Description of Issue:

It looks like I've got multiple infections that keep coming back. Some of the symptoms are:

1. pop-ups even though I'm using a Google Toolbar blocker
2. Internet properties/Privacy - the infection keeps resetting my cookies setting to "allow all cookies" even after I set it to block all cookies.
3. On my wifes login (I'm on XP with 3 logins set up) when she clicks on the internet shortcut from the desktop or start menu she's taken to internet properties instead of a web browser
4. Norton keeps showing a warning that it has blocked w32Trats, this was happening pretty frequently
5. when I start up the computer I am getting error messages like:

#1
"Windows cannot find 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkhhf.exe'. Make sure you typed
the name correctly, and then try again. To search for file, click the Start
button, and then click Search.

#2
Could not load or run 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkhhf.exe'specified in the
registry. Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference to it
in the registry.

I am running Norton Antivirus but that didn't seem to get rid of the problem.

So far I have:

1. Run Norton Antivirus scan
2. Installed Adaware and ran a scan. The scan found and removed the following:
-revsci.net
-mediaplex.com
-advertising.com
-specficclick.net
-2o7.net
-takoda.net
-statcounter.com
-edge.ru4.com
3. Installed and ran the ATF cleaner as recommended in the before you get started thread. It freed 749.246 MB
4. Installed Spybot and ran a scan. It found and fixed the following:
-Virumonde 4 entries
-Altnet
-Microsoft.Windows.SecurityCenter_disabled
-MyWay.MyBar 2 entries
-Yazzle
-DoubleClick
5. Ran a hijackthis scan and below is the scan

Welcome to the Forums.

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear. So lets do this to the end!

  • All hijackthis logs I ask for should be done in normal mode ( not safe mode)
  • These logs should be done last after you have followed my instructions in the previous post.

Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

One of the reasons your log has gotten skipped was because you have replied to your own topic.
Our helpers look for replies with 0 (zero) responses. Just something to keep in mind next time.
But let's hope next time never comes.

1. Download Combo fix from one of these locations.
* IMPORTANT !!! Place combofix.exe on your Desktop

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

2. Click start/run and copy and Paste this in exactly using the picture below for reference:

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

[external image: Posted Image]

3. Combo will begin to run DO NOTHING while this is happeneing.
  • It will kill a few processes and disconnect you from the internet.
  • If by chance it stops prematurly you can re-establish your internet connection by restarting your computer.
  • This needs to be done so the program can work most efficiently for you.
Do not attempt to use the internet or anything else while it's doing its job for you.

If when it's completed you can not get on the internet just reboot the computer

Post the log from comboFix for me located in
c:\comboFix.txt

Hi Bob, not sure if these are helpful but when the system rebooted after the combofix I received the following warning: "Error loading C:\Windows\System32\oitauafq.dll" also the time in the system trat changed to 24 hour "military" time. The combofix and hjt logs are in my precious post. Thanks, Dan
Don't worry to much about those warnings. So far they all been about malware that we gotten rid of partially. By the time were done there will be no more warnings.
But I would like you to report any warnings like that you do receive.

The clock was changed by Combofix.
Combofix changes a few things for it's own benefit. When we are done we will set everything back as it was.

You need to update SunJava for security reasons.
Updating Java:
Download the latest version of
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4

  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4
… allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. It should have the [external image: Posted Image] icon next to it.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe
    to install the newest version.

_____________________________________
We now suggest that you install the Windows Recovery Console.
The Windows recovery console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery mode that allows us to help you
in the case that your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

[external image: Posted Image]

Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.

[external image: Posted Image]

Now close all open windows and programs, then drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.
Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.
When complete, a log named CF_RC.txt will open. Please post the contents of that log.

Great news ! [external image: Posted Image]

Your log now appears to be clean.

Lets do a few things to tidy up.

Go to start > run and copy and paste this in the field:

ComboFix /u

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the
system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Download and Install a HOSTS File
A Hosts file is a plain text file which prevents your computer from connecting to malware and spyware sites by redirecting the connection request to 127.0.0.1, which is your local address. If you use a proxy server, or if you are on AOL, be sure to read the special instructions.
You can download the MVPS Hosts File and see a HOSTS file tutorial here :
This website also contains useful tips, and links to other resources and utilities.

The infections you had was Vundo

Safe and Happy Surfing. :)
Bob, I can't even begin to thank you for your time, professionalism, and expertise. I will start by donating to this site so that you can continue to help others. It would have cost me quite a bit to have a service reformat my machine. I'll run these last few task when I get home from work tonight and post one last time to close the loop. Seeking a little advice on protection. I'm running Norton Antivirus - it seems to really drag my system down (although that could have been from the infections) and obviously didn't catch this infection. Is there a system out there that those in the know use to protect their machines, or a combo? Would Spybot running with adaware work? Looking for a good, self updating that offers good protection without taking up a lot of resources. Thanks again
First off let me thank you for the donation your offering. :notworthy: We appreciate that very much.

Would Spybot running with adaware work

Short answer = no.

They wouldn't hurt to have on board. But that's far from the end of it. Neither one of those is an anti virus program. Well , adaware has an anti virus but I don't think that's what your asking about. Youi must have an anti virus program and a firewall both are the front lines of your protection.

Let me list a few good free anti virus programs that use less resources. ( easier on your machine) .
Now keep in mind you should never run 2 anti virus programs together. Key word there being anti virus. Not anti spyware. Many anti spyware programs will run just fine along side anti VIRUS programs. But never 2 anti virus programs together.
So you will have to uninstall Nortons through add/remove programs before installing one of the others.

Now that I've probably totally confused you.

Do it like this: Download the one your going to upgrade to.

Don't install it just yet.

Avast << this one has to be registed on the same page. It's fast and easy.

Avira AntiVir Personal Edition Classic

AVG FREE

Personally I like/use this one but it's only a 30 days trial. Then you have to pay for it.

Estes Nod32

Next .
Physically disconnect from the internet.

Now uninstall Norton's through add/remove programs.

If Nortons gives you problems uninstalling .
Reconnect to the internet.

go to here
Download the appropiate tool for you norton product as described by year..

Disconnect from the internet and run the tool we just downloaded.

Then go ahead and install the new anti virus program
and reconnect to the internet.

The reason for doing it this way is that your not connected to the internet for a minute without some sort of protection.

Now with that done you should also have a firewall installed.

A few words on Microsofts firewall in XP . It only works in one direction. Incoming.
That means if something gets by it ( and it happens) you would never know it was trying
to contact the internet.
Example: A bad program installs itself. You would never know it was contacting the internet.
Downloading other nasties and so forth.

If you decide to run one of these you should be certain Microsofts firewall is disabled.
To disable it.

I will list a few free firewalls for you. These are good (free) firewalls:

Never run 2 firewalls together. They will interfere with each other.
So just download and install one!

Comodo Fairly simple to use

Sunbelt Personal Firewall

With those improvements and a few of the other helpfulls I mentioned above you should be more than safe.
Take note of installing the hosts file, and using site hound. Together both of these will keep you off most sites that carry not only the infection you had gotten but others as well.
Good protection starts with good safe surfing habits. There isn't any one program out there that will protect you from everything.

Let me know how you get on with it.
Hi Bob, Thanks again for the advice. I removed Nortons, installed Avast anti-virus and just finished installing Comodo Firewall. In the initial scan from Avast it found minubug.transporter.dll and win32:adaware-gen In the initial firewall scan it found: Unknown Malware (Dirty)(ID=4b543) Application Win.32.PowerReg (ID=ox2off9) I ran the fix for both programs to remove these. I'm not sure if you'd be able to help out with this. I think I might have messed something when I uninstalled Norton. I uninstalled the main Nortons app from the Remove Programs application. I then removed a couple of Symantec programs that supported Nortons. One of them (Live Update) wouldn't uninstall because it said it was being used by another program so I re-connected to the internet (I had been disconnected during the removal) and downloaded the Norton Remover. It removed it but during the removal it prompted me to put a disc in the disc drive. I cancelled out but now I've been getting prompted to insert a disc. The specific prompt is: Back-Up Dell-Installed Programs and then I hit cancel and it gives me an error 1706 If that's the price for getting rid of that garbage so be it but if there's a way to get rid of that that would be great. Thanks, Dan
