Hello all. I awoke this morning to find two odd Windows Update/Help & Support icons on my desktop. I didn't remember downloading it so I followed the properties and found the link to 'Storage Protector'. I did a quick google search and found out that it was a virus program. I wasn't entirely positive of a safe way to remove this program so I decided to ask you guys. Thanks for any and all help, I really appreciate. Well my computer is starting to lag again so I'll hurry up and give you guys my HJT log.

Hi Jenkins and welcome to the forums.

My name is Dave. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can sometimes take a while to research so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE
  • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
  • Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log
  • Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..
Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Well I downloaded ComboFix and ran it. After the program started doing the "deleting files/folders:" part and deleting a very large amount of .tmp files, it closed up and my desktop was gone except for the background picture. I left it going for a while but then after still nothing changed I did a hard reset and re-ran it. The same thing happened so I'm not sure what's happening and why I can't get ComboFix to run properly. If there's anything else I can try I'm all ears.
Did a search through the computer with the keywords 'ComboFix' to make sure I didn't miss anything and I found two text files which would make sense since I ran it twice. But the thing is it's not a full log it just says this:
ComboFix 08-01-23.1C - JC & Joanie Ryan 2008-01-27 19:09:01.2 - NTFSx86
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition 5.1.2600.2.1252.1.1033.18.111 [GMT -5:00]
Running from: C:\Documents and Settings\[removed]\Desktop\ComboFix.exe
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
/wow section not completed
And that's the end of the file. I guess it terminated prematurely like you said near the end of your last post. Not sure if that helps at all but I figured it could be useful information.
Let's try this…. Making sure you have placed ComboFix.exe on your desktop, go to Start -> Run…, and copy/paste the following. Then click OK or hit your enter key. "%userprofile%\desktop\ComboFix.exe" /KillAll This will start ComboFix. Hopefully it will finish. If not we'll go from there.
Well I just ran it using your run command. It looked like it was going faster than it had the other two times but at the end it closed and blanked out my desktop. I decided to try and see if I could get anything to run so I brought up the task manager. There wasn't anything listed in the applications or the processes, I'm assuming that's what the "/killall" tag did in the run command. I tried to set up a new program to run using the 'new task' button in the manager but it told me I didn't have the system resources to even run notepad. It was strange because it was showing that I wasn't running anything and none of my processor was being used.
Let's try a run with SDFix first, then Combofix again. Please remove your current version of combofix and download a fresh one as it's updated constantly by the developer.
Please download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.
You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.
Double click on SDFix.exe. It should automatically extract a folder called SDFix to your system drive (usually C:\). Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the SDFix folder and double click on RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y and press Enter to begin the script.
  • It will start cleaning your PC and then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any key to restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer than normal to restart as the fixtool will be removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished.
  • Press any key to end the script and to load your desktop icons.
  • A text file should automatically open, so please copy the contents and post them here. We also need you to post a new HijackThis log
Then run your new version of Combofix with the killall switch, post that log if you can get it…
I restarted my computer in safe mode a couple times trying to run SDFix, but a similar problem to that of which I faced earlier with ComboFix occured. I ran SDFix and the prompt came up, I answered yes, etc. etc. Then while it started the scanning the prompt just disappeared. I left it up for a while just to make sure and still nothing.
After it happened twice I brought up the task manager before running it, it showed up in the applications but then when the prompt disappeared it showed up as the program having just stopped running.
I then decided to try and run ComboFix, which surprisingly worked this time. This is the log I got when I ran it in safe mode:
ComboFix 08-01-28.2 - JC & Joanie Ryan 2008-01-28 18:22:25.5 - NTFSx86 MINIMAL
Well it didn't want to go did it, but hopefully we can get it to run one more time with a script.
1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.
2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:
File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\kmqaflax.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\yierylxa.dll
C:\PIPEN.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\WINDOWS\mmv.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\cbtwjge.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\cbxyaba.dll
Folder::
Driver::
Registry::
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"mmv"=-
"Microsoft Live"=-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"mmv"=-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices]
"Microsoft Live"=-
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\cbxyaba]
3. Save the above as CFScript.txt
4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.
[external image: Posted Image]
5. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply:
Combofix.txt
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Run HijackThis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O2 - BHO: Miniclip - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-89B3-BE29F5D3E32D} - C:\PROGRA~1\MINICL~1\MINICL~1.DLL (file missing)

Then close all windows except this one and press Fix checked.

Reboot and post a new HJT log. Please let me know how it's running at this point.
Well I moved the text file onto ComboFix like you said, ran it, and then two prompts showed up for a few seconds, then popped down. I didn't see a log called "Combofix.txt" on my desktop so I did a search and this was the only log with that name, hopefully it's the right one. Here it is:

It's running pretty well, it hasn't frozen up so I haven't had to do any hard resets. I still have the Help/Support icons from Storage Protector. I actually think I'll do a test, I just tossed the icons into the recyling bin to see if the programs and such were gone but the icons were still left over, and after I make this post I'll restart it to see if they show back up.

Well I just finished the restart and the icons are still gone, which seems like a good sign. It seems like it's running a whole lot better than before. One strange thing though was when it came back on, it said that it couldn't find "mmv.exe.vir" I googled it and it didn't come up with anything, I took off the .vir tag and it came up as a malware removal process. Not sure if that's entirely true or not, but I was curious that if it's fine for me to take it out of my list of start up programs.

Thanks for the information!
Well no it didn't run correctly. Not sure why CF is having so much trouble here. Let's go at the rest of this another way.

Run HijackThis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mmv] C:\WINDOWS\WINDOWS\mmv.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [mmv] C:\WINDOWS\WINDOWS\mmv.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Live] cbtwjge.exe
O4 - Global Startup: mmv.exe.lnk = C:\QooBox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\WINDOWS\mmv.exe.vir

Then close all windows except this one and press Fix checked.

Please download the OTMoveIt by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\WINDOWS\mmv.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\cbtwjge.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\kmqaflax.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\yierylxa.dll
    C:\PIPEN.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\cbxyaba.dll
  • Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything on the Results window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it on your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt
*If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately, you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine, choose Yes.
**If a reboot was necessary or you needed to Exit before posting the log, you will find a copy of the log at the root of the drive where OTMoveIt is installed, usually at :
C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\********_******.log
(where "********_******" is the "date_time")

Click "Exit" to close OTMoveIt.

Reboot and post a new HJT log.
I tried to download OTMoveIt but it's 404'd, I googled it and tried to follow some other links to download it but they all led to the same 404'd URL.
OK sorry about that. Not sure what has happened with the tool. I have not used it in a while because CF does the trick typically. Let's try killbox.

1) Please download the Killbox.
Save it to the desktop and run it.

2) Select Delete on Reboot, and then click the All Files button. That button should now flash on and off with a green color.

3) Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy)::

C:\WINDOWS\WINDOWS\mmv.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\cbtwjge.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\kmqaflax.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\yierylxa.dll
C:\PIPEN.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\system32\cbxyaba.dll

4) Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.

5) Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.
After rebooting, open up Killbox again. Click File -> Logs -> Actions History Log
Post this log in your next reply.
