I'm not a complete computer newbie, but run in fear from anything that comes close to editing a registry!

Several websites that are rather crucial to my life are mysteriously no longer accessible: amazon.com, msnbc.msn.com, msn.com, etc. After discussion with several of my more computer-literate friends who suspected a some kind of Trojan, I went to pandasecurity.com and performed the free computer scan offered there. Panda found what it called "generic malware," in a file called groove.x32 – and said it fixed it. Subsequent panda scans came up clean. I believe the damage the virus left behind, though, still needs to be repaired.

I ran ATF Cleaner, then Spybot S&D – fixing the red items. Sadly, I'm still living in an amazon-free zone. I suppose I've had the false sense of security that only a decade of Norton subscriptions could provide, and mistakenly thought it would keep me immune to computer viruses (virae?) and malware. (I feel so cheated on…)

For better or worse, I have Windows XP, Internet Explorer and Firefox, Norton Internet Security.

Oh, please help! (hijackthis logfile appended below.)

2/10/08, 3:25pm update: My computer wouldn't boot after the spybot updates, and hyjackthis scan – I had to go into safe mode and "restore" to something from yesterday. I've updated the hyjackthis scan to be current.
Regards,
Tinkrbell

Sorry about the delay in responding :(

If you still need help, Scan again with HijackThis, and copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Well, the symptoms are completely different now, and may in fact be hardware-related. I can access my beloved Amazon.com again, but it takes 10-15 attempts to boot the computer after power off. The computer won't shut down either – it gets to the "Windows is shutting down" screen, and stays there, frozen in time, forever…

It's a laptop computer, and I've tried unplugging every card and peripheral in case there was some kind of conflict, but the issue is the same.

I really appreciate your help… I've learned a lot by reading other people's posts, and I'm very grateful for the bastion of sanity in a sea of computer turmoil…

Here's the log file:

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Next:

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, please delete it from your desktop and download this new version . It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
——————————————————————–
  • Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • WARNING: IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts
  • Please do not re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
——————————————————————–

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish
Hey! It wouldn't shut down on its own after running ComboFix, but it booted up on the first try – which it hasn't done in weeks!! :banana2:

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Mr. Forum God –

The computer freezes up when I try to shut it down or boot it up… When I ask it to shut down, it appears to close everything down properly on the desktop, etc.,, but it freezes up on the "Windows is shutting down" screen. I've given it hours to complete its cycle, to no avail. Sometimes the power off / A/C button doesn't even work, and I have to unplug it (which feels like taking a friend off of life support), or remove the battery.

When I go to reboot it, it will immediately go to a softly-lit, grey screen (LCD), and the friendly little light that tells me it is accessing the hard drive will flash only twice in rapid succession, and then nevermore. It's quick – not enough time to go through its hardware checks, let alone initiate the operating system. Also, after many attempts, when it decides to grace me with a real start up, it never recognizes that it had an issue at all – never offers to start up in the dreaded Windows "safe mode." It's almost as though the computer believes it to be some personal problem of the operator's, not a computer problem at all… In short, it's in denial.

Could be worse, I suppose… it's never given me the nefarious "blue screen" of absolute failure and death.

I adore this little computer, but I feel like I'm living on borrowed time. I've backed up all of my "I can't live without it" files, and feel a new computer coming on… Last thing I want to do right now, but I go NOWHERE without my beloved laptop, and life just would be so passionless and desolate without it.

You are nothing short of an absolute hero for trying to help me… :)

Anyway, I did everything you asked me to do, am willing to do more, and here's the HijackThis file…

I'm absolutely willing to try a different anti-virus program. My Norton subscription expires soon anyway, and since it let in that horrid malware that started this whole bad dream, let's say I've lost that lovin' feeling… It was the "standard" for so many years, and I guess as other programs evolved and passed it by, I didn't reassess my protection scheme. It was conveniently bundled with firewalls, spyware protection and automatic updates – it made me feel safe, and it was all so easy (and expensive). Shame on me for not staying on the pulse of change! I am usually the tech support for the computers of several family members (who are amazingly less computer-literate than I am), so any change in strategy for virus protection will necessarily have a ripple effect across other households. Norton's stock value may be seriously compromised… I completely trust you… What do you recommend, oh master of the forum?

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment

ONLY after the above:

1.Click on Start | Settings | Control Panel
2.In the control panel double-click on Add / Remove Programs
3.Look through the list of installed programs for any item that says either "Norton" or "Symantec" or "LiveUpdate". (for example "Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition" or "Norton AntiVirus 2000")
4.For each "Norton", "Symantec", or "LiveUpdate" item, select the item and click Add / Remove. Follow the instructions, and click Yes or Yes to all when prompted.
When you are done there should be no items in the list that say "Norton", "Symantec", or "LiveUpdate".
5.Click OK to close the Add / Remove Programs window.
6.Reboot your computer if it hasn't already automatically rebooted.
7.Delete the c:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus (or c:\Program Files\Norton) folder.
8.Delete the c:\Program Files\Symantec folder.
9.Delete the c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared folder.

Mr. Forum –

So I've been meaning to ask you, are those little spikey things on your "photo" whiskers? You know, for some cute animal interest? Or are they perhaps something more sinister?… Sorry! Wrong forum!

Well, it's taken me a few days to get my computer to boot up at all, but I believe I've finally removed the last vestiges of the "Norton Suite of Nuisances." I did exactly as you recommended, and when the computer does boot up, it seems to be much quicker and responsive than even before this bad dream started…

I actually had to download a special tool from the Symantic site to get the last shards of it off…! It refused to uninstall by non-heroic means…

I really need to get the Windows IP operating system installed on this computer – you know, Windows for "Impatient People." But until that's developed…

Behavior problems continue to center around a general reluctance for the computer to shut down (must remove power source), and almost complete obstinacy when requested to boot up. I may be closer to a solution there, though… While I usually keep the volume muted to avoid annoying noises that I don't specifically request from a web page (you know who they are), I accidentally left the volume on during a recent boot up attempt. While I only got the customary blank "backlit" LCD screen, to my surprise my happy little boot-up song played! I believe the reluctance to boot up is that the computer is not reliably seeing that it has a monitor attached to it.

Since it is a laptop, the monitor is rather intrinsic to the unit, but when I connect to an external monitor, it seems to have no issue booting up at all. Still won't shut down, though… (I think it senses my fear…)

I may have to go ahead and buy a new computer (I think a new internal monitor for this one may cost the bulk of a new computer anyway), but at least I understand some of the issues with this computer, the right virus protection to have from the start, and if I ever go looking for my heart's desire again, I should keep to my own back yard – or something to that effect.

If you have any further thoughts or suggestions, please let me know.

Attached is a new HijackThis file for your amusement (and thanks so much for your genius that you have allowed me to bask in during this entire crisis):

Very beautiful art on your daughter's website (you know, in a riveting, fascinating and mildly terrifying kind of way). She must have her mother's ears… the better to hear you with, probably… Everything was going fine until I followed your instruction to REBOOT. (A lot of cuss-word potential associated with that step.) It's taken days to coax it back to life. Nonetheless, the LSPfix said that it found 'no problems.' When it decides to grace me with booting up, my computer is really fast these days – thanks to your fixes! I'm gravitating toward thinking this is really a hardware-only issue now, which brings me to another question: New computer. As much RAM as it can hold (4GB), and the fasted CPU I can afford (2.4 GHz). Should I opt for something other that Vista Home Pro, or are the primary issues with that latest computer nemesis from MS really just related to lack of system resources? Your recommendations, as always, are most highly valued…
My personal choice would be Windows XP2 pro.

Make sure you do this:

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Here's my usual all clean post

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

    %SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

    Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
    Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      • Click once on the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Note: I no longer suggest Zone Alarm

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Using IE-SPYAD to help block unwanted sites and activities

  • Winpatrol

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein
Well, Mr. Forum… After some tense days, during which "winging my computer across the back fence" would've been immensely satisfying on more than one level, I was at last able to get my computer to boot up again. With sheer brute strength, awkwardness, and something akin to an insane perseverance, I managed to survive each of the steps you recommended in your "clean post." All appears to be well for now (after the computer decides to grace me with a successful boot up sequence). You've been an extraordinary weapon in the battle to keep the bad people from getting their tendrils into my hard drive (and my bank account), and if it were up to me, I'd nominate you for some kind of humanitarian award. But if I could please impose on your vast intellect just once again, those narrow-minded Dell people are forcing me into a Vista Home Premium OS as I forge ahead with the staggering purchase of a new computer. (Yes, after battles won and lost with this old horse, it's sadly going to be "put out to pasture" with what will likely be a nearly constant connection to Webkinz World and in immanent risk of getting peanut butter & jelly stuck in its keyboard.) If I follow your "clean post" directions (except for the ComboFix uninstall), and update that vast laundry list of those protective programs you've mentioned on a frequent and prompted schedule, will that be the very best strategy for keeping me out of your forum as an emergency case again? Not that I I want to stay out of your forum and not avail myself of the vast wealth of collective knowledge bandied about there, but I'd rather be an interested/casual observer than a malware-victim/active participant. I want my shiny, new, flamingo pink computer to be as protected as possible from ugly malware, despicable viruses, contemptible spyware, etc. Can you, once again, lead me down the right path so that I begin my relationship with this new computer with the brightest future possible and slimmest chance of infection and hard drive corruption? It's supposed to ship to me in late March… (I'm sure there is a team of dedicated Malaysians working on the system build even as I type this…!) (I'm thinking that McAfee and/or Norton are not going to be your recommendations, but that's just a spirited guess…) Thanks so much for everything… "Your sage advice is our salvation." Very kind regards, "Tinkerbell."
