Hello, and welcome to the forum.

My name is Simon V., and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

During this fix you may get some user account control (UAC) prompts; if you do, then please click continue/allow to allow the changes.

Step 1

Please download and install CCleaner.

Open CCleaner. On the Windows tab, leave the default options alone.

  • On the Applications tab, check (tick) all the boxes except Saved Form Information. This will remove all your saved passwords if you leave this box checked.
  • Click on the Run Cleaner button at the bottom right hand corner.
  • When the cleaner has completed, click Tools in the Left Pane.
  • Verify that Uninstall is highlighted in color, or click on it.
  • In the lower right, click Save to Text File.
  • Pull down the arrow at the top of the Save dialog and choose Desktop as the location.
  • You can leave the filename as install.txt.
  • Click Save, then exit Ccleaner.

Step 2

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!ri).

  • Right-click on SmitfraudFix.exe and click Run as administrator.. A screen will pop up. Select Option 1 (Search) by typing 1 and hit Enter. A text file will appear, which will list the infected files. Save it to a convenient location.
  • The log will also be saved here: C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some Anti-Virus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Step 3

In your next reply, please post:

  • the SmitfraudFix log (C:\rapport.txt)
  • the CCleaner Uninstall List (install.txt)
  • a new HijackThis log
Thank you Simon

Here are the 3 logs starting with hijack this……rapport and then smitfraud

A ———– line seperates them.

»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» End
Hi :)

Step 1

Click on Start, then Control Panel. Double click on Add or Remove Programs.

Please remove the following program(s):

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.1
Java™ 6 Update 3
Viewpoint Media Player
<– Optional

Then download and install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5.

Step 2

Print these instructions or copy them to Notepad and save it to your desktop, as you won't be able to access internet in Safe Mode.

Please reboot into Safe Mode. To do this, go to Start > Turn off Computer, and select Restart. Rapidly tap F8 just before Windows starts to load. In the menu that appears, select Safe Mode (Without Networking).

Log in to your usual account.

Step 3

Right-click on SmitfraudFix.exe and click Run as administrator.

  • A screen will pop up. Select Option 2 (Clean) by typing 2 and hit Enter.
  • You will be prompted: Registry Cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry? Answer Yes by typing Y and press Enter in order to clean registry keys associated with the infection.
  • The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file; answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
  • The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart Windows into Normal Mode.
  • A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please save it to a convenient location. The report can also be found at C:\rapport.txt.

Note: running Option 2 (Clean) on a computer that is not infected will remove your desktop background.

Step 4

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • You can also access the log by doing the following:

  • Click on the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware icon to launch the program.
  • Click on the Logs tab.
  • Click on the log at the bottom of those listed to highlight it.
  • Click Open.

Step 5

In your next reply, please post:

  • the SmitfraudFix log (C:\rapport.txt)
  • the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log
  • a new HijackThis log
Hi again Simon How and more importantly, where does the computer pick up these bugs? Is there a way to keep it from happening again? Thanks Karl

Hi again Simon

How and more importantly, where does the computer pick up these bugs?

Is there a way to keep it from happening again?

Thanks

Karl

Malware can come from many different sources… Peer-to-Peer programs and cracks/serials are the main cause. When your computer is clean, I'll give you some prevention tips to keep your computer clean in the future :)
Hi Simon Are there any of the features of Java that I don't want to install? -Development tools -demos and samples -source code -public JRE -Java DB

Hi Simon

Are there any of the features of Java that I don't want to install?

-Development tools
-demos and samples
-source code
-public JRE
-Java DB

Normally, you only need "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5". The rest is for developers.
Simon Can you take me through the smitfraudfix process as it is saying the exe file did not download correctly. I am using windows Vista Thanks

When the dialog box opens do I want to run or save it?

You have to save SmitfraudFix.exe to your desktop, for instance. You've already managed to create a logfile, so running option 2 shouldn't be a problem… If you're still experiencing problems with SmitfraudFix, let me know the exact error message you receive.
Simon

Simon I get an message when I run hijack this. It says…. —————————————————————————— For some reason your system denied write access to the hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this fil, Hijack this may NOT be able to fix this. If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this click start, run and type notepad C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts and press enter, Find the line(s) HijackThis reports and delete them, Save the file as 'hosts' (with quotes), and reboot. For Vista: simply exit HijackThis, right click on the HijackThis icon, Choose 'Run as administrator'. —————————————————————————– I did what it said for Vista and have a new log. Thanks
