Can anyone help? I am suffering from loss of speed especially using Internet Explorer. I have bought and run several spyware/malware removal programs (STOPzilla, Adaware, SpywareBot and Spyware Doctor) and though they all find different things and 'fix' them, they usually reappear once I have rebooted. This is very frustrating and I wonder if anyone can help before I throw my computer (or myself!) off a tall building! I am usng a pop up blocker which is very effective (from PanicWare) but though the pop ups are blocked they are still lurking around in my system. If I turn of the pop up stopper they will reappear. Listed below is my HijackThis log file. I am using Vista 64 bit Thanks anyone in advance. Norman.

Sorry about the delay in responding :(

If you still need help, Scan again with HijackThis, and copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi There,

Thank you so much for your response. I was getting worried that I'd hear from nobody. As requested, I have listed the HJT log below. The problems I have are as listed in my original post. My system is quite a bit slower than when I bought it in July (Running Vista Home premium) and I'm suffering pop ups that my spyware software won't get rid off. Alos have a pop ups from the odd porn site too. I have installed a pop up blocker from Panicware that mainly stops most pop ups but that's treating the symptons and not the cause of my problem, I assume. Look forward to hear from you.

Best Regards,
Norman

I suggest you do this:

1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove if listed:
SpywareBot

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Next:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Next:

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, please delete it from your desktop and download this new version . It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
——————————————————————–
  • Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • WARNING: IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts
  • Please do not re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
——————————————————————–

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.
Hi Again

Thank you for your help so far. I have carried out your instructions as instructed. After I ran ComboFix and it produced its log my computer started to shut down but once it got to the blank desktop, it froze – I’m not sure whether it had started to shut down or was in the process of rebooting (I think the former option) – so I had to switch off the power and then reboot. I waited 20 minutes before doing this just to ensure processes were not taking place. I enclose the ComboFix and Hijack logs. I hope my switching off the computer by the power switch hasn’t affected any settings or logs. Whilst running HijackThis the first time (the enclosed is one I ran right afterwards) I had a message from it about a registry error.

At the time of writing my wireless network has stopped working and I am wondering if this is a consequence of any of my previous actions so if you receive this I am using someone else’s network.

I look forward to hear from you further.

Regards,
Norman

Drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

Then post the results log and a new HijackThis log.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi

OK, have tried to repair my wireless network but to no avail. I click on the 'diagnose and repair' option (can't find that in the Control Panel but am using the icon in the taskbar) but I can still only get Local only. Have now run another Combofix and HijackThis and attach logs. Also have attached a screenshot of the error message I got when I ran HijackThis. My computer has been rebooted a few times since the log was made hope this doesn't matter.

Have you reset your router / modem by removing th epower from it?

Try this again as it didn't delete anything.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\spywarebot.sys
C:\Users\Norman R\AppData\Roaming\SpywareBot
C:\Windows\Tasks\SpywareBot Scheduled Scan.job
C:\Program Files\SpywareBot\SpywareBot.ex

Folder::
C:\Program Files\SpywareBot

Drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

Then post the results log and a new HijackThis log.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Enter your Control Panel and double-click on Network Connections

Then right click on your Default Connection
Usually Local Area Connection for Cable and DSL
Left click on Properties
Double-Click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item
Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS Servers Automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks

If that didn't work try the next.

Try freshening up your IP and clearing your DNS

Start - Run - (type)cmd
this will bring up a DOS Box display with a blinking cursor

At the blinking cursor type the following commands in sequence, waiting for the procedures to complete before entering the next command:

ipconfig /release - enter <– notice the required space before the "/"
ipconfig /renew - enter <– notice the required space before the "/"
ipconfig /flushDNS - enter <– notice the required space before the "/"

(Each of the above ipconfig steps may take from a few seconds to a minute or so to complete.
Wait for the blinking cursor to return before moving on to typing the next command.)

Then type in Exit tap enter.

Hi, At the time of writing, my wireless network appears to have come back to life before I attempted to carry out your last instructions (and therefore not tampered with). In addition to this, I have no signs of malware and pop ups seem to have disappeared so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that all is now well with my computer afer implementation of your previous instructions. Should I keep the ComboFix and ATF Cleaner to run from time to time? Should I reinstall SpywareBot or leave it alone? I would like to thank you for your help, especially your prompt response to my call of distress! I would also like to say I have no hesitation in making a donation to this excellent website. Regards, Norman
Good job

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

    Should I reinstall SpywareBot

No. SpywareBot is a rogue program. Do not re-install it.

Here's my usual all clean post

    Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

    %SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

    Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
    Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      • Click once on the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Note: I no longer suggest Zone Alarm

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Using IE-SPYAD to help block unwanted sites and activities

  • Winpatrol

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein
Oh well, there's always something. The attached jpg shows the error message I get when I try to run the command to make a restore point. I have cut and pasted your command so assume it must be correct.. By the way, is there a particular Firewall you recommend? Assume the windows firewall isn't good enough? Also, I use AVG anti virus, would you say it's good enough? Norman

My mistake on the system restore, you're running Vista.

I use Grisoft AVG myself.

Below is a list of two free firewalls (in no order of preference). It is important to note that you should only have one firewall installed at a time, but you can download to your Desktop and install each in turn to see which one you prefer.
