hi kaazzaa,

first we will stop this process then get it checked out:

before you use hjt you should disable any real time protection components you have running there is a list here;

http://www.landzdown.com/index.php/topic,422.0.html

start HJT, click "Do a system scan only" put a checkmark beside the items below, close all windows and click "fix checked".

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [msptlg] C:\WINDOWS\ptlg.exe

to show all files do this:
FOr XP: on the desktop double click my computer,go to tools>folder options>view> then select "show hidden files and folders", then UNcheck "hide protected operating system files " also UNcheck "hide extensions for known file types" click apply to all folders, apply then ok

go to start>run and type in–> services.msc,<–in the list of services that comes up look for>> ptlg

right click on it and select properties.
under the general tab:
the path to the .exe should be:C:\WINDOWS\system32\ptlg.exe

make sure that the service status is: Stopped, if not click the Stop button

and the Startup type is: disabled, if not change it to disable
click apply, then ok

reboot computer
—————————————-

navigate here
C:\WINDOWS\
and see if you can find this file:
ptlg.exe

if so go to this website below and using the browse button find the file on your computer and upload it using the send button
you can copy/paste the results it generates in your next reply.

hi kaazzaa,

ok good. if all is good we can make a new restore point. the why and how:

One of the features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a malware infects a computer with this operating system it can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is agood idea after malware is removed.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore. (deletes old possibly infected restore point)

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.

Click Properties.

Click the System Restore tab.

Check Turn off System Restore.

Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.(new restore points on a clean system)

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.

Click Properties.

Click the System Restore tab.

UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.

Click Apply, and then click OK, then reboot

check your java version, i think the latest is 1.6.03

Vulnerabilities in old Sun Java versions may be partly responsible for Vundo/Winfixer infections.

It is very important not only to keep Sun Java up to date but also to remove older versions which have security holes and can be exploited by malware.

* 1. Uninstall old versions of Sun Java via Add/Remove Programs.

* 2. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button

* 3. Reboot your PC if prompted.

Download the latest version:

Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3

The full internal version number for this update release is 1.6.0_03-b05 ("b" means "build"). The external version number is 6u5.
