[Resolved]My computer is running really slow

Here are my computers specs. Intel Core2 cpu 6400 @ 2.13 GHz, 2.0 Gigs of ram, NVidia Geforce 7900 gs. My computer sluggishness just started happening I didn't add any new softwear or anything. It mainly affects my gaming, a butt load of ram lag is what i gather. My page file is higher then normal its at 437 MB its normally at 283. I have did scans with AVG and ad-aware, nothing turned up. I also ran ccleaner and did a disk clean up and disk defragmenter. My Lag still remains please help. Here is my logfile from hjt.

Please disable Ad-Watch, as it may hinder the removal of some HijackThis entries. You can re-enable it after your computer is clean.

To disable Ad-Watch in Ad-Aware 2007:

1. Left-click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray to open the program
2. Click the Settings button on the left side of the window.
- Click the button to the left of "Load Ad-Watch on Start up" to change the green check mark to a red x.
3. Click the Status button on the left side of the window.
- Under Protection Status, uncheck all the items to be sure they are a red X (instead of a green checkmark)
4. Close or minimize the Ad-Watch window (either will minimize it to the System Tray.

Open up HijackThis, do a System Scan and select the following entries(if present)

Since you are reporting that your computer is running very slow, stopping some or all of these entries from running at startup may help speed it up. I have included links about each entry for further information to help you decide if you want to fix any of the entries.

Then close all other windows (you can keep the current browser window open if you like) and press Fix checked and close the program.

Now please enable Ad-Watch in Ad-Aware 2007:

1. Left-click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray to open the program
2. Click the Settings button on the left side of the window.
- Click the button to the left of "Load Ad-Watch on Start up" to change the red x to a green check mark.
3. Click the Status button on the left side of the window.
- Under Protection Status, check all the items to be sure they are a green check mark (instead of a red x)
4. Close or minimize the Ad-Watch window (either will minimize it to the System Tray.

Go to Start then Search, click All files and folder. In Look in choose My Computer, then in All or part of the file name place in these file names to find out where the file is on your computer. Once the locaton of one has been found left click on it in the Search results windows and choose delete.

Now please reboot.

Please use the Internet Explorer browser (or FireFox with IETab), and do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you have used this particular scanner before, you MAY HAVE TO UNINSTALL the program through Add/Remove Programs before downloading the new ActiveX component

Click Yes, when prompted to install its ActiveX component.
(Note.. for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the "Accept" button of the license, click on the "Zoom" tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.)
The program launches and downloads the latest definition files.
  • Once the files are downloaded click on Next
  • Click on Scan Settings and configure as follows:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK and, under select a target to scan, select My Computer
When the scan is done, in the Scan is completed window (below), any infection is displayed.
There is no option to clean/disinfect, however, we need to analyze the information on the report.
To obtain the report:
Click on: Save Report As (above - red blinking arrow)
Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar
In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select: Text file [*.txt]
Then, click: Save
Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Reportin your reply.

Hello thanks for all the help. I made it up to the Kaspersky Online Scanner part, but the thing is when I click on your link I get a 404 error I used Firefox and internet explorer. So when I receive a working link I will post the Kaspersky Online Scan. My Page file has dropped to 355 now though thanks. I will be waiting for a working link. Deveous

Well your computer components don't seem to be the reason for the slowness and you seem to be malware free. How much disk space do you have? Is there a lag besides when you play games or a game?

I have a 186 gig hard drive and I have 68 gigs of free space. The lag happens when I play games such as counter strike source, Battlefield 2, mainly all of my fps games. The next thing I am going to do is take my computer apart and clean everything. If this doesn't do anything I will then move on to reformatting and starting over I will let you know how these processes go thanks for all the help. Warren

I figured out what was making my computer slow. My coolant pump went out for my cpu block. My cpu was getting to hot so I had to get a new pump everything works fine now thanks for all your help! Warren

Glad to hear you've sorted out the problem. :thumbup:

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the Window that opens, select Windows, your Language, check the "agree" box and click Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.

Now here's some advice to help prevent infections.

1)Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

One important thing to note, if you decide to install more than one antispyware program(and at least 2 are advisable these days) please make sure only 1 has resident protection enabled to avoid conflicts, however the latter 2 shouldn't conflict with similar programs or each other.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.
