Good evening HijackThis friends,
This is a follow up to the log I previously posted on 02/15. The most obvious indication of the problem is the warning pasted across the middle of my desktop as described below:

"Warning: Spyware threat has been detected on your PC.
Your computer has several fatal errors due to spyware activity.
It is strongly recomended to install an antispyware software to close all security vulnerabilities.
Antispyware software helps protect your PC against spyware and other security threats.
CLICK HERE TO SCAN YOUR PC FOR SPYWARE…"

I am experiencing extremely slow response times during internet activities. I am unable to access Microsoft Task Manager and receive an error message that reads: "Task manager has been disabled by your administrator." I am unable to run scans using 'Ad-Aware 2007' in other than 'Safe Mode' without the system 'crashing' and rebooting.

In' Safe Mode', the scans and removal of infected files using 'Ad-Aware 2007' are yielding up to 30 infected files from Malware to Spyware, however, each time I scan again there are more infected files found. A series of bogus 'pop-up' warnings featuring various types of infected files contain a common link to a bogus website entitled 'TOP RATED SPYWARE REMOVERS' via Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Any help you might possible provide to aid me in removing these files from my computer would be greatly appreciated. I have included my previous log below for your review. Thank you for your assistance.

Hi jffreyalln

I'm Gary R, I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • Remember, absence of symptoms does not mean the infection is all gone.
If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • Please note you'll need to have Administrator privileges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)

It's not too surprising that you've picked up an infection, as I see no sign of a Firewall or Anti-Virus programme on your computer. Both are essential if you're to keep free from infection. I'll give you a couple of links for Free firewalls and AV programmes shortly, for the time being let's get started on your infection.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save it to your Desktop. (Do not run it yet)

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) and extract (unzip) it to your Desktop. (Do not run it yet)

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program. (Do not run it yet)

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please boot your computer into Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account (as long as it is an account with Administrator privileges).
Once in Safe Mode
  • Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
  • Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2, then press Enter.
  • You will be prompted with: Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?
  • Type Y, then press Enter, to remove the Desktop background and clean infected registry keys.
  • The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected.
  • You may be prompted to replace the infected file.
  • If prompted, type Y, then press Enter.
  • The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
  • A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process.
  • Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply. The report can also be found at C:\rapport.txt
Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Clean out your Temp files.
  • 1st Ensure your Internet Browser is closed.
  • Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Check the following boxes:
    • Windows Temp
    • Current User Temp
    • All Users Temp
    • Temporary Internet Files
    • Prefetch
    • Recycle Bin
    • Java Cache
  • The rest are optional - if you want to remove the lot, check Select All.
  • Now click Empty Selected.
  • When you get the Done Cleaning message, click OK.

Run a scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Click on the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware icon to launch the programme.
    • Click the Updates tab.
    • Click Check for Updates and allow the programme to download the latest definitions.
  • Click the Scanner tab.
    • Check Perform Quick Scan.
    • Click Scan and wait for the scan to complete.
    • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results.
    • Ensure all items are checked then click Remove Selected.
    • A box will pop-up telling you that files have been quarantined.
    • A log will pop-up.
  • Post the log in your next reply please.
You can also access the log by doing the following
  • Click on the Logs tab.
  • Click on the log at the bottom of those listed to highlight it.
  • Click Open

Open the SmitfraudFix folder again
  • Double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
  • Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3, then press Enter.
  • You will be asked to "Restore Trusted Zone" click Y.
(Note: If you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.)

Now would be a good time to install a Firewall and an AV programme.

Install a Firewall and Anti-Virus Programme from the Free offerings below (or one of your own choice). Please note, only install ONE of each, more than one will not give you more protection, but will conflict, causing all kinds of problems for you.

Anti-Virus
AVG
Anti-Vir
Firewalls
Comodo
Agnitum Outpost Firewall

Now please post the following logs.
  • c:\rapport.txt
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log
  • A new HijackThis log
Please post each log separately so they don't get cut off by the forum post size limiter.

Good evening Gary, I attempted to follow your instructions and unknowingly selected the wrong option when completing the 'Smitfraud.fix option #2 - Clean' step. I proceeded to exit Safe Mode and had inadvertantly went into a system backup that gave me an option to reset back to previous date. Not knowing what date to choose, I first went back to most recent highlighted date, 02/18, and when system rebooted the spyware warning was still pasted to the desktop. Thinking that I had erred in judgement, I repeated the the 'Smitfraud.fix option #2 - Clean' step again and went once more into a system backup that gave me the option to go back to previous date, this time choosing 02/02. I no longer had the warning on the desktop nor the bogus pop-ups, however, I now encountered another problem in having reset to a previous desktop with an icon that led to a previous version of my SBC server that had since been removed. I had to then reload my SBC server, manage to complete the remainder of other steps that you had outlined, download the anti-virus and firewall software, and have at last forwarded the three logs you requested. I regret that I had unintentionally diverted from your instructions. Please review the logs above and advise on what couse of action to take from this point. Thank you very much for all of the guidance you've provided. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Jeff
OK Jeff, looking much better.

However, there's still a little cleaning up to do, and because of the problems you had I'd like to run another scanner over your computer to make sure we haven't missed anything. No worries about the detour ;) these things happen from time to time, but best to make sure nothing's slipped by us because of it.

First

Run a scan with HJT and when finished check the following items (if found).

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…/search/ie.html

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…/search/ie.html

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com

Now close all open windows and click Fix Checked to remove them.

(Be sure you've got all the entries with http://red.clientapps)

Next

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: You must be using Internet Explorer as your browser as it will be necessary to install an Active X component to your computer.

Important If you have previously used Kaspersky Online Scanner (before 8th Aug 2006), you will have to uninstall the old version using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel before you can use the new version.

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings.
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK.
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post please.

Note: The Kaspersky online scanner is not yet fully compatible with IE7. You may get returned to a window without the Accept/Decline buttons after allowing the ActiveX control. The buttons are there - you just can't see them! Click on the zoom button (bottom, right of the window) and change it from 100% to 75%. You should now see the buttons. Reset to 100% once the license has been accepted.

Finally

Run a new scan with HJT and send me the log please.

Summary of the logs I need from you in your next post:

  • Kaspersky log
  • New HJT log

Please post each log separately to prevent them being cut off by the forum post size limiter.
Good evening Gary, I completed the first step by running HJT scan and removing the six items you specified, however, I wasn't able to dornload the Kapersky Online Scanner due to the following failure notification: Failed to load Kaspersky Online Scanner ActiveX control! You must have administrative rights on this computer; you also must have the IE security settings to the Medium level. Apparently the user set up on my laptop doesn't have administrative rights. The only way I know to log in as administrator is in the 'Safe Mode'. I don't know how to change IE security settings to the Medium level. Please advise on how to proceed. Thanks for your patience and assistance. Jeff
Good evening Gary,
I solicited some advice from my son to be able to check users for administrative rights and determined the user is set up as an administrator. I created a new user, adjusted internte security levels to medium, and attempted to download Kapersky Online Scanner from Internet Exporer. Again, access failed indicated by the same limitations as described in the last log. Perhaps there is something I am not perceiving correctly.

Please review latest HJT scan below. Thanks for your help.

OK, lets try something else.

I've known Kaspersky do this before, for some reason it takes a dislike to the way some computers are set up. It's not worth the bother (or time) required to find out what particular setting on your computer is upsetting it, it's easier just to use another method to get a scan.

  • Create a folder on your desktop called Sysclean.
  • Download Sysclean Package to the folder you made.
  • Download Virus Pattern File (Official Pattern Release) to your desktop. This file will be called lptXXX.zip (XXX represents the version number)
  • Unzip lptXXX.zip and you'll get the file lpt$vpn.XXX. Read here how to unzip/extract properly.
  • Move the lpt$vpn.XXX to the Sysclean folder you created on your desktop.
  • Open the sysclean folder and doubleclick sysclean.com
  • Check: Automatically clean or delete detected files.
  • Click scan.
Open your sysclean folder and copy and paste the contents of sysclean.log in your next reply please.
Good morning Gary,
I have experienced difficulties completing steps above. I was able to download Sysclean to a folder created on my desktop without a hitch. I downloaded the lpt$vpn.119 to my destop and added to the Sysclean folder.

I attempted to unzip lpt$vpn.119 utilizing the instructions to open a zipped file that you provided. However, Windows was unable to open lpt$vpn.119 file. I attempted to run the Sysclean scan with Aoutomatically Clean Infected Files checked.

During the Sysclean scan, AntiVir detected a virus Trojan Horse and requested what to do with this file. I selected delete this file. I observed the readout screen during the scan to note that alot of files scanned in Windows/System 32, at the end of scanning each section, there appeared at the end of each string.

Sysclean scan completed and I selected View the Log. I wasn't able to Select All and Copy. I checked the log to learn that 0 viruses had been found. I opened the Sysclean folder and could not find the file sysclean.log.

For lack of the log you requested, I have provided another HJT log. Please advise on what progress you feel we have made. Again, as always, I really appreciate all your efforts and regret the shortcomings on completing the tasks on this end.
