I'm posting this because my IE is saying I'm attempting to execute an illegal instruction, so I'm trying to cover all the bases. I'd also like to get rid of some of the "stuff" on my computer as I don't know what most of it is.

An addendum: while I'm getting rid of potential bad stuff, can I just delete the 015 and 016 things I never use? There are so many items that I may have visited once and will never use again (ie. Stoneyfield.com, makeover.ivillage). I don't see them in my control panel add/remove so how else can I get rid of them?

It may be that I'm having the problem with my computer when I access a page that contains a certain type of ad . But the problem always occurs when I restart the computer.
Thanks for any help.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thank you for your response! Here are the logs:

As for how my computer is behaving, after I posted my first HiJack log on the 22nd, I decided to start using Firefox rather than IE because I was getting too many "illegal instructions" notices which would cause IE to close. Just now after I restarted my computer (which rebooted with no problem), and opened my home page (yahoo) I got a notice that Shockwave Flash has performed an illegal action and I am urged to close Firefox immediately! So I'm thinking my problems have been related to the shockwave flash in some of the ads.
At any rate, I was using Ad-Aware but it is no longer being updated, so I use Spy-Bot. Should I use Malwarebytes Anti-Malware instead?
Thank you so much for your help!
Becky
Lets did a little deeper.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, please delete it from your desktop and download this new version . It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
——————————————————————–
  • Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • WARNING: IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts
  • Please do not re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
——————————————————————–

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish
Here you go! Glad you know what all this means because it looks like craziness to me!

I got another warning that Shockwave Flash has issued an illegal command and I should close Firefox immediately, before I did this Combofix. I don't know if it will happen again; I can't test for it because I don't know what is initiating it. Anyway, thank you for your time and expertise!
Yes, I first posted this problem in the microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6.browser newsgroup and they told me to uninstall then reinstall Adobe Flash player, which I did. I just uninstalled and installed again. It hasn't made a difference as far as the rare Shockwave Flash warnings. I'm noticing that Firefox seems to be loading in a jerky manner, for lack of a better word, and the page slightly flashes for a fraction of a second once in awhile when a new page is loading. Maybe that's just how it is; I haven't used it that long and used IE for many years. Do all those logs look ok? I appreciate the time you're taking to diagnose the problem. Becky

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
There was no Symantec Shared program to remove.

Here is the new log after "fixing" those you told me to check and rebooting:

My computer seems to run a long time before my homepage loads after rebooting; after the 'running' sound stops, new windows and sites open quickly and Firefox seems to be loading more smoothly.
I don't know if the Shockwave will still be a problem as it doesn't happen that often and I don't know what triggers it. I'll have to play around for awhile to see what happens.
Thanks LD. :)
Guess I was too quick to evaluate my computer. My pages are still loading in a strange manner…I'm seeing all the frames on the page before the actual images/words appear, particularly in Yahoo. I wasn't seeing that immediately after rebooting, as mentioned in my last post. Perhaps I'm expecting Firefox to act the same (or better) than IE and that isn't realistic. Perhaps I need to close out Firefox and empty the cache and personal data more often, or actually reboot a few times a day. Frustrating.
IE is still iffy. I'm repeatedly getting a message "Do you want to install and run Adobe Flash Player Installer?" I thought I uninstalled then reinstalled Flash Player. I'll have to go back to the instructions I got on the IE newsgroup and download the "uninstall flash_player" again because somehow that download got deleted during all the stuff we've been doing. I was told I can't just use the Add/Remove feature because it doesn't completely uninstall flash_player. I still get the occasional -IE has given an illegal instruction and will close- message when in IE. It's always on a site that has ads, such as Yahoo, msn. In Firefox I still get "The plug-in performed an illegal operation. You are strongly advised to restart Firefox." If everything else looks ok, it seems my problems are related to the Adobe Flash_player plug-in. Wish I didn't have to have it on this computer, but so many sites have ads that use the Flash_player, and that seems to be what is causing the problem. I noticed in Hotmail that some of the ads don't download and I see the html related to an ad, mentioning flash-player. So I'm going to uninstall flash-player again and see what happens.
Lets get the latest Combofix

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

    • [external image: Posted Image]
