My girlfriend and I have been trying to troubleshoot this number for a while… Seems out of our leagues. A bit of help would be wonderfully appreciated.

We've been getting pop-ups upon start up. Also, we are unable to delete some desktop shortcuts (Help and Support + Windows Update). Overall lagginess of the computer and often times, when trying to alter any files (uninstall programs, kill processes, etc) the computer freezes up.

Hi! Welcome to the WTT forums.
My name is Scotty. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research.
Please be patient.

Please make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list… button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.
Here is the list you requested. Nice to meet you Scotty, and thanks for the help. Hello

If you already have Combofix, please delete that copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.

Please download Combofix from Bleeping Computer.

If you can't download it from there, please try these 2 alternative sites:

Forospyware
Geeks to Go

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet, than disable your anti-virus and any real-time anti-spyware monitors that are running.
  • Click Start>Run copy/paste or type "%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall into the Run box and click OK.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply with a new HijackThis log.
Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
Note 2:Remember to re-enable your anti-virus and anti-spyware before reconnecting to the Internet.

Hi

We now suggest that you install the Windows Recovery Console. The Windows recovery console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery mode that allows us to help you in the case that your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

[external image: Posted Image]

Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.

[external image: Posted Image]

Now close all open windows and programs, then drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it. Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console. When complete, a log named CF_RC.txt will open. Please post the contents of that log.

Please do not reboot your machine until we have reviewed the log.
CF-RC.txt as follows:

WindowsXP-KB310994-SP2-Pro-BootDisk-ENU.exe
[boot loader]
timeout=2
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons
As a side note, I installed a few countermeasures as suggested on these forums, including: ZoneAlarm Avast! SpywareBlaster SpyBot S&D Each found a few things and subsequently removed them. If you need a new list/log, let me know.
Hi Yes run Combofix again and post the new log with a new HijackThis log so I can see what is going on. It's best if refrain from self-fixing to avoid confusion. p.s I guess you are behind me timezone wise so I will have a late one tonight so we can hit this.
Sorry 'bout that, but figured, if I'm throwing all this info for ranom people to see, I might as well do what I can to protect this PC.

Hi

There is nothing really private we will see from these reports. Unless it's infected.

Question- Does any of this sound familiar to you. You have a number of open firewall ports, that I can close up if you are not familiar with them.

Disable Teatimer
First:
  • Right click Spybot in the System Tray (looks like a calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • Choose Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second:
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
  • Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • Uncheck the box labeled Resident Tea-Timer and OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Go to http://virusscan.jotti.org
Copy the following line into the white textbox:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\kfrm\kfrmm.exe
Click Submit.
Please post the results of this scan to this thread.
Do the same with the following:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\UI.inf

Remember to disconnect from the Internet before carrying out the next instruction, and to save the following script before you do.

Open Notepad - it must be Notepad, not Wordpad.
Copy the text below in the code box by highlighting all the text with your mouse and pressing Ctrl+C

KillAll::

Go to the Notepad window and click Edit > Paste
Then click File > Save
Name the file "CFScript.txt" (including the quotes)
Save the file to your Desktop

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

Hi

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto‑updating for the Viewpoint Manager ‑‑ the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):
  • Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, highlight Viewpoint Manager Service, click Remove.
  • Do the same for each Viewpoint component.

Remember to disconnect from the Internet before carrying out the next instruction, and to save the following script before you do.

Open Notepad - it must be Notepad, not Wordpad.
Copy the text below in the code box by highlighting all the text with your mouse and pressing Ctrl+C
