I guess the title pretty much sums it up. I have a Lenovo G41. It's been about 5 days now, and things just get more and more annoying. I have this banner appearing below the toolbar on IE:

Warning: possible spyware or adware infection! Click here to scan your computer for spyware and adware…

…and the trustedantivirus IE window pops up frequently and also takes over the active browser. I also get the small warning pop-ups.

Tonight a new thing happened: My wallpaper suddenly turned into a rust-colored background with a creepy skull-type graphic and a "WARNING: spyware blah blah…" in the center.

I was on the DIY Network site, and a couple things appeared in the window (not pop-ups, I believe) that appeard to be sponsored ads, but were very close to porn-content graphics. Nothing like that site really would have…

Anyway, I ran Spybot and Ad-Aware 2007, which didn't seem to help. Spybot detected a few registry things, but I don't really know enough about it to do anything… so I'm looking for help. Hopefully this information was helpful.

Here's the HijackThis log:

Thanks for any help… this site is a godsend.

hi,

lets see what combofix can dig up:

Download combofix from one of these links and save it to Desktop:

http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

as a precaution, before using combofix:

Note:Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

* Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
* Click on this link below to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
* Remember to re enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the net

link:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

2. Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.

* IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts.
* If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

3. Now double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze.
Here is the Combofix log:

I ran HJT and checked the two files, rebooted, and ran combofix. However Combofix seems to malfunction and stop running when it's writing the log file… it was still running after 11 hours… I rebooted, downloaded combofix again, and ran it again; this is the third time. I'm going to give it another hour or so, and see if it works. Otherwise, the computer seems to be running just fine.
Nope, combofix appeared to get stuck this time at stage 30, prior to preparing the log file… Can't even get the task manager to come up (ctrl+alt+del)…
hi,

forget about running combofix. between it and malwarebytes things are looking ok.
you can uninstall combofix like this:

start>run and type in combofix /u click ok
note: there is a space after the x and before the u

i think java is up to update 5 by now;

Vulnerabilities/exploits in old versions of Sun Java may be partly responsible for some infections via your browser's components

It is very important not only to keep Sun Java up to date but also to remove older versions which have security holes and can be exploited by malware.

* 1. Uninstall old versions of Sun Java via Add/Remove Programs.

* 2. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button

* 3. Reboot your PC if prompted.

Download the latest version:

Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5

Download from:
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

Done.

Update 5 is now the only JRE on the computer.

Here's an updated HJT log, for your viewing pleasure:

All seems good.

Dean
hi Dean N, ok looks good. i have some prevention tips in link below. one last thing you can do is to make a new restore point. the why and the how: One of the features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a malware infects a computer with this operating system it can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is a good idea after malware is removed. Don't do it on a regular basis. To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account. (winXP) 1. Turn off System Restore. (deletes old possibly infected restore point) On the Desktop, right-click My Computer. Click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Check Turn off System Restore. Click Apply, and then click OK. 2. Reboot. 3. Turn ON System Restore.(new restore points on a clean system) On the Desktop, right-click My Computer. Click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*. Click Apply, and then click OK, then reboot if all is good then i wish you: happy safe surfing.
