[Resolved] RUNDLL error

I need help weeding out the bad seeds on my Hijack This log. I keep getting a RUNDLL error (MWSBAR.DLL), my computer is very slow and it sometimes takes several clicks to get any links to come up on IE. I have no idea if the issues are related but I do have 4 kids and a husband using this computer. Help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your reply.

Close all browsers and windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.


We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

It would be a good idea if you print out these instructions or write them down, as you wont have access to the internet.

Next, we need to boot into Safe Mode.
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
  • Press Enter.

You appear to have MyWebSearch installed. For reasons outlined here, I recommend you uninstall this. Also, I believe this is the cause of the error you are getting.

Viewpoint Media Player is often installed without the users permission. If you didn't install it, or if you did but you no longer use it, I recommend you get rid of it.

Please click Start >> Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.
Find each of the below items on the list and click remove on each one.

Please Right Click your Start button, and click Explore.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Follow this link in Internet Explorer (Note: You must use Internet explorer to use Kaspersky): Kaspersky WebScanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    o Scan Options:
    Scan Archives Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
    Select My Computer
  • The program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    o Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
Please post the results of the Kaspersky scan in your next reply, along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Please also describe any changes to your computer's behavior.

Everything that you told me to delete deleted except for My Web Search, I could not it to remove in Add and Remove programs. It gave me the same error message as when I was logging on… which, by the way, isn't showing up now.

Yes, "My Web Search" is still visible in ADD/REMOVE Programs. I didn't have any trouble deleting the files and folders today and my computer does seem to be running better. I logged into our other user accounts (Fallyn, Cody, Tarryn & Jordyn) and they are getting "Kodak EasyShare" warnings, Cody's has a "Kodak Software Updater" error and Tarryn had an "Google Desktop" error. The "Google Desktop" is something that I did not download and, to my knowledge, I was not using… so I uninstalled it. :unsure: I didn't screw up did I? Here is my current HijckThis log:

Please Right Click your Start button, and click Explore.
Next, please navigate to the following folders, and then see if you can see the file I have mentioned below it:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Post that log back here.

We need to run DSS again.
  • Make sure that DSS.exe is located on your Desktop.
  • Click on your START button, then choose Run. A little box will appear.
  • Now copy and paste all the following in bold (including the "" marks into the run box and click OK.

    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config

  • This will start DSS in a different way. A small window will appear.
  • Click the Check All button.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • When the scan is complete, please post the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your next reply.

To repair the faulty file associations, please do the following:

  • Make sure that DSS.exe is located on your Desktop.
  • Click on your START button, then choose Run. A little box will appear.
  • Now copy and paste all the following in bold (including the "" marks into the run box and click OK.

    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daft

  • This will start DSS in a different way. A small window will appear.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • If it finds faulty file associations, they will appear in red beside a checkbox. If this occurs, just place a tick in the boxes in question.
  • Click the Fix button.
  • Re-scan and save a logfile. By default, it will save as daft.txt.
Post the contents of that logfile with your next post.



Please do this:
  • Copy the contents of the Code Box below to Notepad.
  • Name the file as fix.reg
  • Change the Save as Type to All Files
  • and Save it on the desktop

Your Java Runtime Environment is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5, The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save it to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially any web browsers.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u5-windowsi586.exe to install the newest version.

Yes, I can see the files as well… sorry I wasn't clear.
My computer seems to be running great, I'm not having anymore problems with new windows not opening in IE and it does seem to be faster than before.
Today, after I went through your list of things to do, I noticed:
1 That my Norton 360 is saying that my PC is not secure. Upon investigation it seems that Auto-Protect is off but I didn't turn it off… So, should I turn it back on or is it off because one of the various scanning programs, that I've ran in the last few days, turned it off to do it's thing? :wacko:
Also, 2 My Outlook Express has an error… I have copied and pasted that for you to look at. Not sure if it's something we've done or my ISP but I can't send/receive. :unsure:
And 3 3 out of the 4 other user accounts (not mine) still have the Kodak EasyShare error. It wouldn't let me copy it for you but it sounds like it has to do with the administrator rights… Maybe it is coming up because I changed the access for those four accounts to limited, they all used to be admin… not good for kids. :o

That my Norton 360 is saying that my PC is not secure. Upon investigation it seems that Auto-Protect is off but I didn't turn it off… So, should I turn it back on or is it off because one of the various scanning programs, that I've ran in the last few days, turned it off to do it's thing?

Yes, you should re-enable Auto-Protect now.

Set correct settings for files that should be hidden in Windows XP
  • Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
  • Under "Hidden files and folders" if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • If unchecked please checkHide protected operating system files (Recommended)
  • If necessary check "Display content of system folders"
  • If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Click OK

I do not believe that the Kodak errors or your email problems are a results of malware. Unfortunately, my scope doesn't go much past malware. Luckily, this is not the end of our expertise here at WhatTheTech. We have tech helpers working in other areas of this site that will be more than happy to assist with the errors that you are experiencing.

Now that your system appears to be clean, theres just a few steps I'd like you to take to prevent any future infections.
  • System restore:
    We will now clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:
    • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
    • Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
    • Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
    • Select the More options tab
    • Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.

      This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.
    Make sure you do this now, as your System Restore currently has infected files in it.

  • Keeping your Windows up-to-date is crucial to your computer's security. Please go to the Windows Update Site (using Internet Explorer) and download and install all critical updates on a regular basis.

  • Make sure you update your Anti-Virus software regularly, new viruses are being developed all the time.

  • Some more programs that it would be useful to have [OPTIONAL but RECOMMENDED]:

    Download Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5 from here
    Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

    SpywareBlaster is another real-time scanner that prevents most spyware from even being installed.
    Freely available: Download SpywareBlaster

    Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

I am very satisfied, I am still in the process of downloading and running the OPTIONAL but RECOMMENDED scanners. I don't forsee any problems with adding them to my system. If I do run into problems, you will be the first person I contact :notworthy: (via a new thread, of course).
