task Manager] C:\WINDOWS\svhost32.exe

Of the two, only the second was present in the list.

Then I downloaded the application which you said and pasted the codes that you had posted in your earlier reply, in the respective area in the application. I was not prompted to reboot to move the file or folder. You asked me to paste the result that is obtained at the end. Here it is.

D:\Downloads\Divx\AVICodecPackPlus2.exe moved successfully.
File/Folder H:\ntde1ect.com not found.
File/Folder C:\WINDOWS\svhost32.exe not found.

OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer - Version 1.0.21 log created on 03152008_204722

Then you asked me to reboot and run dss.exe. I did so. At the end, only main.txt notepad alone opened. When I ran dss.exe for the first time this morning, two notepads, main.txt and extra.txt opened. But now only one notepad, that is main.txt alone opened. I have pasted the main.txt log below.

You also asked me how the system is behaving after all this. I just cannot say when will the RUN and COMMAND PROMPT will open and start typing the commands automatically. It suddenly happens. So I do not know as far as that one is concerned. I opened the Windows Security Alerts from the system tray. I could still see the Firewall option green in color and displaying the same message saying "Sygate Personal Firewall is ON". But as I already said, there is no firewall installed in my system. I had problem while downloading the windows update earlier. I had mentioned about it in my first post of this thread. Now I didn't try to download to check whether I'm able to download or not without your instruction.

Your log is clean ! We need to do a few things

  • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Click on the CleanUp! button
  • A list of tool components used in the Cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
  • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OtMoveit2 to rech the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
  • Click Yes to beging the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Now we need to create a new System Restore point.

Click Start Menu > Run > type (or copy and paste)

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Next goto Start Menu > Run > type

cleanmgr

Click OK, Disk Cleanup will open and start calculating the amount of space that can be freed, Once thats finished it will open the Disk Cleanup options screen, click the More Options tab then click Clean up on the system restore area and choose Yes at the confirmation window which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created.

To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.

You now need to update your Java and remove your older versions.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.

* Click Start > Control Panel.
* Click Add/Remove Programs.
* Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in the name.
* Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE), and install it to your computer from
here

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

* Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

* To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs:
SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all
Have a look at this tutorial for IE-Spyad here

* SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Make Internet Explorer more secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from
Here

* Take a good look at the following suggestions for malware prevention by reading Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place'
Here

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.
Hello, Thank you for helping me out to solve the problem. I once again followed each and every step that you had instructed in your last post. I was able to download the windows update unlike the last time when I was unable to download the same. I have now downloaded Mozilla Firefox from the link you provided. I have already installed Spyware Blaster and IE SpyAd. Also I have updated Java Runtime Environment as well. There is one problem still persisting. That is, the firewall which is enabled. But I do not have Sygate Personal Firewall installed in my computer. Once I had it. But not now. I have uninstalled it. How can a software which is not in the system can be active or functioning ? I doubt if its some kind of error. Can you please help me in rectifying it. Thank you very much. Note: I wanted to show you the screenshot of what I am saying, but I couldn't paste it over here. How can I do that so that you can understand me better. Thank You.
I see no traces of Sygate in your logs, so I wouldn't worry You could try install it again then uninstall it to remove all traces Anything else ?
