[Resolved] computer acting funny

My task manager will not open or close correctly somtimes and i have just used this site to do a lot of work on my laptop and i share lots of files between the two so i would like to just have this unit checked out

A. I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager – the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.


Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware
I STRONGLY recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):

1. Click Start, then Settings, then click Control Panel.
2. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
3. In Add or Remove Programs, Remove the Viewpoint component
4. Do the same for each Viewpoint component.



B. Your system is infected with what we commonly call a WareOut infection. This infection monitors your browsing habits and distributes the data back to the author's servers for analysis. This also prompts advertising popups.

Please download FixWareout from the following site:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Please post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log.

after running fixit i had to go in and follow the instructions because my internet would not connect.

A. We need to temporarily disable one of your security programs so that it will not interfere with our fix. Please remember to re-activate it once we are all finished.

WINDOWS DEFENDER
  • Click Start > Programs > Windows Defender or launch from the system tray icon.
  • Click on Tools & Settings > Options.
  • Under Real-time protection options, uncheck the "Real-time protection" check box.
  • Click Save.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Security > Windows Defender, at the bottom of the Window Defenders page uncheck under Administrator Options "use Windows Defender" and then Save.
  • (When we are done, you can re-enable Defender using the same steps but this time place a check next to "Turn on real-time protection" check box.)


B. Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

  • First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

    • Go to start>control panel>folder options>view
    • Choose to "show hidden files and folders,"

  • Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

    How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode


    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
    • Press Enter.

  • Using Windows Explorer (Windows Key + E), locate the following file, and DELETE it (if still present):

    C:\Windows\ALCMTR.EXE<==File

  • Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE


C. Using Internet Explorer, please do a Kaspersky Online Scan

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure as follows:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will provide a report if your system is infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.

  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop and post it in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Apparently we are dealing with a new strain of an old infection. Please do the following in the exact order as directed:


A. This is the only infected item from the Kaspersky scan. Please DELETE it:

C:\My Downloads\New Folder (2)\son house.wmv<==File


B. I need to check on more access points to your system than those that are checked by HijackThis.

Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE directly to your Desktop.

Note: If you already have a current version of ComboFix on your machine, please DELETE it from your desktop before downloading the newest version.

Go to [external image: Posted Image] -> Run -> copy/paste the following single line command in the runbox & click OK

  • ComboFix will automatically start. Any monitoring programs will be shut down like your antivirus, antispyware programs for example.
  • ComboFix may restart your computer, this is normal.
  • When finished, it will produce a log, ComboFix.txt.
  • Please post ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

I appreciate all the help I work as a firefighter and this is my desktop computer so i may not be on tomarrow to follow up on this but i will be back thursday evening

A. Now lets check some settings on your system.

* Enter your Control Panel and double-click on Network Connections
* Then right click on your Default Connection
o Usually Local Area Connection for Cable and DSL
* Left click on Properties
* Double-Click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item
* Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS Servers Automatically
* Do that for every connection listed in network conntections
* Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.

B. Make sure to reboot and post back a new HJT log by using Add Reply

I followed directions for all connections except the modem/dialup
it would not open the properties window would only show the hourglass and then nothing

C. Using Internet Explorer, please do a Kaspersky Online Scan

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure as follows:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will provide a report if your system is infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
