To Whom it May Concern:

Since today I've been having numerous popup problems after I've installed this new active-x control. Immediately, numerous popups started to come up and these system performance monitor warnings from the small icons on the bottom right hand corner of my desktop started to pop up. Afterwards, I realized I've made a terrible mistake and purchased PC Tool's Spyware Doctor with the anti-virus attachment. It removed a lot of the spyware/malware on my computer. However, I still have these problems. How should I fix this problem?

Thank you for your time. I really appreciate it!!

Hi Pakman,

Are you sure it was an ActiveX control which caused the problem and do you know which site you were on when it was installed?

Temporarily disable Windows Defender:
  • Right-click on the Windows Defender icon in the system tray and select Open
  • Click on Tools from the top menu, then press Options
  • Scroll down to Real-time protection options, uncheck Use real-time protection and press Save
  • Close Windows Defender

Clean with MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
  • Please download the Installer to your Desktop from here:
    http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to both of these options:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When finished, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to your Desktop, and post the contents in your reply.
  • The log can also be found here if you need it:
    • Start->All Programs->Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware->Logs

Now open HijackThis, select Open the Misc Tools section
Press the Open Uninstall Manager… button, then press Save list…
Save the Uninstall log to your Desktop and include a copy in your next response.
Now press Back and Scan and then Save log to create and save a new HijackThis log.

Once complete, please post the Malwarebytes Antimalware report, the uninstall list and a new HijackThis log.
thx silver for the help i followed your steps but for some reason after i had installed MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware, I can't run the program… it says: "An error occurred. Please report the following error code to the Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware support team. Error code: 701 (0)" what should i do??
Hi Pakman,

I'm sorry to hear you had difficulty!
Please try this:

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C: ), and launch from there.

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user. Further info is available here.

Then, open HijackThis, select Open the Misc Tools section
Press the Open Uninstall Manager… button, then press Save list…
Save the Uninstall log to your Desktop and include a copy in your next response.
Now press Back and Scan and then Save log to create and save a new HijackThis log.

Once complete, please post the SmitfraudFix report, the uninstall list and a new HijackThis log.
This is the smitfraud report:

THX for your help once again =)
Hi Pakman,

Please print/save a copy of the following instructions because we will be using Safe Mode, during which time you won't have access to the internet.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

————————————————————————

Next press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command (it's one long command) into the box and press OK:

reg export hklm\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\uninstall "%userprofile%\desktop\export.txt"

A file should appear on your Desktop called export.txt - it will be quite large so please attach it to your next response - let me know if you have any trouble doing this.

————————————————————————

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, look down the list for these items and remove them:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Java™ 6 Update 2
Java™ 6 Update 3
Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

These are out of date and now a security risk, you can get the latest update (version 6 update 4) from here

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using safe and free alternatives such as VLC Media Player.
To remove, open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs and remove these entries:

Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only)
Viewpoint Media Player

You have Azureus and eMule, P2P file sharing programs installed on your computer. These programs do not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but peer-to-peer file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I recommend you remove them, but of course the choice is yours.
You can remove Azureus and eMule via Add/Remove Programs.

————————————————————————

Once complete, please post the new SmitfraudFix report and a new HijackThis log. Also please attach the export.txt file to your post using the controls under the post entry box.
Here is the smitfraud fix log:

Also, I am having trouble uploading the "export" file
it is larger than the max. single upload size allowed on this site
so, i uploaded it to a yousendit link

export file
Hi Pakman,

That file was bigger than I expected, great idea to use YouSendIt!

Please open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {E0E899AB-F487-11D5-8D29-0050BA6940E3} - (no file)

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Make hidden/system files and folders visible:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Show hidden files and folders
UNCHECK the Hide extensions for known file types option
UNCHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Click Yes to confirm and press OK

Use Windows Explorer (right-click Start, select Explore) to find and delete the following folder:

C:\Program Files\NetProject

If the folder is not present then don't worry but if you have trouble deleting it, please let me know in your next response.

Then please do an online scan with Kaspersky:
Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer using this link:
http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/d…kavwebscan.html
  • Click Accept and the web scanner will begin to load
  • If a yellow warning bar appears at the top of the browser, click it and choose Install ActiveX Control
  • You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Install
  • If you are prompted about another ActiveX control called Kaspersky Online Scanner GUI part then allow it to be installed also.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log. Also, let me know how your computer is running.
overall my computer has gotten a lot better than before
the popups stopped and it seems as if most of the symptoms are gone
the only problem is that i still feel as if my computer has gotten a lot slower than before
is it possible that there are still other viruses/malware that is infecting my computer??

Hi Pakman,

At this stage your machine looks pretty good so it's unlikely to be a malware problem. If after we're finished you're still not happy with the performance of your machine I'll give you instructions to get further help.

————————————————————————

Please click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Press OK and Yes to confirm

————————————————————————

Next press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command (it's one long command) into the box and press OK:

cmd /c dir "c:\popup[?].htm" /a /s >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt"

A black box will open and a file will appear on your Desktop called look.txt.
Please wait until the black box closes before opening look.txt and post the contents in your next response.

————————————————————————

Please download F-Secure Blacklight to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As…, select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Double click fsbl.exe to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
  • It will create the fsbl-xxxxxxx.log on your desktop containing a list of all items found.
  • Do not choose to rename any because legitimate items can also be present.
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.

————————————————————————

Once complete, please post the look.txt output, the Blacklight report and a new HijackThis log.

when i did the blacklight search, it told me that it didn't find any hidden files
Hi Pakman,

OK we'll try removing those files as follows:

Open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad into the box and press OK
Select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.
Then, copy/paste the contents of the following code box into Notepad:
@echo off
del /f /q "c:\Documents and Settings\Guest\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\YLRK50B6\popup[1].htm" >> results.txt 2>>&1
del /f /q "c:\Documents and Settings\Jessie Pak\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\QL6OPNAE\popup[1].htm" >> results.txt 2>>&1
del /f /q "c:\Documents and Settings\Jessie Pak\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\QL6OPNAE\popup[2].htm" >> results.txt 2>>&1
dir "c:\popup[?].htm" /a /s >> results.txt 2>>&1
del runme.bat
Select File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "runme.bat" (you MUST type the quotes)
Locate runme.bat on your Desktop and double-click it.
A black box should open and close after a short time, this is normal.
Another text file should appear on your Desktop called results.txt, do not open it until the black box has closed.
Post the contents of this file in your next response.
No, that's good because the files can no longer be found :) some important final steps:

You should now delete fsbl.exe, SmitfraudFix.exe and it's folder SmitfraudFix from your Desktop.
Also, please open Symantec Antivirus and clean out the quarantine area - there are a number of malware files there.

Re-hide hidden/system files and folders:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Do not show hidden files and folders
CHECK the Hide extensions for known file types option
CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Press OK

Re-enable Windows Defender real-time protection:
  • Right-click on the Windows Defender icon in the system tray and select Open
  • Click on Tools from the top menu, then press Options
  • Scroll down to Real-time protection options, check Use real-time protection and press Save
  • Close Windows Defender

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up… and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

If all the above went well, I think your machine is now clean of malware :)
If you are still having performance problems now, I do not think malware is the cause, so I recommend you post in the Microsoft Windows forum here at What the Tech to get more help. The experts there specialize in these types of problems and I'm sure they'll resolve the problems swiftly for you.

Here are some tips to help you keep your computer clean:

Operating system vulnerabilities can easily be exploited by malware so please ensure your operating system is automatically kept up to date by using Windows Update:
Go to Start->Control Panel->Automatic Updates
Select Automatic and select a suitable schedule

You should consider installing a Personal Firewall program. Even if you are behind a NAT router, I recommend you use firewall software as it will improve the security of your computer by monitoring and controlling outbound connections to the internet as well as inbound. There are various free packages available, one I can recommend is Comodo:

Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins orActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.
