Hi there -

I'm sure that you will help me through this - it is one of the only times I have not been able to solve one of these issues on my own (maybe I'm slipping in my old age :pullhair: ).

Anyway, I'm running Windows XP SP2 on a Sony Viao PCV-RS530G. I normally run a very clean system, including a hardware router and Norton Internet Security 2007. Yes, I'm paying the price of speed degradation for what I thought was security. I also run Yahoo pop-up blocker, and try to scan frequently with Ad-Aware and SpyBot.

Another user was using my computer, and somehow I ended up with what they said was SpyShredder. I did not see the download myself, but have been trying to fix it for about a week. Whatever this is appears to be extremely smart about blocking all of my attempts to remove it, including disabling Norton Autoprotect, disabling Yahoo anti-spy defnintions updates, etc…

Also, when I try to search for items on the internet, I am hijacked through www.webcry.com to other search results.

I could really use some help in deciphering what the HJT logs say, and how to go about getting whatever this is out of my system. The fifth entry under O16 shows a spyshredder entry, but I am not sure what to do with it to avoid causing more damage.

One last thing before I post my logs - I have also followed all of the recommended first steps before getting to this point including downloading and running ATF Cleaner and Spybot S&D. Spybot found Couponbar and Malware alarm and removed them both. Another scan showed no issues. However, on a reboot, I am still seeing the problems.

Here is my HJT log:

Thanks for any help you can provide!

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thanks for the reply and the help. I followed all of the steps as directed. As for how my computer is performing:

My computer is slow to boot, even before running ATF cleaner.
When attempting to run Malwarebytes' Anti-malware I could not update definitions because it said I was not connected to the Internet or my firewall was not configured for Anti-malware. A reboot into Safe Mode fixed this.
I receive a Norton Internet Security error on every reboot stating "Autoprotect experienced an unexpected error 0x0000003EE", both before and after the ATF cleaner and Anti-malware.
I can run Internet Explorer and use search engines without being hijacked now.

Here is my Anti-malware log:

Thanks.

P.S. Sorry for the delay in responding. I was ready to go last night, but tried logging in with the wrong username and couldn't get in. Thought my username and display name were the same. Oops.
Lets dig a little deeper and see what else we find.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, please delete it from your desktop and download this new version . It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

Here's my usual all clean post

    Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

    %SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

    Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
    Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      • Click once on the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Note: I no longer suggest Zone Alarm

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Using IE-SPYAD to help block unwanted sites and activities

  • Winpatrol

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein
Thank you so much for all of your help. I have followed all of your advice/direction/recommendations. My system appears clean now. One question I have for you: You recommend a firewall and anti-virus software. Am I better off with one of the free versions that are out there, or should I continue with Norton Internet Security? Thanks again.

You recommend a firewall and anti-virus software. Am I better off with one of the free versions that are out there, or should I continue with Norton Internet Security?

If you're happy with Norton's then keep it. I wouldn't pay for any Anti-Virus program though because there are very good free ones.

Only use 1 AVG (anti-virus) and Firewall.

You're more then welcome.
Glad we were able to help

Peace be with you :wavey:
