Hello!
I have been reading through your forums and i realize that i need some HELP!!! I keep having pop-ups and in particular one called setthetrend.com keeps popping up. I have run ad-aware se, and spybot search & destroy, but neither seems to fix it. I have seen other users bring up this same problem and you seem to have walked them through the removal successfully. I would really appreciate your help!

Here is my HJT log:

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Unless informed of in advance, failure to post replies within 5 days will result in this thread being closed.

Hi giambino

I'm Gary R, I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • Remember, absence of symptoms does not mean the infection is all gone.
If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • Please note you'll need to have Administrator privileges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)

Looks like you've got one of the Vundo varients, before we get down to cleaning things up there's a couple of things I need you to do for me.

First

The version of Vundo you have hides from HJT and we need to re-name it so we can see what we're up against.
  • Go to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis
  • Rename HijackThis.exe to FredFlintstone.exe
  • Run a new scan with HJT (FredFlintstone) and send me the new log please.

Then

Before we go any further, I need you to install Recovery Console to your computer.

This is purely a precautionary procedure, but it is essential.

There are some new infections going round that damage your ability to boot if they are removed. Whilst I don't see signs of them on your computer, it's always easier to be cautious now than sorry later.

Recovery Console gives us the ability to recover your computer if such a thing happens.

Nothing is going to change on your computer other than we're going to install Recovery Console.

  • Download combofix.exe by sUBs to your Desktop (it must be in this location).
  • Alternate Download
  • If you already have a previous version, delete it and download a new version.
  • Do not attempt to run Combofix other than in the method described below.
  • Go to Microsoft's website
  • Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Download the file & save it as it's originally named, to your Desktop.

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Now close all open windows and programs, then drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.
  • Follow the prompts to start ComboFix.
  • When prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install Microsoft Recovery Console.
  • When complete, a log named CF_RC.txt will open.
  • Please post the contents of that log.

Please do not shutdown or reboot your machine until we have reviewed the logs.
Hi Gary…thank you for helping me out…
i did as you said…here is the new HJT ( Fred Flintstone ) log:

When I did the second part you requested my McAfee popped up and said:

"McAfee has blocked a potentially unwanted program on your computer

Name: RemAdm-ProcLaunch!171
Location: C:\327882R2FWJFW\psexec.cfexe

I'm not sure what to do about it so I'll leave the popup open until further instructions……

Hi giambino,

OK, your new HJT log confirms the Vundo (I just like to be sure), and by the looks of thing McAfee hasn't prevented the preliminary install of Recovery Console.

Your Boot.ini file looks good (that's what CF_RC.txt shows me).

Reboot your computer to complete the install of Recovery Console.

When your computer boots up from now on, there will be a brief halt where you have an option to boot into normal mode or Recovery Console, after 2 seconds if you do nothing it will continue to boot into normal mode as usual. This shouldn't really inconvenience you, but we will have the option of booting to Recovery Console if you ever have problems with normal boot.

Once you've re-booted.

Run a scan with Combofix

  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • Note: Combofix will automatically disconnect your Internet connection when it runs, do not reconnect it.
  • When finished, it will
    • Produce a log for you. (it can also be found at C:\Combofix.txt)
    • Restore your Internet connection.
  • Post the log in your next reply please.
  • Now run a new HJT (FredFlintstone) scan and send me the log from that as well please.
IMPORTANT
  • Do not use your computer while Combofix is running.
  • Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.
  • If you've lost your Internet connection when Combofix has completely finished, re-start your computer to restore it.

If you have any problems with these instructions, a detailed Tutorial for how to use Combofix is available here.

There will be more work to do, but I won't know quite what until I see your new logs.
OK Gary Here are the logs you requested:

The buttons are there - you just can't see them! Click on the zoom button (bottom, right of the window) and change it from 100% to 75%. You should now see the buttons. Reset to 100% once the license has been accepted.

Summary of the logs I need from you in your next post:

My apologies, looks like I missed a couple of items, I also forgot to disable Spybot S&D Teatimer and as a result it's replaced the items we removed with HJT.

So, looks like we've got some more work to do.

  • Double click FindAWF.exe to launch the programme.
  • A window will open, click Enter.
  • A new window will open with a range of options.
    • Press 3 then Enter to select the Remove bak folders option.
    • Copy all the text in the quote box below, and paste it into the window which will open.
    C:\PROGRA~1\SONYER~1\MOBILE2\APPLIC~1\BAK
    C:\PROGRA~1\ALARM\BAK
    • FindAWF will now process the files listed.
    • When finished a file awf.txt will open.
    • Copy/Paste the contents of that file in your next post please.
  • Close FindAWF

Next

We need to disable Spybot S&D Teatimer.

To disable Spybot S&D TeaTimer

First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Now

Run a scan with HJT and when finished check the following items (if found).

R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {07C7156E-D651-4ACC-9AD3-498C916E9651} - (no file)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {82A984AD-78E9-4E39-ADE1-73AB40776E81} - (no file)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C24FB14D-D2B0-4601-8DFD-827FDCC20259} - (no file)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {CFACEAC4-AA78-48CF-942F-58EAEF6D7366} - (no file)

Now close all open windows and click Fix Checked to remove them.

Reboot your computer

Now run a new scan with HJT and post me the log please.

Summary of the logs I need from you in your next post:
  • Find AWF log
  • New HJT log

Please post each log separately to prevent them being cut off by the forum post size limiter.

Well your latest HJT log looks good now.

Only one item of concern on your Kaspersky log. The bulk of the "infected" files are the encypted backups that Combofix made, they're of no risk but we will clean them out in due course. Also your System Restore points are infected, but provided you don't do a restore they too cannot re-infect you. We will of course clean them out before we finish, but I like to do that last just in case we have any unforeseen problems (I'm not expecting any), better an infected RP than no RP.

Seems one of the bak folders doesn't want to be deleted, so we'll try a different method to get rid of it (and clean out the item found in your Kaspersky log).

Download OTMoveIt2 by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
