Hello emance and welcome to the WhatTheTech Forum

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your problem.

A. One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do. Just in case you decide to clean your machine, I will provide you with the first step in that process.

B. Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
    (Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log
Thanks for the information. I will reformat and reinstall the OS. You say that the trojan was identified, How was this contracted? Why was this not caught be the Avast a/v scanner? I ran a boot scan with Avast and 3 viruses where found. I've been using Avast for some time with great results along with Sonicwall firewalls running the Gateway Security Services. I also run Windows Defender. This particular machine with the back door trojan is a laptop that is used remotely from the from the office and they don't have a real firewall at home. I have 2 other PC's that have contracted browser highjakers. With all of the protection I have running, how is this stuff still getting through. I appreciate your time and insight into this matter. Thanks, Eric

How was this contracted

It is impossible to tell. They usually come in through file sharing, IRC using or cracked software. But there are other ways too.

Why was this not caught be the Avast a/v scanner

Some AV and software firewalls (Which still must be used even if you are behind a router) let some malware through, others let other malware through. The detection rated vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and these also vary from one year to the next. You have to do your research every year to see who appears to be doing the best job. The problem is the standards by which they are measured also vary considerably so it is a bit like shooting craps.

It is often called "unsafe" surfing habits. Someone tries out a pretty site and as soon as you get on the site, you pick up the bug that then proceeds to call in its friends without your knowledge. (Backdoor trojans, trojan downloaders, keyloggers, etc….) This is often big time criminals who are involved in "identity theft". There is a lot of money to be made by stealing identities.

Good Luck with your format and reinstall and if you have some money to spare, try Eset Security Suite or Kaspersky Security Suite. They appear to be enjoying excellent detection and interdition ratings over the last few years.
